I understand lamenting the lost program for nostalgia's sake. I came to my opinion after reading the first ESPN article and ensuing comments, where some "brave" "pariah" senior player stood up to chastise the school president during the official press conference. From what I gathered from the actual journalism, the school is currently subsidizing 2/3 of the team's annual $30 million operating costs, and projects to require another $30-$50 million in fixed costs for facility repairs/renovations over the next five years. Of course, the framing of this story breaks down to "old rich white rednecks in suits" versus the poor black players who are just trying to get educated and feed their families. How they reconcile the slur "redneck" with rich men in suits, I couldn't rightly say. But as usual, the bottom line boils down to "mo' money fo' dem programs."
This might not hurt or help the caste system in a big way, but as far as white racial interests go, it's a plus. UAB currently has six men's varsity sports compared to eleven for women thanks to silly Title IX requirements. Thanks to the newly-free 80+ scholarships for male athletes, UAB can now field teams for wrestling, track, cross country, and more. Such "equal opportunity" sports will undoubtedly lead to more free education for the region's young white men, at least compared with the proportion that were allowed to play football.
