Americans blank Swiss

SASKATOON -- Team USA improved its record to 2-0 after blanking Switzerland 3-0 Sunday afternoon at the IIHF world junior hockey championship before an announced crowd of 12,853 at Credit Union Centre.

The United States broke a 0-0 first-period deadlock on a power-play goal by Chris Kreider at 5:57 of the second period, then added a pair of insurance goals by Matt Donovan and AJ Jenks in the third.

The Americans peppered 49 shots at Benjamin Conz, who was named his team's player of the game after making 46 saves.

Jack Campbell stopped all 22 shots he faced, including 14 in the opening frame, for the shutout.

"The Swiss have a good hockey team and their goaltender made some good saves, as did Jack Campbell," said USA coach Dean Blais. "They're going to win a few games here. We just stuck with our game plan and eventually wore them down. They're playing four ‘D' and three lines, while we were playing four lines and six ‘D' - eventually, it's going to catch up with you."

Kreider was player of the game for the United States.

Switzerland, which is 0-1 in the tournament, plays Canada on Monday.

"We had a good start, but we have to score," said 17-year-old Swiss forward Nino Niederreiter, a member of the Western Hockey League's Portland Winterhawks and highly touted future NHL prospect. "You can't win without any goals."

Wikipedia seems to have a nice breakdown of the world jr. brackets & results...

Kreider's Hat Trick Helps Americans Blast Latvia in WJC
http://www.uscho.com/news/college-h...rsHatTrickHelpsAmericansBlastLatviainWJC.html

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (Dec. 29) â€" Boston College's Chris Kreider scored three times, one-quarter of a United States offensive barrage in a 12-1 victory over Latvia on Tuesday at the World Junior Championship.

The Americans moved to 3-0 in pool play and clinched a spot in the quarterfinals. They can earn a bye to the semifinals by beating host Canada in Thursday's final round-robin game.

Wisconsin's Derek Stepan added two goals and two assists, and Notre Dame's Kyle Palmieri had four assists for the U.S., which outshot the Latvians 62-19.

North Dakota's Danny Kristo scored 2:30 into the game, and the U.S. added five more goals before the end of the first period to leave little doubt about the outcome.

St. Cloud State goaltender Mike Lee made 18 saves in his second appearance of the tournament.

Janis Kalnins made 50 saves for Latvia, which has been outscored 36-4 in three losses in the tournament.--

When Canada beat Latvia 16-0 last Saturday the TV audience in English-speaking Canada alone was 2,500,000.

This event gets the same TV ratings in Canada for an ordinary game that an NFL Conference Final gets in the US!!!

As I type this the USA leads Canada 4-3 in the 3rd period of the last game of the round robin.

it seems the canadian public had the usa/sweden on tsn1 and nyjets/cinc on tsn2 with a 400% higher viewing of the usa/sweden semi-final.

No, that hockey game was on TSN2.

Canada has a Lebanese Muslim on its team, Nazem Kadri. The media in Canada have been playing up this aspect. They even speculated that when Kadri refused to shake hands with a Swiss player after Sunday night's game that a racist/Islamophobic may have been uttered. It's untrue yet the teenaged Swiss player, Nino Niederreiter (who btw is brilliant), has had his name dragged into a potentially racial issue.

Yet in an earlier game Kadri was found guilty of unsportsmanlike behaviour when he did the throat-slashing gesture towards Niederreiter. (In the Arab Muslim world the most humiliating way to die is by having your throat like they kill animals - the halal way). So if anyone was guilty of racially charged behaviour it was Canada's new golden boy Kadri.

yes. according to ipsos; the semi on tsn#2 had almost 5 times as many viewers as the nfl game on #1, which, my point is, good to see the public there not watching a propaganda piece like the nfl that much.

the usa juinors looked awesome in the gold medal game too. i wish americans could have been able to see all the hype around this tourny, and watched a great white sports team beat the worlds best

i hardly see a little whining by the ultra left-wing, misguided and egaletrian canadian media about some slight made by a swiss against a muslim being even mentioned in the same sphere as the hard core garbage propanganda pushed by the zionist media in america against white americans.

The USA defeats Canada 6-5 in OT! One of the best games I've ever seen.

I agree! The game had everything. A fast start by USA. A stirring comeback by Canada. A great tying goal by CA to send game to overtime. Then a superb rush and snap-shot by J. Carlson to win the Gold medal!

And afterwards in the fine tradition of great White Warriors, the two teams saluted each other, stood at attention for National Anthems, and remained in full uniform. All the Canadian fans from Saskatoon stayed behind for closing ceremonies, despite disappointment of the Canadian National Youth Team coming up one goal short.

An OUTSTANDING display of White sportsmanship at its finest. I can't wait for next year's rematch!
