It's quite annoying to see the injury prone Williams sisters playing again, and of course NBC's coverage today is non-stop glorification of them. John McEnroe just said Serena's athletic ability is "leaps and bounds" ahead of any other player (except presumably Venus). It would be very satisfying to see Sharapova or someone else win.


Hopefully the men's side will serve up another classic match in the finals.


BTW, I keep hearing and reading that one of Serena's injuries was caused by "stepping on glass in a German restaurant" with no further explanation given. What the???? What was she doing walking around barefoot in a restaurant, and the restaurant just happened to have broken glass laying around on the floor? Sounds like another of those concocted injury explanationsthat blacks come up with, ala Brandon Marshall hurting his shoulder when he tripped over a McDonald's wrapper, and Thomas Jones breaking his hand answering the telephone.

Good stuff, Don! Stepping on glass is obviously phoney, but it isn't as funny as tripping over a wrapper. Slipping on a wrapper would make (a little) more sense but hey, we're dealing with blacks here. TNB all the way. Say anything and do anything to try to keep from looking bad.

Unfortunately, there's a good chance that we will see an all-Williams final, with one of these disgraceful creatures winning the title. This says nothing about their ability, though. They've looked mediocre in the first week, losing sets to lower caliber opponents while pulling out wins. But they appear to be gaining form for the 2nd week.

The problem is the overall state of women's tennis. The erratic and inconsistent play of the White Europeans means anyone can win any tournament now. That's why you have old players like Schiavone, Na, and the Williams sisters still winning GSs in their late 20s/early 30s, or Clisjters coming out of retirement to win 3 more majors. It's the complete opposite of what's happening on the men's side.

For whatever reason, the next Graf/Seles/Hingis/Henin has not emerged. It's just a bunch of pretenders with no one ready to claim the top spot.

It looked for a while like the Russian girls were going to dominate, but none have been consistent. During the French Open, Martina Navratilova was complaining that the girls aren't in good enough shape and don't know how to train properly. I can't stand Martina's flaming liberalism but she knows tennis and it's true that a lot of the female players don't look in very good shape. It's bewildering considering the popularity of the sport and the kind of money that can be made.

I wish Caroline Wozniacki would go a head and take this thing. Question is, can she do more than just strike from the baseline. She wants to counterpunch from that position. She'll have to be a bit more wily and take some initiative to make an impression on the top tier players to have a chance. Odds are more in her favor on the other Grand Slam surfaces at this point in her career, imho. Still, it would be a refreshing win and a good story.

I should say, I have not watched Caroline Wozniacki play this tournament. My assessment of her play is from prior form. Is she doing anything different this tournament? She could have a run in with Sharapova.

Now that you mention it I haven't seen Caroline either in this tournament even though I've been seeing at least 2/3 of all the televised coverage. She's technically a #1 seed, good looking, and fluent in English, you'd think the TV networks would be all over her. But no, ESPN/NBC have other ideas. I have to say though Caroline's style of play is frustrating to watch. She's what tennis fans refer to as a "pusher". That is she just returns the ball safely relying on her opponents to lose the point rather than winning it herself. She's young, she's still got some developing to do so hopefully she'll get better. As for Serena I think if she gets into a 3 set match she could lose to an inferior player simply because she's carrying a lot of weight and doesn't strike me as having much stamina.

The big stories so far. The emergence of Aussie teen Bernard Tomic who dismantled top five player Robin Soderling in the third round. Federer and Nadal are winning their matches without breaking a sweat. Roddick lost in straight sets to a Spaniard he'd never lost to before in what is the tournament best suited to his game. I think Roddick is just about done.

BTW all the remaining male players will be on court Monday. It should be a great day of tennis.

Roddick has been going downhill ever since he got married, so I'm not surprised to see it. One can also argue that he hasn't been the same since losing that epic Wimbledon final to Federer in 2009. I think it's a combination of the two (he'd gotten married right around that time anyway).

The future of US men in tennis looks bleak, as does the women. The caste system is quite possibly one reason, but there's gotta be others. Whites are still dominating tennis, just not from the US.

Very impressive. I thought NBC's Ted Robinson was going to start crying.

A routine win for Murray. I noticed Prince William and Catherine were watching Murray instead of Serena. Will they be accused of racism?

