Looks like the Saints will finally have a player to root for other than the great Drew Brees in tight end Sean Hill, who Sean Payton has been raving about:
Saints coach Sean Payton emphasized his "love" for third-year TE Josh Hill on Wednesday. "This Josh Hill is another player that I love. I love," Payton said. "When you look at his runs, jumps, height, weight, speed, you look at his measurables — and he didn’t go to the Combine, thank God." Payton went on to say he believed Hill would be perceived much differently around the league had he not been an undrafted free agent. Hill is the kind of player whose fantasy hype train could spiral out of control, but he's definitely a candidate for a major step forward in 2015.
Hill wasn't invited to the Combine despite having great athleticism and solid production at Idaho State.
It's nice to see Payton being so high on Hill, but it also has to be taken with many grains of salt. After starting a "snow patrol" at linebacker in his first season as head coach, he methodically stripped the Saints defense of White players. And Payton also has adamantly refused to give any White receivers a chance despite signing the likes of Mike Hass, Chase Lyman, Aaron Hosack and other gifted athletes. Jimmy Graham was traded for Max Unger, giving the team 2 Whites on the o-line for the first time in a long time and opening up a spot at TE for Hill, so we'll have to wait and see if the Saints do actually end up with less of a hard-core Caste look this year.
