I'm hoping Leonard becomes this year's "accidental running back." Right now Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott are the only two RBs in front of him. The criminally prone Benson is a free agent; if the Bengals don't re-sign him they'll sign a journeyman of some sort. At any rate, Scott isn't very good so all it will take is an injury to whoever the featured back is and Leonard should get increased carries with the opportunity to get even more if he does well. Seeing how well Hillis and Woodhead did should be all the motivation he needs to make the most of any chance he may get.

I get that strange sensation as well that Leonard will someone be the "accidental running back." They will be forced to use them, and I hope when it happens he turns on the afterburners and gains a ton of yards so they have no choice but to keep him there.

Jerome Simpson is running as a starter opposite A.J. Green at Bengals camp.



As expected. The Bengals' new-look receiving corps is set, as Jordan Shipley will man the slot and Andre Caldwell will be the No. 4 guy. While Simpson showed signs of explosive talent down the stretch last season, the current quarterback situation caps excitement from a fantasy perspective. We're expecting a run-heavy attack as the Bengals try to hide Bruce Gradkowski and/or Andy Dalton.

I don't think it's possible for Shipley to be used other than in the slot. It's beyond what's conceivable by the Caste System. Shipley is under 6 feet and he's a clear "Wes Welker type" in the eyes of just about everyone other than us here.

Very true Don. White receivers under 6 feet have very little chance of playing on the outside. Simpson is around three inches taller than Shipley, but they weigh about the same so I figured he'd have a chance because he most likely has the strength advantage and both have similar speed. Putting Shipley on the outside would draw plenty of hatred from the DWF and media alike.

With Green an unproven rookie, and Simpson a big-time bust except for a couple of games at the end of last season, Shipley could easily become Dalton's (and Gradkowski's) favorite target. He certainly has the ability to put up huge numbers and become a star like Welker even if he is misused.

I disagree! Simpson has only had three years to mature, and a "big time" talent like him often needs 5+ years to realize his limitless "upside". Besides that, I'm sure they had to special-order the helmets to fit over his extra-large dome, and they wouldn't want that money to be wasted......

It's only taken three years but it seems sumo Andre Smiff is ready to start. I doubt he's in shape and this looks like an attempt from the the coaching staff to try and get something out of a very high draft pick(Number 6). It looks like he'll be another colossal bust.
Bengals RT Andre Smith will start at right tackle in the preseason opener Friday.

It's taken three years, but it appears Smith has finally secured some stability. Friday's game will be his first ever preseason appearance as weight issues and injuries have crippled him previously. The former No. 6 overall pick has the upside to be an asset for Cedric Benson, who badly needs holes to run through.

Injury scare for rookie WR Green: Bengals rookie WR A.J. Green hurt his right knee early in Wednesday's practice and did not finish. He had it wrapped in ice and walked off to the locker room without a noticeable limp, accompanied by a trainer. Both he and head coach Marvin Lewis suggest that the injury wasn't serious. Green hopes to return to the field Thursday.

A day in the life of an American Negro:

Free agent DE Antwan Odom was shot in the leg early Monday, according to WKRG's Jessica Taloney. The shooting reportedly happened around 4:30 a.m. in Irvington, Alabama, near Odom's hometown of Mobile. Odom's injuries are not considered life-threatening. The ex-Bengal was released three weeks ago as he struggled to return to form after a 2009 Achilles' tendon tear.

Defensive end Carlos Dunlap, cornerback Leon Hall, and linebackers Rey Maualuga and Keith Rivers were all originally drafted by the team. Linebackers Thomas Howard and Manny Lawson, as well as cornerbacks Nate Clements and Adam Jones were brought in via free agency. The Bengals traded for safeties Reggie Nelson and Taylor Mays the last two seasons. All of these players are starting or will be expected to play a valuable backup role for the team this year.

Note of course that there are zero Whites talented enough to start. It is of no surprise with all the 1st and 2nd round "talent" on the roster and the infrequency a White defensive player is selected during the top rounds. Do these players live up to their billing? Well the Bengals finished 24th last year in points allowed per game and 15th in yards allowed per game. Pitiful indeed.

What this really shows (and what we've covered here ad nauseam), is the high propensity of black busts and under-performers selected at the top of the draft. This, of course, does not stop or even slow down the yearly gush-fest of GMs, coaches, scouts, media jock sniffers and DWFs pre and post draft. Heck, it doesn't even stop afro-enablers like GM Mike Brown, from giving these players 2nd, 3rd or even 4th chances to reach their "upside".

Beginning the week following Week 6 NFL play, he will be eligible to return to practice under a roster exemption. Upon returning to practice, he may work during a 21-day period, the end of which serves as a deadline for his roster exemption, with his status moving forward to be determined. The Bengals have a bye in Week 7, so the soonest he could play is Week 8 at Seattle.

Hey something the federal govt can do right! Figure that pot smoking black NFL players who make millions of dollars will have some ganja on hand. Nice. Bengals signed Hayden to replace an injured Sims. compare the two articles. Hayden started only 10 games and had 31 tackles and a sack last year, yet he was out of work this season... Sims however will be a sought after commodity next off-season as a "run stuffer", he of 20 tackles and 1 sack on the season. how exactly is he stopping anything?

Gruden should be talking about increasing Brian Leonard's role and letting him compete for the starting job. Hopefully Benson signs somewhere else, but given the organization's fondness for multiple arrestees. . .

Even if the Bengals end up re-signing free agent Cedric Benson, OC Jay Gruden intends to increase Bernard Scott's role. "From a consistency standpoint, you'd like to get Bernard more carries, more touches," said Gruden, conceding that Benson is "scratching his head and not real happy" when Scott is in the game. "On a good football team nobody should worry about who's scoring or who's getting the ball. So long as the team is moving," added Gruden. "... That's the way it's got to be."
