2010 World Cup qualifying

34th minute: tremendous skill shown by Clint Dempsey in the midfield leads to an extended US possession in Mexico's half of the field. after their goal, Mexico had been dominating control of the ball in the US end.

but Dempsey's play leads to an eventual foul, and a Landon Donovan free kick ... oh! Onyewu can't quite get his head to the ball. wonderful ball by Donovan, there. big chance missed by the Yanks.

Donovan is playing well. his free kicks are dead on accurate today.

42nd minute: corner for the US ... Mexico clears it away, and a mexican defender appears shaken up.

a near blunder by keeper Tim Howard caused some hearts to go in American throats, but he recovers. that would have been a colossal mistake!

halftime score:1-1.

the USA gameplan appears to be sit back and wait for an opportunity to counter-attack. so far, the results are mixed. erratic passing on many American possessions has limited our already sparse opportunities. however, a very physical defense has shown Mexico that nothing will be easy.

three yellow cards on the US already are evidence to the physical nature of the game. i thought one was a mistake, because Bocanegra got part of the ball. but, nonetheless the Yanks are playing strong on defense today, which is a good thing because our offense has been nearly non-existent.

negro Charlie Davies has played well, as has Donovan. and Dempsey in flashes. the other starting forward, Brian Ching, has done nothing. neither have our other two midfielders.Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

Thanks for the updates gentlemen, can't believe that ESPN is not carrying this game. Don't have Telemundo which of course wouldn't normally bother me but today it does.

GO Yanks!

7 minutes into the second half and Mexico continues to dominate the ball. the Americans have rarely moved the ball past midfield before Mexico re-gains it and starts applying pressure to the Yank defense.

so far, the defense has held up ... but other than a run out by Davies that was easily thwarted, we've posed absolutely no threat offensively thus far.

59th minute: White midfield Holden comes in for black midfielder Clark who hadn't even touched the ball to my knowledge. terrible.

GREAT reflex save by Howard on a point blank shot!Edited by: Jimmy Chitwood

our defense might as well be the only players on the field ... jeez! if our guys (including Howard)weren't such a strong wall, we'd be down by a couple of goals already.

meanwhile, we've done absolutely nothing to threaten the mexican defense and they keep pressing ever more forward to attack us.

i hate playing back in a shell like this!

the US is playing with fire here ...

beautiful cross in the open field by Holden!

Davies just misses it. what a nice pass! and our only real chance to score so far this half.

close offsides call against the US as Davies was on another breakaway. nice pass from Michael Bradley i think it was. it's hard to pick out numbers with this low quality broadcast.

oh! things get phsyical!

tempers are flaring!

finally sorted out and a yellow card to Mexico's Torres.
things got started when a mexican tried to jerk an injured Davies to his feet ... by his head. the US team didn't like that, and things looked poised for some scrapping for several moments.

Davies is carred off the field on a cart. and it looks like Altidore Cespedes is going to come in ...

save Howard!

US needs to start winning the ball when its being cleared out of its own backfield

yep. Altidore-Cespedes is in for the injured Davies. it looked like he caught an elbow, but unsure who hit him. i think it was a fellow American during the mix after a free kick.

things are getting VERY physical now ...

Mexico is STILL controlling the ball. where is the American offense?!?! we can only stop so many shots. *shakes a fist*

and yet another corner for Mexico ... easy save by Howard.

82ndminute: goal Mexico. off a rebound. *curses*

it was only a matter of time. *swears* nice run by a mexican disrupted the defense, then Sabah came in and cleaned it up. damnit!

2-1 Mexico.

the USA is finally controlling the ball as Mexico falls back to play defense. is it too late? 3 minutes left not counting extra time ...

corner USA ... Donovan is getting pelted by debris from the fans!

ball cleared by Mexico, but the US remains in possession. now we lose it as the clock keeps ticking down.

we're in extra time now ...

how much extra time was added? they didn't show it ... can't be much more now.

game over.

damn.

a heart-wrenching defeat for the US. wow, just listen to the crowd. 100,000 mexicans voicing their hatred of the USA.

this one hurts.
