Matthew Boling opened up his college freshman season indoors today. He finshed 2nd in the long jump and also 2nd in the 60 meters. He ran a 6'68 which is the
3rd fastest 60 meter time by a sprinter in Georgia History! Wow was a debut! :)

This is probably a fantastic mark by Boling (6.68 for the 60m). I know some people probably would have wished for better, and after seeing that he got beat by another freshman might be a little concerned. I doubt there is need for concern. Remember he is a freshman and this was his first college meet ever. He has never run indoors and he still doesnt have a full year under his belt as a short sprinter. He also has an all new coaching staff from when he was in high school. I'm sure they are coveting him and going slow. Right now I'm sure they are figuring out what he responds well to and what he doesnt, and that includes psychologically and emotionally as well as physically. Remember he is only 19. If you're the coaching staff the last thing you would want is for him to go out in the first meet and run a 6.5 flat. The likelihood that he then would consider that his floor, and right at the time when the most intense part of the training year is beginning (speed endurance), could easily lead to him chasing times which could quickly turn to ruin with injuries and burnout.

I would imagine they didnt cut his training at all in the buildup for this meet. They would not have wanted him fresh. This meet was just another workout. Keep in mind that he successfully completed 6 long jumps just prior to his 60m runs. That certainly would have taken some pop out of his legs. Its early and I would imagine that 6.68 was a really good time in terms of what the coaching staff was hoping for. Its early but I'm gonna make a prediction now: Before the end of the indoor season, and if he stays healthy, Boling will break 6.5 this indoor season.

I'm not sure about Boling breaking into the 6.40's range yet if ever. He is a long strider and like many others may take longer to get up to speed. He will run 6.5* times all day in another year or two
but 6'40's is very rare for any sprinter. I would love to see it but that is more about explosive power our of the blocks. Think of a guy built like John Teeters. If he adds alot of muscle it's possible but
he won't have to run that fast of a 60 meters time to go sub 10. He just needs to get consistantly in the low to mid 6.5 range which is possible this year or next.

I'm very happy with his time due to the pressure and jumping 6 long jumps not long before his 60 meters race. It's actually a great time as his legs had to be hurting. I wish they would have had him
run the 60 and the 200 instead of the long jump. I think that even though he is one hell of a long jumper, that is not where the money or fame is? It's in the 100 & 200 meters. This is where they should
keep him at. I'm super pumped to see what kinds of times he can run both indoors and outdoors. Just give up the long jump as that can lead to injuries too easy. Stick with the sprints Matthew. His coach
should know better. He was born to run! :)

Boling has said previously in more than 1 interview he really loves the LJ so it was probably him wanting to compete in the LJ. I have always felt as one gets into their late teens early twenties as a sprinter they should give up the long jump as it is nasty on the hamstrings, ankles and knees not to mention the back. So I agree with White Lightening in this regard. As a masters aged sprinter myself I gave up all jumps including the hj to reduce injury chances...

So far 35 athletes have run under 6.50 sec for an indoor 60m race. The 35th fastest 100m sprint time is 9.90 seconds. Clearly there isnt an exact translation between the 60m and the 100m. As you noted some 100m guys are longer striders and not as explosive out of the blocks - they're not likely to be as fast in the 60m. Likewise some 100m sprinters are strong explosive types that are more designed for the 60m. The top 100m sprinters regardless of build type and stride length excel at both distances.

I fully expect Boling to run into the 9.7s in his career if he stays at it and stays healthy. My hope is that he gets into the 9.6s or faster.

8 men have broken 9.80 seconds in 100m (the time I expect Boling to best). All of them have run under 6.50 seconds in the 60m with exceptions to Yohan Blake, Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt. Coincidentally the three fastest guys of all time who have all run under 9.70 seconds for a 100m! These guys never ran under 6.50 for a 60 because they had already given up running the 60m by the time they started running under 10 seconds or they never ran an indoor 60m race period to begin with. Obviously all three of these guys can run under 6.50 seconds. In fact I think Bolt was timed unofficially at 60m in 6.31 seconds in his 9.58 100m record race.

