Mississippi State has started 1, 2, 2, 3, 5, 5, 2, 2 and 2, 2, 3, 1 and 1 white(s) since 2005. In 2020 they are project to start 3.
Joe Moorhead was fired and in comes Mike Leach to the SEC. The eccentric Mike Leach is a personality I personally find entertaining. I do not think he is a caste coach - he just goes with whatever is available in terms of recruiting. I do not think he will really improve upon the systemic caste structure that is obviously prevalent at Mississippi St as well as any other SEC institutions.
His offense will cause a few waves in the SEC season and a potential upset or two. It is wide open and relentless when it runs on all cylinders. Leach is a QB guru and it seems like that is really the only point of interest this season.
This big get for Leach is the transfer of former Stanford starting QB K.J. Costello. Costello was looked at favorably before experiencing some injuries in 2019 while at Stanford. He could be a wild card in the SEC this year and may be a draft day riser. He is projected to start.
Don't forget uber athletic QB Garret Shrader. I cannot recall Leach ever utilizing a QB as more than a pocket passer who runs his high octane offense. Shrader is a dynamic athlete who is hopefully utilized in a productive way. He was also assaulted by a black teammate who was rewarded by being draft by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2nd round.
Leach is also supposedly really high on true freshman Will Rogers whom he recruited while he was at Wazzu. He may be a QB to keep an eye on for the future.
Players to look out for are OL Nick Pendley, WR Brad Cumbest (listed at 6-4, 245lbs!), DE Jack Harris, LB Jett Johnson and S Landon Guidry.
Miss St actually has several other white WRs on the team and knowing Leach's past he is not above playing them if they understand the offense and can execute. I'll just mention the three JUCO transfers on the roster - WRs Brodie King, Carson Banks and Bo Brooks. Their are also a few freshman/RS frosh WRs that would be worth keep tabs on. Could be an interesting season for Miss St.
OFFENSE
QB - K.J. Costello
Slot - Austin Williams
C - Cole Smith
