A time ago, tOSU could be counted on to feature a lot of homegrown white talent, and it was commonplace for the Buckeyes to have standout white WRs and defensive playmakers. However, Urban (aptly named) Meyer has largely sold out on this practice, changing the team demographically to fit his vision; a vision that typically features an abundance of black OL and all an all black QB depth chart.
This year, Ohio State is rostering two white quarterbacks for the first time in what feels like forever. Joe Burrow was expected to enter the season as the backup to veteran starter J.T. Barrett. However, a broken bone in Burrow's throwing hand has taken him out of the season indefinitely. Down towards the bottom of the depth chart is freshman new comer Tate Martell, a hotly recruited HS prospect who will almost certainly one day take over the reigns of signal caller for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes have still managed to continue the tradition of featuring talented white defensive players, even when they're often times the only player(s) on the field. 2017 is no different, and Nick Bosa and Sam Hubbard will take over the reigns. Although both are listed as 'co-starters'; neither is at risk for losing PT. Rather, tOSU features an abundance of talent on the defensive side of the ball, and players will be rotated routinely. Expect both of these guys to be lighting up the field on Sundays in a few a years.
Ohio State has had a number of very hotly recruited defensive white players who have not panned out in recent years. DT Dylan Thompson, now a RS-Junior, has battled injuries and academic issues and remains unlikely to see the field in 2017. LB Nick Conner has had three knee injuries in just as many years; his availability for this season remains unclear. RS Freshman Tuf Borland (shockingly no relation) will see the field a lot this year in a reserve function. True freshman Pete Werner hopefully will follow next.
Ohio State will repeat their record low last year with just 3 white starters. However, this is not an Ole Miss or Florida paltry 3; there remains a decent amount of white players on scholarship, and at positions that they're forbidden from playing in the ACC or SEC. Ohio State will almost certainly be in the CFB playoff, so hopefully some of these players break through.
Offense -
C - Billy Price
Defense -
DE - Nick Bosa
DE - Sam Hubbard
Back ups on the two deep include C Brady Taylor, TE Luke Farrell, LB Tuf Borland.
