"One of the Chargers' goals this offseason was to fortify their backfield, which meant finding a true fullback as well as a veteran backup running back.

Wednesday's acquisition of Le'Ron McClain, who agreed to terms on a three-year contract, fills the former of those needs.

At 6-foot, 260 pounds, McClain is more of a fullback and will fill that role in San Diego as the Chargers move on from Jacob Hester.

The Chargers would like to re-sign Hester but primarily as a special teamer.

McClain spent his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. He signed with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to last season and started 10 games for them.

And Jacob can't!??? And, yes, Jacob is not a "true" fullback because, by nature, he's not a fullback. He's a runningback!

I can only imagine the frustration Hester must feel. He's fast, strong, has good hands, excellent vision, and, when given the chance, productive. Yet, due to his lack of melanin, he's more of an afterthought in San Diego than anything else. A damn shame.

The Chargers are known not to be enamored with their options in free agency — and that was before Tyvon Branch (Raiders) and Michael Griffin (Titans) were franchised-tagged this week — making April’s draft the most likely avenue they’ll walk for a fixture opposite free safety Eric Weddle.

Harrison Smith, no relation, has a huge fan in the Chargers GM, people familiar with his thinking say. The Notre Dame captain is widely considered the second-best strong safety in the 2012 class behind Alabama’s Mark Barron.

Steve Gregory is viewed within the organization as a strong substitute — and to his credit, the veteran has been an emergency rip cord, bailing it out when a Plan A has faltered.

Gregory joined the Chargers in 2006 as an undrafted rookie free agent and, in the past four seasons, has started 31 games. A career-high 13 came last year after Sanders was lost to a season-ending knee injury in Week 2

Gregory will test free agency, which begins Tuesday, for a starting job. The Chargers have kept the door open for Gregory to return to his role as a situational reserve and special teamer, but for now, the Chargers get to be Gregory’s Plan B..."

that would be awesome, I think I read somewhere (probably on here) that a bunch of teams were interested in Gregory at FS, his more natural position, well actually his natural position looks to be corner but FS will do. Hopefully we can see Weddle, Smith starting as a duo with Gregory starting somewhere e lse at FS.

Edit: yes on another thread it has been reported Gregory is now with the Patriots.

The Chargers added three more names today to their lengthy roster.

Most notable is the addition of veteran strong safety Corey Lynch. The 27-year-old Lynch was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Appalachian State. After one season with the Bengals, Lynch was signed off of Cincinnati’s practice squad early in the ’09 season by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he has played the last three seasons. In 2011 he made 25 tackles and one interception.

The quality of black athletes has deteriorated so much over the past 10 to 20 years that very few black RBs are now capable of being "workhorses" without getting injured or otherwise breaking down, whereas workhorses were the norm until recently. Yet running back of course is still a blacks only position with the exception of the occasional White interloper who has to overcome endless hurdles in college and the NFL (and numerous injuries to blacks) to get any opportunities.

Ryan Mathews is ready to "shut everyone up" after passing his training camp conditioning test this week. Mathews is motivated by conventional skepticism that he can't carry the load of a workhorse running back. Coach Norv Turner characterized Mathews' battle with minor injuries as part of the "normal maturation of a young player ... It's not about having adversity. It's about how you handle it, and he's handled it and responded each time."

A few years ago the Chargers were one of the relatively White friendliest teams in the league with 4, sometimes 5, White starters on defense and 4 Whites on the o-line along with QB Philip Rivers. I just watched a few minutes of the team's training camp practice on the NFL Network and it was Rivers and a sea of black on both sides of the ball. Checking their depth chart, they're down to 2 Whites on the o-line as starters, Rivers, and Eric Weddle at free safety, just 4 White starters projected at this point, 5 when Hester is in the game as the designated human battering ram. Virtually no White backups on defense either other than Corey Lynch, who's listed behind Weddle.

Denver should have a fun offense to root for, same with KC now that they have Hillis (even more so if speedy Devon Wylie gets playing time as a rookie). Hopefully San Diego will continue its decline of the past two seasons and Norv Turner will get fired. In fact, I predict that Turner won't last the season before getting canned as the Chargers fall behind the Broncos, Chiefs, and maybe even the Raiders in 2012.

Norv Turner is a POS. It's ridiculous that Marty Schottenheimer was fired after a 14-2 season for losing to the Patriots in the playoffs, but Norv Turner ekes out .500 records and never loses his job because he sometimes gets carried to a victory in the postseason by Rivers.

damn it, there goes by chance to get a great steal in the late rounds in Ronnie Brown for fantasy football, i knew Matthews wouldn't start that many games this year, but the first carry haha. He was touted as being so much better than Gerhart. There was always the debate that Gerhart didn't deserve to go in the first because "the game is more pass oriented, every down backs aren't as valued much" and with Matthews going in the first "hes an every down workhorse that you want for your franchise' (despite never finishing a season health in the WAC). Gerhart would have had close to 3k so far if drafted there, and actually given the chance to be the every down back

Corey Lynch took over at safety after Atari Bigby got hurt against the Ravens on Sunday and responded with a very impressive 10 tackles (8 solo and 2 assisted). Bigby will be out for the next several games so Lynch has a chance to solidify a starting job and give the Chargers two White safeties again like they had when Steve Gregoy started alongside Eric Weddle.

Great news!

Hopefully the Weddle's recent concussion doesn't stop him from playing next week, haven't checked the news yet. Didn't get to see a good close up view of it yet to see if there was any intent to injure him, but on that 4th and 29 I saw Boldin run a good ways like a kamikaze almost as soon as the play started straight at Weddle. Maybe he was trying to get revenge for that time he knocked him unconscious, "wait that wasn't the same guy, Eric Smith? who?"
