i don't really care about this competition, and i think i won't watch a single match, but i wanted to say some things about the teams:

-first, the european or brazilian coaches
9 coaches out of 16 in the tournament are brazilians or europeans

-then, the players born in europe, sometimes bi racial
for example aubamenyang, gabon's best player , who's biracial

morocco : 15 players out of 23 were born in europe
the majority in france, and 2-3 born in holland or germany

the official clip made by a "french" of moroccan descent, featuring all the moroccan players:

typical "banlieue" music

-equatorial guinea: only 2 players out of 23 were born in equatorial guinea
they have brazilians, a lot of players born in spain (who are descendants of inmigrants from equatorial guinea), and some mercenaries from other african countries

i hope a non black team wins, but i don't really care

Many of the players leave their clubs to play in this and that disrupts the leagues. Of course, these African players shouldn't even be playing in Europe. Not only that, this happens every two years, which is ridiculous. I m torn. On the one hand these players shouldn't be allowed to leave their clubs, but on the other hand I don't want them playing in Europe. No European born player should be allowed to play for an African country. It show how ludicrous the world has become as well as the soccer world. These black or Algerian players, for example, born in Europe claim to be European, but then want to play for an African country?

A Caucasian nation has won it the last 4 times.

It doesn't surprise me the African Cup of Nations is in the middle of the European club season. They love to do everything to piss off the civilized world. TNB on a massive scale.

I have never in my life seen a single ACN match. However, I think I might watch one or two this time as a study just to verify my theory of blacks having poor skill. I can't wait to see how many poor touches and miss hits.

Frederic, you can probably make a 30 minute compilation of "Horrid Misses by Black Players" just from watching the first round....LOL.

Here's a great clip from the last African Cup of Nations

yes, exactly
it's like europe is part of africa

@milan klass

great videos
a gorilla....lol

matches between 2 african teams (i.e. 22 blacks on the field) look totally like amateur soccer

i remember when last year south africa celebrated after a 0-0 against sierra leone, because they thought they were qualified
but actually, they didn't qualify, with this 0-0 against sierra leone they were eliminated
can you imagine this taking place in europe or USA?

It's also a very dangerous place. There usually is some sort of stadium collapse, stampede, mass riot or similar. Last time the bus carrying the Togo team was riddled with bullets by some kalashnikov-toting "rebels".

This year, here we go again:

"Africa Cup of Nations: Chaotic scenes blight African curtain-raiser

Police tried to check fans’ tickets ... ahead of Equatorial Guinea’s Group A match against Libya, but several times the crush proved too much and the gates were opened to allow scores of supporters through without being checked.
On at least one occasion, tear gas was used on the crowd... in theory, fans still needed a ticket to get inside.
As the crush threatened a potential disaster, Israeli security advisers ordered the gates to be opened."
http://www.scotsman.com/scotland-on...cenes_blight_african_curtain_raiser_1_2071414

Wow - they even have Israeli security advisors!

it's scary to think that if nothing changes europe will become as dangerous as these african countries

worth mentioning, as the USA play with a black goalkeeper and have bill hamid also waiting to be titular, angola play with a white goalkeeper
Carlos_Alberto_Fernandes8_yasamoykusu.jpg

carlos fernandes

and milanclass, you convinced me, i will watch guinea vs mali
it will be a good oportunity to see larsen touré again, former grenoble player
not to mention there are a LOT of ligue 1 players and former ligue 1 players in these teams

by the way i'm glad algeria is not in this competition because this is what my city looks like when algeria wins:

my favourite one was denmark-nigeria in the first round of the knock out phase of the 1998 world cup

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQCuplnQPPU

nigeria was viewed as one of the best teams in the world at that time
it was a huge surprise to see denmark beat them

look at the beautiful goal by ebbe sand and the wonderfull assist by laudrup

denmark was 100% white and 100% danish

Wow, great goalkeeping by Nigeria .
Laudrup was a genius, one of my all time favourite players.
The way he stops the ball at 1:47 is amazing, and the passes for the first and third goals...
I put one of his goals for Juventus in the great goals thread.

@porthos

i mentionned there were 9 brazilian or european coaches out of 16, but actually they are 10 out of 16

I have no interest whatsoever in this cannibal-meat and couscous-fest. As frederic38 stated, it's no surprise that so many of the coaches are non-Africans. Funny that...

they also should think about playing with white mercenaries as central defenders, since they already have non african coaches

in the same match:

another one:
great own goal by koné, the olympique lyonnais defender

It's like watching a bunch of children play football. Did you see the way they celebrated like they just won the World Cup.

