Apparently John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova protested a tennis arena being named after Margaret Court - because she is a normal person and doesn't believe tranny's should be reading to kindergateners. Court is the greatest women's player of all time with 24 grand slam singles titles. She is now 77 and is a preacher. She has said that there are 2 sexes and that LGBT teaching to small children in school is the Devil's work. Some real controversial stuff that only 98% of normal people believe. Navratilova and McEnroe held posters to rename Margaret Court Arena to some Aboriginal tennis players name and then tried to take the microphone and speak right in the arena. I have never quite figured out the Q as in queer with the LGBTQ label. Why don't they just settle for the Q to encompass everyone so inclined? Ha.

Seriously I want to look at this from a broader perspective. In the USA today and in some other parts of the world acceptance of LGBTQ persons has never ever been higher. Here in the US gay/lesbian couples can now marry. Just like cell phones no one saw that coming back when in the not too distant past. The Supreme Court did allow for a baker to object on religious/moral reasons to get involved in a gay wedding but generally the idea the Supreme Court was driving at was to try and find a middle and civil ground among people who have different view points on this issue. By the way I suspect a more right wing leaning Supreme Court will not overturn the "gay marriage" ruling.

So with all the "progress" that has been made for lesbians ( well bull dyke) for people like Navratilova she still is a vigilante vengeful bitch. Instead of looking a gift horse in the mouth this wench continues to behave in an uncivil aggressively menacing way. Why? I'll tell you why. Navratilova has never gotten over the anger that she was born without a penis and she has been taken that out on the public her entire adult life.

Character? She is at the bottom of the list. She piled on to the poor ESPN tennis reporter Doug Adler who got slammed for falsely being accused of using a racist slur against Venus Williams. He was duly acquitted by a court and ESPN rightfully lost the law suit case. Also want to mention creep NY Times tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg who started this BS hit job against Adler still has a job with the NY Times. I haven't gotten around to go after Rothenberg and have him fired. Believe me I will try at some point. On my bucket list.

Navratilova should just be thankful she wasn't around during the Salem Witch Trials. She would have been the first one burnt at the stake. But enough about someone who doesn't warrant my time.

Back to more important issues.

I really think Dominic Thiem has a shot at beating Djokovic. From a physical standpoint Thiem, who is an excellent athlete with the type of speed and power needed for top tier players, can stand toe to toe with Djokovic who at this point is one of the best athletes in the world. Thiem finally slayed a big three dragon in Nadal and he beat the ferociously rugged Nadal at his own game with red blooded rugged tennis. Smack down tennis. And Thiem is a top notch clay court player ( a finalist at the French Open) so the slower speeds on the Australian courts should play into his strengths.

The question though is whether Thiem has the mental capacity and strength to win here? He has the core strength now that he is 26 but as always with tennis players can he stay tough throughout and not wilt when adversity arrives? I give him a shot.

The women's final starts at 3:30 am EST. Ugh. That's a time for super night owls or those getting up for their paper routes lol (I used to get up at 5:00 for mine). I'll be rooting for Kenin but Muguruza has looked like the best player in the tournament despite being unseeded, lots of power combined with precision and surprising defensive prowess. Halep played a strong match against her in the semis but still lost in two straight close sets. But anything can happen, maybe Sofia can pull it off.

Evert opened the match saying these are the lowest rated players ever to play in a Aussie Open which gives one an idea of how the women's field lacks consistent top tier players.

Kenin is one intense young lady. She even spikes the ball after winning key games and throughout this tournament she has not flinched. Her mental focus has been the most impressive thing as she keeps coming and doesn't have big dip periods in her game. As a result she has chopped down her bigger opponents like Coco and now Muguruza by mentally and physically decapitating her bigger and harder hitting opponents. Similar flow in both matches. Kenin loses a hard fought first set but like a boxer working the mid section she has weakened them to the point where Sofia took control of the final two sets. After all those axe shots down go the trees.

Here she has changed things up with some drop shots and her backhand looks first class. She has moved the Spaniard around enough to wear her out. And Kenin plays like a metronome making her opponents pay a penalty when their game drops a bit.

A deserving champion she beat the "kid" then in front of Barty's home crowd she stayed tough throughout and her even keel approach was too much for Barty who flinched at the key moments. Key break down moment of this finals match? Down 0-40 on her serve tied at 2-2 in the third set Kenin roars back to win the game and the rest is history. The long legged Spaniard's spirit was snatched away for good.

Well deserved victory for the 21 year old American. She has basically lived here her entire life.

Thiem is going to need that same kind of focus and mental toughness to defeat Djokovic who is practically as dominant on the Aussie hard courts as Nadal has been at the French Open . I expect a full throated long brawl.

I'm so happy to see Kenin win. She is a class act on and off the court. She is also very beautiful. This could be the american star on the female side we've been waiting for. It's been touched on so many times in other sports. Russian and European Athletes in general are alot more confident than american white athletes. It show's just home much psychological warefare is done on boys and girls growing up in the U.S. Just happy she won. Hopefully Kenin will win many more grand slams as her career is just starting out!