As much as I detest the williams sisters I have to give them and their father credit for the fact that their success was achieved the unconventional way. Let's face it go anywhere outside your home and find the nearest tennis court. Better yet find a tennis court where you don't have to pay an enormous fee just to play. To play tennis usually requires a membership where you have to pay a yearly fee or you have to rent a court for the hour. It's not cheap my friends. But Richard williams took his daughters and pretty much groomed and trained them on his own. He oversaw every aspect of their development. For that I do have to praise him as much as I don't want to. For the past ten years the williams sisters (serena in particular)have been the most dominant figures in women's tennis. Mike Lupica of the daily news wrote that without serena every other player is a number 4 or 5 which I have to agree. The state of women's tennis is a tossup these days which could be good or bad. On the one hand you don't have a dominant figure who just about cleans house the way serena did for 3-4 years. Sometimes variety can be a good thing. From a marketing standpoint though you want that dominant player who can make the sport more popular. Unless somebody breaks the legs of federer, nadal, and djokovic they're going to have a monoploy on the men's side for another 4-5 years maybe.

Everywhere I've lived there has been access to free tennis courts, particularly here in Las Vegas.

The Williams sisters are unique in that I don't see any dominant black players coming along again for a long time in spite of their success, much like Tiger Woods hasn't spawned any good black players in golf even though blacks love to play golf and more play tennis than is commonly realized.

The Williams' are near the end of their careers, and Woods may be too. All three are injury prone and now play only sparingly. Wimbledon has the only surface on which Venus is still a threat to win; I couldn't be happier to see both get bounced, especially defensive tackle Serena.

We may be very close to an era in whichtherewill bezero top black players in golf and tennis. The media will sob andblame "racism" which will make it even sweeter.They may compensate by concentrating even more on hyping the NBA and NFL, but the NBA has already declined markedly in popularity despite the best efforts of the media.

Fans at Wimbledon unleashed a huge roar when Serena Williams lost in the fourth round of the tournament on Monday. Was it because they were cheering for her vanquisher, Marion Bartoli, or because they were reveling in the defeat of the four-time champion?



Like a Rorschach Test of fandom, you can either hear pro-Bartoli or
anti-Serena sentiment in the roar from the fans on Court 1. Bartoli does
have some history at Wimbledon, having made the final in 2007 before
losing to Venus Williams,
so it's not inconceivable that fans were just really, really happy that
the No. 9 player in the world won a match to set up a dream
quarterfinal against Sabine Lisicki. Or they were cheering for Serena's defeat.


The same question could be asked of fans on Centre Court who erupted ina "huge cheer" when news of Serena's loss was announced.Two prominent British tennis journalists said the collective cheer was disrespectful given that Serena is a four-time winner, the defending champion and returning from a life-threatening injury.


If the end-of-match cheering wasn't disrespectful, the hooting and
hollering that took place every time Serena hit an unforced error was.
That's the sort of behavior you expect at a Davis Cup match, not a
mid-round Slam match where fans wouldn't normally have a specific
rooting interest. Whether the post-match cheering is acceptable is
another question entirely.


Though the All England Club likes to pride itself on class and
gentility, the fans are often raucous and partisan. There's nothing
inherently wrong with this. Part of rooting for a specific player
involves rooting against another. And just because Serena has earned
respect at Wimbledon doesn't mean she necessarily deserves it. U.S. Open crowds have never been crazy about Rafael Nadal and it's not a huge deal. To openly root against a great champion, however, is something different entirely.


To wit, when Venus Williams lost her fourth-round match, fans showered her with cheers.

Where is it you live??? There is a tennis court every couple of miles where I live. Each and every public park has one. They are remants of the Great White Civilization that has been ethnically purged from amerikkka.

Since few whites live in urban areas anymore and even fewer venture out in public parks the courts are unused and overgrown with weeds and garbage with ripped and worn nets. But the basketball courts right next to them are full so I imagine if black kids wanted to play they could. I'm sure there is a govt agency that would happily provide balls and rackets, even lights for "midnight tennis" if they were so inclined.

I think your point is well taken about the Williams father being an obsessed bastard that hounded his kids into playing the sport during their chid hood much like Woods' father did for his boy. I guess all you need is psychotic black fathers and you can get a couple of blacks that excel at white sports. Maybe it's good so few blacks have fathers in their lives?

I watched Bartoli warrior-her-way through Serena which was inspiring. The crowd support for Bartoli was damn inspiring as well! A person can be happy and give praise to our girl for a great win, without throwing bombs at the "other"..
