As you can see at the link below bookies are making Nadal the favourite over Federer.

Rafa the favourite

It'll be interesting to see if his knees hold up. Federer has never beaten Nadal at the French. On clay Nadal has had his number.

Nadal maybe 5 years younger than Federer, but his playing style is so strenuous its adding lots of mileage and aging to his body. It's also alarming on the number of sponsored tournaments Nadal actually participates in for a whole year. Nadal needs to cut down his tournament season schedule or he might retire early (about age 28).

Andy Murray was pretty lucky today. He was two sets down against Richard Gasquet but came back to win in part thanks to an injury Gasquet picked up on the weekend at another tournament.

Federer was on fire. He had no problems at all winning in straight sets.

Part of Nadal's problem in the past is that his home tournament in Barcelona is not a compulsory Masters event but is played the week between two Masters events - Monte Carlo and Rome. So in the lead up to the French he'd often be playing for three consecutive weeks on clay (he almost always makes the final on clay) while his main opponents took a break in between as Barcelona meant nothing to them. This year he won both Monte Carlo and Rome but wisely elected not to play Barcelona. He then took a one week break after Rome before going to Madrid and winning it all. So this clay court season he's always had a one week break between tournaments. It might not sound like much but given how strenuous clay court tennis is, not to mention Nadal's style of play, his body should be in better shape this year.

nadal silenced theblack loving crowd, he is corrently spanking this 18 year old black 6-2 6-2 and he is 3-2 up.

The uk commentators are drolling over the black of course, which is sickening considering nadal is one of the great tennis players ever.

I'm watching the fifth set of Fognini of Italy against Monfils of France. Monfils might still pull it out - though it looks 50/50 right now - but even if he does he doesn't look like he's going to go far in this tournament.

The match was suspended at 5-5 in the fifth set. The umpire or match referee decided to keep playing even after it was too dark to see the ball clearly. The French fans were delighted, Monfils was delighted, but the Italian Fognini was furious. He ended up having a point deducted for arguing the decision too much. The commentators on the international feed agreed with Fognini that the match should've been suspended earlier. It seemed like a home decision in favour of Monfils as he was just starting to play better when it was getting dark.

Quote of the day:

"I don't think they would do that to Andy Roddick at the U.S. Open, to Andy Murray at Wimbledon or to Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France on being scheduled to play Wednesday at 11am (not exactly the main feature of the day)

Fognini currently leads Monfils 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 7-6

There's no tiebreak in the 5th set so they'll keep playing.

Fognini won 2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 9-7

Way to go Fognini. One less "afflete" to drool over.

The commentator on the international feed after Monfils' defeat: "A muted response from the crowd". I'd call that the understatement of the day!

You mean the mostly White crowd didn't HATE seeing Monfils go down? Wow, I can't believe they don't LOVE him enough to riot in the streets after his loss. (Loads of sarcasm intended)

Reminds me of a Odis and The 3 Bigots pro-segregation song from the 60s. I'll change the lyrics to meet forum posting guidelines.

The photographers are having a field day picturing Venus' racy outfit.

It would please me if the Williams sisters gets trounced once again, but I can't see that happening. After all these years, they seem as formidable as ever. They might as well own Women's tennis until their mid 30's.

Is Soderling on Federer's or Nadal's side of the draw? I would love to see a Nadal/Soderling rematch before the final with Federer, hopefully.

That was a lame performance by Roddick. Out in straight sets.

JReb1,

Soderling plays Cilic in the next round. The winner plays Federer - assuming Fed beats Wawrinka.

Venus and her crass outfit are gone courtesy of Nadia Petrova. Thank you Nadia.

Yes! Thank you, Nadia!!

The drone sports casters were marveling at the possibility of an all Williams' final at the French Open. Dream on, Mary Carrillo!!Edited by: SeaJim

I actually forgot it was French Open time of year.

So VERY glad to hear at least one of the Williams' are out. I think I would prefer Serena to be ousted, so it's all good.

I just went and saw what she was actually wearing. I just threw up a bit into my mouth. Thanks a lot Williams sisters, for all the years of destroying a once respectable and enjoyable, safe for kids sport of Womens Tennis and turning it into a chest-bumping-like TNB nausiating experience