Watching the entire 4th and 5th sets I could say Thiem lost his nerve in the big moment? Some of that. His fatigue set in after a round of grueling matches? Some of that. But ultimately he succumbed to a master who wasn't going to give him any ground. Djokovic kept the pressure on Thiem after a lackluster 3rd set by playing mainly mistake free tennis and doing what he has been doing for years: returning serves better than anyone in the game, deep and precise ground strokes and of course his defense which forces opponents to go for too much at times.

I felt for Thiem. He came very close but the big moment where he blew an easy drop shot and lost his serve in the 4th set turned around the match psychologically. And he never fully recovered.

Djokovic is proving as deadly on this court as Nadal is on the clay at the French Open. This is his 8th Aussie which is ridiculous and he now has 17 Grand Slam titles trailing Nadal (19) and Federer (20).

It was announced that they set an attendance record here soaring over 800,000 in the two week event. This despite all the bush fire troubles. Tennis is still incredibly popular world wide but the US press treats it as side dish preferring to concentrate on the black heavy sports.

But it just goes to show the world does want to watch and cheer on top tier white athletes ( and believe me tennis players are among the greatest athletes in the world) performing at such dazzling levels.

Probably not worth a mention but I will anyway. The junior winners were white. Andorran Kasintseva for the girls and French Mayot for the boys.

Like the past several years despite the Kenin win, I don't think we have seen a sea change in tennis yet except for the fact Serena isn't winning majors anymore but that was to be expected given her age. On the men's side we are locked into an unprecedented period of the Big Three and younger players 25 and under just can't move the needle. Yes this is the greatest "trio" of all time in terms of top players playing at the same time. And the first period where younger male players are struggling to this degree.

I sense that could change by the end of the year ( which has been wrongly predicted for three years plus now) but around tennis circles there is some frustration because the sport wants to introduce new fresh faces. Given the recent flux situation on the women's side it is premature to anoint Kenin as the new face of the female tour. Only time will tell on that score but it won't be easy for her. That said anytime you win a major it catapults you into a different category.

Finally regarding the women's tour unlike a handful of younger male players ( Shapovalov, Tsitsipas, Medvedev) that I root for nowadays on a personal level I am not especially thrilled with many of the female players. While it is true I rooted for Kenin to win her last three matches apart from Halep I am not nuts over any other female player for the most part. I did like to see cute CiCi Bellis make some noise here and would love to see her progress. Most think she is too small and not powerful enough to progress. The only other top player I like a lot is athletic Svitolina but she has yet to demonstrate championship pedigree.

This is a departure from the past where I used to have a lot of "favorite" female players like Dementieva, Henin, Sharapova, Kirilenko ( both big time lookers) plus Clijsters and several others. These days a player like the athletic and sexy Giorgi just can't breakthrough with her stupid brand of see ball hit ball tennis. Makes me long for the days Martina Hingis played classic crafty tennis. At the end of the day my personal choices will contrast with others here as to favorites. And yes I prefer white players winning that goes without saying.

But I sense it is just a phase period for me that will pass and I will find some new female players to go gaga over. Time will tell. It won't be Coco though. Ha.

I woke up and watched the fourth and fifth sets, actually tuned in just as Novak turned it around in the fourth set, so I'll take partial credit for his win

I don't think Thiem choked at all; Djokovic just dug really deep and used his ability and experience to eek out a close win over a very tough opponent.

It really is remarkable how privileged we've been to watch Djokovic, Federer and Nadal dominate for so long. And Djokovic now has a very good chance to surpass Roger and Rafa and end up with the most Slam titles of all.

I remember back in '08 when Djokovic won his first Australian and first Slam championship. The media was obsessed at that event with Jo Wilfried Tsonga (and secondarily with black American James Blake), the half-black "Frenchman" who lost to Djokovic in the final. It was of course assumed that Tsonga was going to be a superstar, but it didn't turn out that way. Tsonga peaked at number five in the world rankings in 2012 and never won a Slam title. In fact, the '08 Australian may have been the only final he reached. In the meantime, Novak now has an amazing 8 Australian championships to his name!

It's great that there are no Great Black Hopes on the men's side currently, as any time there is a black who is good at a sport, he or she automatically receives the lion's share of media attention and adulation and it only takes one for the system to do what it's so good at -- tainting, degrading, and ultimately ruining everything it touches.

Big congrats to Djokovic! He bagged his 17th Majors title in a big way fighting back and winning this one in style and guts. I like Djokovic in the fact that he's good on all surfaces and may indeed pass Federer's 20 Majors as he's showing he's got a lot of years left and playing at an incredibly high level physically and mentally!

Excellent points and agree 100 percent. The Australian Open gets buried over here in the States for the most part for that very reason.

I doubt the Australian tennis folks are going to change their tournament just for Americans, as much as we too often consider ourselves the center of the universe (not referring to posters here, just the country in general, esp. the ruling class and its many tentacles). I like the Australian Open so much because much of it is shown live in the evenings here, and because it takes place in the dead of winter and I have more time to watch it. I probably watch as much of the Australian Open as the other three Slam events put together or close to it, and it's just as important as any of the other three. Like The Masters in golf it kicks off the new year of majors and sets the tone for the year to come.

The only downer is that the finals for both men and women start live at 3:30 am Eastern time. But they are repeated a few times on ESPN and the Tennis Channel.
