Since 2007, Washington State have started 8, 9, 8, 11, 13, 13, 10, 8, 9, and 7 white starters, excluding 2014 where no write-up was done. In 2018 they project to remain at 7.
With Luke Falk graduating to the NFL, the quarterback position is up for grabs. Washington State have six QBs on their roster and they’re all white, with JR Trey Tinsley in the best position to get the job, while Drew Bledsoe’s son John is also in competition.
Kyle Sweet remains as a starting receiver after 58 catches for 533 yards and two TDs last season, while also being the teams starting punter! WSU don’t use TEs which takes away a white pass catcher, but two redshirt freshman in Hayden Harvey and Jonny Neville could make impacts when given chances at WR.
Max Borghi comes into his true freshman season as the #2 running back and will hopefully make some plays – he was the top RB prospect out of Colorado and #23 overall all-purpose RB after 1,690 yards and 27 TDs as a high school SR, plus one kick and one punt return TD. To go into a reasonably big college as a RB, let alone a racially discriminated against one, and be the #2 is a very good achievement and shows how highly rated Borghi is, and together with FR QB Cammon Cooper could form the best offensive backfield pair in the PAC-12 in a couple years. Redshirt freshman Austin Regis is also in competition for snaps at running back.
On defense, Peyton Pelluer will start at LB for the fifth straight season as a grad school student after missing 10 out of 13 games as a senior through injury. RS SO Dillon Sherman will back him up at LB (23 tackles and one sack in 2017), while the only other white starter is NT Nick Begg, who starts for the first season after appearing as a back-up in every game in 2017. RS JR Preston Hendry could press for snaps at DE after two productive JUCO seasons with Orange Coast College. RS SR Dylan Axelson and RS JR Hayden Schmidt are the two defensive backs on the roster. Axelson has played five games on special teams.
