I'm still pumped about the German Indoor Championships. To see Blum and Ernst do what they did was great. Blum looked very fast and fluid through all three rounds. Blum ran a 6.67, 6.65 and then 6.63 in the finals. He is ingood form at the momentand ready for theeuropean indoors in Paris. Ernst just keeps getting better every week. You can see how he had the talent to beat Lemaitre a few weeks ago in the 200. Even now, Lemaitre would have a tough time running down Sebastian.I would like to see him get close to 20 seconds flat outdoors. Edited by: white lightning

Just to put it into perspective, Sebastian Ernst ran one of the fastest indoor 200 times in a long time. He is not too far off Linford Christies European Record. We all know that Christie was a known drug cheat too as he was busted later on in his career. This is an outstanding result for Sebastian despite litte competition. Imagine if he had someone to push him.

I was completely unaware of this guy.
So yet another American white guy making waves in the 400m.
In the 80s and 90s, there was nobody. But recently there have been quite a few.
I got to believe that Jeremy Wariner is the reason.
His success inspired others, and made believers of them, that they could also be successful in the 400m.
I'm hoping Lemaitre will have a similar effect. But not too many American kids would have ever heard of him.Edited by: jacknyc

I'm not familiar with Courtney. Amazed he won the US championships, but freshmen Neil Braddy ran a faster time than Courtney's winning run twice this weekend (see the next Wariner thread), and both Marek Niit and Ben Skidmore beat that time, too. It's an absolute Renaissance in the 400 (although I'm concerned that it would take a miracle for anyone to ever beat Kirani James, who's looking like the best 400 guy in the world right now).

I forgot to add that in the 200 finals in Germany, A.Kosenkow ran a time of 20.65 in a different race! That is a fantastic time. Maybe he still has a little gas left in the tank despite being in his 30's. Robert Herring is slowly working his way back. Robert ran 21.00 flat. He is only 20 years of age and he has a 20.41 p.b. outdoors from 2009. I'm hoping he can stay healthy and have a huge year. Edited by: white lightning

Here's a video of one of my favorites, Laura Roesler ("supergirl"). Once again, she demonstrates that she should probably be specializing in the 400, not the 800. As a freshman, she's had a good year in the 800, and should finish in the top 5 at the NCAA's, but in meet after meet she runs the blowout leg for Oregon in the 4 x 400, even after tiring her legs in the 8. She did the same thing, running the fastest leg in the World Junior championships last year. Sooner or later, her coaches need to realize what a brilliant 400 runner she is. Anyway, in this video she is the third leg of Oregon's relay. She maintains her lead for the first lap and then doubles it in the second lap, running a time two seconds faster than either of the first two legs and prompting the announcers to assume the clock must be wrong. It's not wrong. She's just that fast:

Shane Crawford of Purdue finished 2nd in the 60 meters finals of the Big 12 Indoor Champs. He ran a time of 6.71 and he only lost by 1/100th of a second. This is his senior year so hopefully he can make some noise outdoors.

Crawford ran 6.68 at Notre Dame today.
A good time and closer to where he should be.
Hope he's going to have a good outdoor season.

Karlis Daube is a sophomore at Western Kentucky who won the Sun Belt Conference Championship in the 55-meter hurdles a few days ago. Daube, a Latvian who took the bronze medal in the 110-hurdles in the 2009 European Junior Championships, posted the top two times of the weekend: 7.51 in the qualifying rounds and 7.52 in the final. he will turn 22 years of age at the end of April.

another talented young hurdler is Iowa's Jordan Mullen. the sophomore took second in the 60-meter Big Ten Championship. he set the school record with a 7.75 on January 22.

last year New Mexico's Richard York was the first freshman in school history and the second in MWC history to win the Conference Championship in the decathlon. now a sophomore, York followed it up by winning the MWC heptathlon title and setting a heptathlong school-record. oh, and just for kickshe's also the top high jumper on the Lobos.

for Indiana's high jump star Derek Drouin winning championships is a habit. the NCAA National Champion in both the indoor and outdoor high jump a year ago, Drouin is the Big Ten indoor high jump champ, again. he has also been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year. again. he won the title of Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year both indoors and outdoors last year, too. like i said, championships are a habit with this kid who is still just a junior. i guess it probably goes without saying that he holds the school record, huh?

also, we've noted the sudden re-emergence of the White 400-meter runner. well, Arkansas' 4x400 relay team owns the fastest time in the world this year ... and the three fastest legs of the quartet were run by White athletes, as seen below.

Yeah, I've been touting that Arkansas 4 by 400 group for a week or so. As individuals, Niit, Braddy, and Skidmore have the ninth, tenth, and eleventh best 400 times in the entire world this year--not limited to college runners. Braddy also has the twelfth best time in the world. And he's a freshman! Plus, as the photo makes plainly obvious, none of these guys has ever touched a steroid.

As for the hurdles times, the 55m is a non-standard distance, and I must admit I've always been more focused on the flats than the hurdles.

I believe the start lists for this weekends big NCAA championships should be coming out tonight. With Braddy, Gehret, Loxsom, Casey, etc, we have some great athletes to pull for.