Amazing own goal. He took a page right out of the Maurice Edu school of defending.

in addition to skills, the africa cup of nations is also a competition where you can see real fair-play

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJbSxMt7oH8&feature=related

i wonder if he will still be able to walk after that injury

I told you the ACON would provide some great comedy! Thanks for that!

i heard about the black basketball players that jump higher than whites according to NBA, but in soccer it's the opposite, blacks are so bad at taking aerial ball

I know the Arab teams usually win these events. Blacks must be the worst soccer players in the world. I hope the Arabs win again.

egypt won the last 4 or 5 tournaments, as milanclass mentionned (the last champions were : egypt-egypt-egypt-tunisia)
what was great about egypt was that every player (or close) played for an egyptian club

the last non black team left is tunisia
they will have to beat ivory coast and ghana, the favourites
especially ghana will be hard to beat
if only rhodesia or white south africa could play, they would destroy these black teams

note that for some reason, the white goal keeper of angola was replaced by a black goal keeper
maybe because the match was less important? i don't know, i only watch the goals
Carlos Fernandes was suspended for the final group stage match due to yellow card accumulation (he was cautioned in his team’s first two games). Sudan advanced at the expense of Angola (all of the Sudanese footballers play in their local league and they do seem to be a well-drilled team).
There have been a number of good matches so far, but the defenses are indeed very leaky….Gabon have impressed me the most, I think that they could go far in this competition (as @Frederic mentioned, Aubamenyang has fine skills, he looks a bit like Neymar, I mean that there is a physical resemblance :D). Ghana and Ivory Coast have not disappointed…the North African sides don’t seem to be up to the task this time (and I am surprised that Egypt were unable to qualify), but anything can happen in an elimination match.

Two good goals:

(though the Moroccans were very disorganized here)

Mbanangoyé is familiar to me, as he is currently on the roster of a Belarusian club team.

Nice ball control:

Btw, I remember Egypt’s very decent performance against Brazil in the last edition of the Confederations Cup:

The good thing about this African Cup of Nations tournament is that the national teams are generally representative of their countries – there are hardly any mercenaries (the one exception is Equatorial Guinea) and the players do seem to be passionate about the cause.

thanks for the info about angola's white goal keeper
i was afraid that he could be used as a scapegoat for angola's bad results
tunisia will most likely face ghana in their next match, it will be a real test, if they can beat ghana, they can win the competition

aubamenyang is quite skilled (i can tell because he plays in ligue 1) but something annoys me with him
his father was a profesional player, and he became one of ac milan's recruiters
3 of his sons have been signed by ac milan
again, it looks like organized crime
i can understand talent being genetically transmitted, but what are the odds of 3 brothers turning pro in europe, where the competition is the thighter

You are welcome! No, I think that Fernandes is still popular with the Angolan supporters…he wasn’t at fault for the goals conceded and I would guess that the Angolan expectations for this tournament were not that high anyway.. I think that they also had a white keeper as part of their squad in the 2006 World Cup.

Tunisia vs. Ghana and Mali vs. Gabon should be the most interesting ¼ finals, but all matches are likely to be quite competitive. Yes, a win for Tunisia against one of the big favourites will inspire their team and after that they may have an easier task vs. Zambia/Sudan or Mali/Gabon.

It’s possible that a player who does a good job with a club is well-placed to convince managers to give tryouts to his brothers, other relatives or even compatriots…then he will do their best to help them adjust to the team and “go easy†on them during the practice sessions. However, even if football talent runs in the family, it’s indeed quite surprising that all 3 of them would be offered contracts.
Btw, speaking of African football, this is very shocking and tragic (74 people killed); I wonder whether it’s a result of a football rivalry or a political spillover from the Egyptian revolution:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-16848473
Such disasters are unfortunately not a rare occurrence in Africa (especially since the early 1990s).
R.I.P. the innocent victims…this is absolutely crazy and has no place in sports (or in any sphere of life).

yes, it was horrible to see these inocent victims...

zambia won the cup, it was a very big surprise
they beat all the big teams (ghana, ivory coast, senegal)
the arab team lost to ghana in a very passionate match

in the final zambia did 0-0 against ivory coast
drogba missed a penalty

they won during the penalty shootout, where 2 players from beveren missed their penalty kicks (gervinho and kolo touré)

it's great that only 2 players from zambia play in europe (while most of the others teams have players that play in europe) :
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/02/playing-in-europe-no-longer-ticket-to-victory-kalu-tells-keshi/

much of the credit for this surprising victory goes to herve renard, a french coach who comes from the same region as me

overall this cup was of pretty low level :
http://www.nesn.com/2012/02/arsene-...y-stadiums-at-2012-africa-cup-of-nations.html

the victory of this small african team reminded me about this article that matra posted a while ago, about how european club weakens the african national teams by picking black players for their physique:
http://www.worldsoccer.com/blogs/si...ill-served-by-europes-obsession-with-physique

because zambia has only 2 players who play in europe

Thanks for these clips!

the arab team lost to ghana in a very passionate match

Yes, it was a dynamic game and Ghana looked like the better side, but this red card was probably slightly harsh. Certainly the most ill-tempered match of the tournament.

Herve Renard has now surely entered the annals of Zambian football history….he is strict and manages to instill discipline, but also seems to be really popular with his players. If Renard helps them qualify for a World Cup, he will cement his legacy with Zambia. It’s also very nice of him to dedicate the victory to the memory of those who perished in 1993.

You are right – Zambia have plenty of locally developed players who still compete in the Zambian championship, so they deserve a lot of credit for their performance. Egypt and especially Sudan (despite the Darfur conflict) also have very few journeymen footballers.

As for Ivory Coast - tough luck for them, they have now been involved in three of the longest penalty shootouts in football history (and have lost two of them). The more experienced players like Drogba and Gervinho carry the burden of great expectations and seem to be more nervous than the locally based footballers.