In Boling's wind aided 9.98 100m race he was free of the competition at 30m! The second and third place finishers ended up with times of 10.27 and 10.33 respectively and Boling at this point had had limited training with blocks as he was previously a 400m runner. He also stumbled in this race coming out of the blocks! The second place finisher was a slightly shorter runner than Boling. Neither of the 2nd or 3rd pace finishers were long striders. (Bested two of the top 100m sprinters in the country by the 30m mark and having stumbled and with very limited block work!!!!)

The point of all those stats I just listed is to show that if Boling is destined to be one of the all-time 100m greats then there is no question about it: He will break 6.50 in a 60m provided he continues to run it. Period. He may not be a Christian Coleman type but he should be a 6.4x sprinter.

Had the wind been near the legal limit and at a faster venue, like Hayward Field, he theoretically could have been 10 flat last summer. He works his blocks, gets stronger, trains hard and gets into some fast races this season, then when he arrives in Eugene come late June he again should run under 9.90 seconds if the races are fast as they usually are there. Everybody says this kid is special. This is the last place where people should be pumping the breaks on his expectations and the ceilings being set for him especially at just age 19.

In regards to the long jump you all might be right that he should give up the event. Most sprinters cant handle it. Carl Lewis did and he ran and jumped with the best of them through age 36! It might be a little to early to know but Boling might just be in that same rare air.

I don't know who this guy is, but he sure is in great shape. I wish Lemaitre would have trained half as hard.

100m (1.7) 1 Jack Hale 10.27

Nice to see Jack Hale start the season off with a win. He had a rough year last year but I expect him to be back to form this year. It would be great
to see Hale set a new few personal bests in an Olympic Year!

interestingly Michele Lee Ayhe suspended for 2 years for failure of wherebouts, Kenya's Alfred Kipketer suspended for same thing yet Christian Coleman wasn't suspended for the very same infractions....lol what a joke!

Coleman has the potential to be the face of track and field, The Trinidadian and Kenyan are journeyman athletes to the average casual fan.

doesnt matter, he should be suspended for his actions....
I agree but I am just explaining why he was allowed to skate.

If rules aren't there to be followed then why have them.

This will be the new form of corruption under Sebastian Coe as he can't take money like Diack did.

I'm suprised to not hear more from Mastermulti. He is our main reporter connection from Australia. I miss your posts bro. Hope to hear from you soon.

On Feb. 1st, 2020 we have the first major outdoor meet in Australia. All the big guns in sprinting will be there. I'm still excited about the strong youth movement and
especially in the sprints. I hope this trend continues. It sucks to lose Trae Brown to Rugby but life on the track goes on.

Jack Hale opened up with his fastest 100 meters to start a season ever a week ago with a wind legal 10.27! He seems to be ready to open some eyes down under this year.

I am very excited to see wth Rohan Browning can do. This kid just has that aura about him. I see him going sub 10 either this year or next. He is just a stud. I hope they
also have him run some more 200 meters as the speed endurance will help any sprinter.

hi WL.
Nothing has happened here apart from Hale's run (and I only knew about that from this site). Nothing from Browning, nothing happening much with these bushfires and smokey air over much of the east coast.

For all of my fellow track lovers here on this board. They show all the meets in Australia on this channel. Been watching 2 days of action so far. You can rewind the live stream
and watch whatever events you like. They even have separate streams for the track and also the field events. It's awesome and the commentators are great too! :)

By the way. Without giving too much away Jack Hale ran a 10.25 wind legal in the first round and just blasted a very incredible 10.14 0.5 wind in the semi finals. Way to go Jack Hale! He is only 21!

I hate to post this but I know he is not as good a 60 meters runner as he will be in the future. Losing will drive Matthew Boling insane. He is such a competetor. This will help ignite the fire!
