Historically Notre Dame has been a very white and blue collar team, consistently one of the teams that we could pull for. Under Brian Kelly, this has completely changed and the Fighting Irish are finally starting to look more like the Fighting Zulus. The result of the recent years of Kelly's coal black recruiting classes are starting to come into fruition. Since 2005, Notre Dame has had 10, 11, 11, 11, 10, 10, 11, 11, 9, and 8 white starters. This year, a pathetic 6. It's hard to believe that just 3 years ago this team featured two starting white WRs and a back up white RB/CB.
Kelly has loaded up this roster with black QBs. Even after the departure of Everett Golson, all 3 scholarship QBs are black. For decades Notre Dame has had stud white TEs, putting them into the NFL on what felt like a yearly basis. Even that is changing as the back up TE is a sophomore Samoan, and Kelly brought in a highly hyped freshman black TE. The only remote positive on this team is that there are some young white defensive back ups. DE Andrew Trumbetti (started in last year's bowl game) will undoubtedly be a huge part of the rotation and will be a feature stud, as will LB Greer Martini.
In 2014 I predicted that we would see 7-8 white starters for ND in coming years. Kelly has proved me wrong, and it looks like 6-7 will be his formula.
Offense -
TE - Durham Smythe
RT - Mike McGlinchey
RG - Steve Elmer
C - Nick Martin
LG - Quenton Nelson
Defense -
LB - Joe Schmidt
Back ups to look for include LT Hunter Bivin, LG Alex Bars, DE Andrew Trumbetti, DE Grant Blankenship, LB Greer Martini, LB Jarrett Grace, and S Drue Tranquill. This is the blackest oline roster I have ever seen in Notre Dame history.
