TV coverage shifts to ESPN starting this season. Gulp, hopefully it's not so "woke" as to be unwatchable, very hard to do with the great sport of hockey but ESPN is capable of anything.

Tampa is hoisting the championship banner at home right now for the second straight year to launch the new season. Their opponent is the Penguins, the last team to repeat but who begin this season with both Crosby and Malkin out due to off-season surgeries.

The expansion Seattle Kraken play their first game later tonight against Vegas. Vegas was far and away the best expansion team ever due to being able to draft better players than previous expansion teams, will the Kraken match their first-year success?

Great to read when these longtime Greats set new records. I am a bit bummed that Hockey is moving to espn. On my Roku tv I could see some games and highlights without cable or satellite but now I'll be back to the clip rotation they have on it. Better than nothing. Hockey may be my game of choice now that things are moving in the direction they are. Thanks for posting that WL.

If Ovechkin overtakes Gretzky for the career goals record, that would be a spectacular achievement given that Gretzky played during the highest scoring era in NHL history and Ovy has played in an era when few players even top 100 points some seasons. Gretzky of course was a much better all-around player, a peerless genius at seeing the ice and setting up plays, but Ovechkin is an all-time great in his own right.

Watching the Penguins play the Kraken in Seattle, and the Pittsburgh network televising the game is now superimposing advertising on the glass above the boards. The players are also now sporting corporate logos on their helmets, another new "advance" this season. The boards are always plastered with ads, and the ice surface seems to get a little more cluttered with advertising each season. Corporate hegemony rules, or should I say more accurately "woke" corporate hegemony, which makes all the advertising that much more annoying.

Freethinker, I've been following the NHL close for a while (1990's) and I've never seen such an amazing assist and goal. In recent years Conner McDavid and Matthew Barzal have had eye-popping end-to-end goals, but the Milano to Zegras goal was amazing. Hard to figure who made the better play? I'm thinking Milano, who displayed insane hand/eye coordination. He had a split second to hit it squarely and did. Also had to keep his stick below the top goal bar.

What's even more incredible than the goal itself, is it was pulled off by a pair born and raised in the greater New York City area? And both developed into first round picks, growing up in N.Y.C. metro?.....Milano (Italian) is five years older than Zegra (Greek). But if you look at them in the first video (one minute mark), it's hard to tell them apart -- look like twin brothers?

P.S.: The 2015 NFL Draft was horrific for whites in round 1. The 2014 NHL Draft was real bad for American born players. Milano (Long Island) and Tony DeAngelo (New Jersey) were the only two U.S. born first rounders. Glad to see DeAngelo back from his ridiculous league wide blackballing in 2021 and playing at a near All-Star level. Supposedly he fought a (Russian) teammate last winter. But we all know the real deal: Tony is considered the NHL's resident racist and Homophobe. Fair or not, that's the label he's been given by our Kosher "friends", who wanted him banned for life.....Our "friends" heads must've exploded when DeAngelo Sr. admitted on video he uses Racial Slurs every day.

James is legendary female player who's known for being discriminated against trying to play hockey as woman and a Black/Mulatto but hiring her as GM would be a reach without front office experience.

The NHL while spouting PC dogma really doesn't believe in it beyond chanting the dogma as when the non White unofficial union demanded X spots for non Whites in management the NHL didn't budge on forced quotas.

Zdeno Chara broke Chris Chelios' record for most games played by a defenseman when he suited up for his 1,652nd game the other night. He's in his 24th NHL season (it would be 25 if the league hadn't squandered the entire '04-05 season), amazing.

Chara is an athletic freak, the Randy Johnson of hockey at 6'9" and still going strong at the age of 44 (he turns 45 next month). Chara's a future cinch Hall of Famer who is very tough to play against on the ice and is a gentleman and great role model off it.

I've always been a hardcore hockey fan, NHL, AHl, college, Canadian juniors but, this year I have checked out. Haven't watched more than 2 full games. My Red Wings are horrible which is a factor but, the NHL and hockey media going full on woke is the major factor.

The Canadian broadcaster, sportNet just did a piece on how the "murder" of Trayvon Martin affected blacks and black hockey players. It's was full of inaccuracies and propaganda but,more so why is this even part of a hockey broadcast other than to signal that hockey is too White and it needs to become more vibrant..

This has actually been a pretty enjoyable NHL season for me. Here in South Florida, our Panthers have the #1 scoring offense in the league. It feels weird saying that after decades of lousy hockey. The crowds seem to have come back too although they still have a ways to go in order to start filling up that barn on a regular basis. At least we can stop hearing the "move the Panthers to Quebec" propaganda... for now anyway. During the dark years of 2000-2020 I would get dirt cheap tickets sometimes you could count the number of people in the stands. This was mainly due to the lousy location of the arena and 20 years of a horsesh*t on ice product. I would wear Panthers gear at work and people wouldn't even know what it was. That's how terrible the overall product and marketing of the team was down here. I'm glad owner Vinnie Viola seems to have figured it out (after a tumultuous first couple of years) It also helps when you hit on top 3 draft picks. Whiffing on top 3 picks (such as Erik Gudbranson, Jay Bouwmeester, and Nathan Horton) is certain death in the NHL. When you go from those guys to the more recent top 3 picks (Huberdeau, Barkov, and Ekblad) you can see why they've gotten better. All they needed was the complimentary pieces around him and new GM Bill Zito has delivered.

I watched the Panthers beat the Penguins in Pittsburgh 4-3 the other night and the game wasn't as close as the score indicates. Florida is young, hungry, talented, very fast, and disciplined, a helluva combination. The Eastern Conference playoff teams are already all but decided as there's a big gap between the eight with the most points and the other teams, the first time I can recall it dividing into the haves and have nots like that so early in the season. The Stanley Cup playoffs are always unpredictable not to mention great entertainment and the battle for the Eastern Conference championship should make for outstanding playoff hockey as any of the eight contenders could be the team that goes on to the finals. Florida and Carolina are probably the favorites at this point but other teams like Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh and of course Tampa have a lot more playoff experience.

Red Wings defenseman Marc Staal played in his 1,000th game last night, joining brothers Eric and Jordan in that department, the first time three brothers have each reached 1,000 NHL games, quite a feat. Brother Jared Staal also played in the NHL but didn't have the longevity of the other three.

Auston Matthews scored two goals tonight and now has 60 on the season. It's the 40th time in NHL history someone has scored at least 60 goals, but only the third time this century -- Ovechkin scored 65 in '07-'08 and Stamkos potted 60 in '11-'12.

Connor McDavid has a career high 122 points and is about to win his fourth Art Ross Trophy as the league's highest point scorer.

I've been watching a lot of Panthers hockey over the years and I like the makeup of their team but, feel that goaltending will be their shortcoming. I just dont feel Bobs is consistent enough to inspire confidence over the full cup run.

I'm happy my Rangers got by the penguins as there was a lot of controversial officiating in just about every game but I just don't see them getting by Carolina. Artemi Panarin gets 12 million a year and all he does is skate down the left side and try to make some perfect pass. He can't forecheck he cant play in front of the net and he only seems to score on open net one timers. If the Rangers can dump this guy next year and get rid of second line center , Ryan Strome they will get the guys they need and should be the cup favorites next year.
