Who was the last white scat back to get significant playing time? someone mentioned Dickie Post but there has to be others. I know John Riggins was a powerback but had great track speed entering the NFL, but most people remember him after his knee injury when he played for the Redskins in his 30's.

Craig James was not really a powerback (although he did have some power) he looked faster in college before his knee injury in the USFL.

edit: just caught your post about Post, So I guess he was the last one.

I think the Eagles" Dick Vermeil's nephew, Louie Giamona had some speed and was considered a scat back during the late 70s / early 80s.

Or how about Bill Ring during the 49ers first SB campaigne. I would consider him a white scat back.

Ditto to the last two posters and their take on Woodhead and Ellis. It's great to see the white guy the speed option in an NFL backfield. It also strikes at the caste system more so then even Hillis if Woodhead was to put up big numbers. It's one thing to have a big white powerback, that's been done: Alstott, Riggins, etc. but a scatback? Not for a while. Regardless, it's great to see. Been a long time coming.

Not since Dickie Post with the Chargers 1967-69. Post was about 5-8, 190 pounds at the most. He never got a lot of publicity, by the way. NFL Films did a segment on him about 20 years ago which emphasized how spectacular his best runs were.

I posted 2 links and similar comments about Dickie Post on the Danny Woodhead thread.

I loved Bill Ring, but he was not a scatback.
I think Paul Hofer was closer to being a scatback of the 49ers.Edited by: jacknyc

Don Nottingham at his best was that kind of runner, not extremely fast but shifty and capable of power running.

I clearly remember Paul Hofer, he sent murderer OJ Simpson into retirement. He became the starter and had a great year. The second year I believe he suffered a severe knee or ankle injury and never was the same. I wanted him to be a star, but football is a violent sport.

Maybe Jim Kiick or Ed Podolak
I thought you were maybe older than I am. Kiick and especially Podolak were power backs. Podolak resembled Alstott. Kiick was more of a tweener but the Fins scatback was Mercury Morris. Edited by: white is right

Billy Ring was probably my favorite 49'er in those early championship years. He was a tailback on the SB XVI team but really was a mini power back. He was later converted to fullback and mostly played special teams. Edited by: white is right

Dino Hall was a scat back but he was mostly a punt and kickoff returner for the Brownies in the early 80's.

The tease is below, and I have to agree with it. NO team "scares" me right now.

Power vacuum

The Steelers? Nope. Colts? Saints? Packers? Not now. Jets? Not yet. Run down the list of the alleged elite and you can't find a team right now that clearly rises above the parity swamp, Pete Prisco says in Power Rankings.

NFL Power Rankings: Hello, any greatness out there?

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/14079219/nfl-power-rankings-hello-any-greatness-out-there

About Packers: "Here's another high-profile team that isn't playing up to expectations. Aaron Rodgers isn't as good as expected, throwing too many interceptions. They aren't sharp."

About New England: "That was a special-teams clinic Monday night. But you just can't count on that much. Their season will be decided by how much they improve on defense."

About Colts: "They have two losses in the division, which is really unusual. The defense just hasn't had a good first quarter. Anybody see Dwight Freeney last week?"

About Browns: "They should get Jake Delhomme back for their game at Pittsburgh. Then again, Peyton Hillis is the offense now."

About Raiders: "Did some idiot really pick this team to make the playoffs. They are the Raiders. What the heck was I thinking?"

Some in the media were infatuated by the Raiders' D-line, which includes obese busts like Tommy Kelly. He's the definition of "SOFT football player."

You just don't see White D-linemen that are afraid of contact. They have to put in the effort or they'll be benched...

Interesting post, Deadlift. I note a common element to all of the above team's weaknesses.

The Packers are not getting good QB play from Rodgers. Might that have something to do with his receivers not getting open, running wrong/poor routes, having hands of stone?

Patriots/Colts. Defenses having (coal black) troubles.

Browns. Peyton Hillis IS the offense. Not a bad thing, but perhaps having a supa affletic QB and darker-hued other "playmakers" has something to do with the entire load being placed on Hillis' capable shoulders.

Raiduhs. Well, let's just let Al Davis draft some more "supa affletic speedy playmakers". See how that's worked out?

Wasn't Brock Forsey a scat back. The Bears wouldn't have used him anyway. How about Merril Hoge from the Steelers? I would lean more towards Forsey out of these two but like so many others, he was ignorred and called the team waterboy by the coach.

Randy Moss just got traded back to the Vikings.

Great news for Welker, Edelmann, Gronkowski and probably Danny Woodhead too.

In my mind a true scat back has make you miss moves. Podolak while modern scat back size only did quick hitters off either guard or up the gut. Yes I looked up his height and weight and he was slimmer than I remembered from video or hazy memory. But you have to remember players were training naturally. No weights (or minimal), no artificial weight gainers and virtually no PED usage. Big backs like Riggins used to shed weight through training camp and got fitter as the season progressed.
