Fantastic leaderboard after three rounds, with 14 players within five shots of the lead. Brooks Koepka leads by two shots; he's trying to win his third major of the past seven played. Should be a great finale round for this year's majors, except of course if Woods wins (he's four shots back).

An immense leaderboard. I watched a ton yesterday and hope to watch most of the last round today. This is a very important last Major that will set things up for the future. The talent in golf right now is over the top. We are seeing I believe the beginning of a golden age. In fact golf sales have recently gone up so it's popularity is on the rise after a dry patch initially occurred when Tiger stopped winning back when.

Congrats to Bruce Koepka for winning his third major. At only 28 years old, we have another young star to root for in the coming years. It was an incredible final round of golf!

It was also way too close as Woods almost pulled it off. He does seem to be peaking, having played well at the British Open last month and now this. Thankfully the major season is over, and that's another year gone by without him winning one. Jack's record is completely safe, but we know even if Woods won one more major, the sports media will treat it as the biggest story in the history of golf and we'll never hear the end of it.

In a way, it is good that he came so close but failed to win. It must be extra painful for his worshippers at BSPN and elsewhere.

Woods played a very strong round, with his irons and putter making up for a lot of wayward tee shots. It can be looked at two ways: maybe "Tiger is back;" or in retrospect this will be seen as his last, best chance to win a major. He shot 64, his lowest final round ever in a major and still didn't win. I'll bet on the latter scenario as he'll be 43 when the next Masters tees off.

The media was truly perverted. As Peter Kostis and Jim Nantz pointed out, Koepka and Adam Scott played in virtual anonymity as 99% of the media breathlessly followed Woods. And speaking of 99%, 99% of the crowd was White, likely mostly Trump supporters, yet they used their deplorable white supremacy and white privilege to yell and scream for Tiger Woods all day. The media party line rarely corresponds to reality. Fortunately Nantz, as always, kept an even keel when it came to CBS's narrative of the event.

Meantime, semi-unknown Brooks Koepka has won three of the past seven majors (and didn't even play in this year's Masters due to injury). He's a combination of great physical strength and seemingly unflappable mental strength. He's also very low-key, his demeanor basically indicating that he's right where he expects to be when he wins big tournaments.

What a relief! I was very occupied today and didn't get to watch a lick of it. I share Don's thoughts that Woods plays his best final Major round ever and still lost is good for his aforementioned reasons. Also great is that Tiger worshippers are devastated.

The next Major (next season) with Woods being 43 and all the young phenoms around him reduces his chances that much more. There are several young bucks that are really excelling and establishing themselves in tough tournament victories.

...and all the media talks about is Tiger! You would think he won.

The local sports page features three stories on the PGA, two of them entirely about Woods, and the third one has a headline about Koepka winning but is also primarily concerned with The Fallen One.

I found the following byte from one of the non-bylined AP articles indicative of how interlopers like Koepka aren't appreciated for waylaying the desired narrative of Tiger triumphantly beginning to win majors again: "It will be impossible to overlook [Koepka] now, not with the Wanamaker Trophy to go with his back-to-back U.S. Open titles. Koepka won two of the three majors he played this year, and three of his previous six. Not since Woods won four in a row through the 2001 Masters has anyone won majors at such an alarming rate."

Interesting use of the word "alarming" to describe Koepka's accomplishment. When Tiger was winning majors, you can bet no writer ever referred to his wins as "alarming." "Prolific," "prodigious," "spectacular," "amazing," "awe-inspiring," etc., yes, but not alarming, which undoubtedly would have been called "racist" in its implications.

Nance pointed out that it was a shame Koepka win would be over shadowed by Woods 2nd place. But the story should have been another tournament choked away by Woods. He was one back when he shanked yet another drive into the woods.

He swung his club in anger on the tee and let loose with an expletive. No one dared point it out. After Koepka birdied the next hole if was over.

And he only got 2nd place because Scott bogied the last meaningless hole and Woods birdied it. The "shot of the tournament" according to the announcers. Despite it not meaning anything in the end.

Then, there's Trump:

Brooks Koepka just won his third Golf Major, and he did it not only with his powerful game, but with his powerful mind. He has been a man of steel on the Tour and will have many Victories, including Majors, ahead of him. Congrats to Brooks and his great team on a job well done!

You have to think a lot of the overdrive Woods talk has a lot to do with money. He is money in the bank for CBS. They will milk that for as long and as hard as possible.

As for Woods Don postulated two scenarios. No I don't think he is back to the point of winning majors but he did a great job of scrambling yesterday. He looked erratic despite his sharp short game. It was the make some noise type of golf but lacked championship pedigree. That belonged to Koepka who played with the kind of ease we expected from the other young big names. Plopping approach shots near the pin time and again. Woods on the other hand had too many hacking moments which did him in at the end.

Justin Thomas made a great push but he missed too many short putts and he never recovered from his nasty three putt effort (from a short distance) .

Koepka was not the choice candidate to take over golf this year. For one thing no one saw him coming last year when he won the US Open and even after that he was dismissed because he hasn't won much of anything up to that point.

Now he is being reevaluated of course now that he has handily won three majors.

As mentioned above the tour is stocked with tremendous young talent. I am not overly concerned about Woods at this point although I admit he makes an interesting side show but that is the key word. Despite his big showing here he is still at this point still a side show type of player and expect the main characters next season to reemerge and look for some other young players like Tommy Fleetwood to start staking a claim. I just can't envision Woods being able to keep pace.
