He'll need assistance. When this game is (finally) resumed, he's due up in bot 6th and will no doubt be lifted for a PH, in which case the Phightin's will have to a) retake the lead in that half inning and b) hold on to the lead to the bitter(ly cold) end. Lidge would have to be the one to "close it out in style".

Sport historian.  I remember those days, or at least the early seventies, when the WS ended by Oct. 15th.  I wish we could return to those days.  It's just too cold and too dark now.

We should definitely enact the reforms that will ensure the end of the regular season by Sept. 25th, and the beginning of the WS by October 10th.

I think MLB would be better off if they did do it as in the old days. This means playing in the afternoon in pleasant October weather instead of late at night in freezing cold. The WS would probably get more attention this way, as it used to.

I'd like to see MLB go back to a 154-game season to compensate for the expanded postseason and get everything over with about 10 days sooner than in recent years. Actually, a 150-game season would probably be sufficient, but we all know this is just wishful thinking.

And yes, the games need to start earlier, regardless of issues with the time zones.

I would start the season two weeks earlier and start the games earlier in the post season. It's going to be weird tonight to watch a suspended game that's starts in the bottom of the 6th inning tonight. If the Phillies score early and get Brad Lidge in, this game could be over in a hour and a half. Go Phillies.

Congrats to all you Phillies fans. Great to see one of the whitest teams in baseball dominate the Rays.

Has there been any reports of chimp out? This seems like a perfect atmosphere for an episode of Apes Gone Wild.

You know what, despite the fact that I was rooting for the Rays in the
World Series, it's clear I'm an idiot. I should have always been
rooting for the Phillies. Why? Riots, plain and simple.

Do you really think St. Petersburg would be going nuts if the Rays had won the World Series? Not at all.

In Philly, there's so much pent up anger from years and years of
failure that with one of their major sports teams finally having won a
championship, all that frustration suddenly gets turned into a
destructive joy that makes for tremendous video. Like, say, hijacking a
bus tremendous.

Yep, in the video above, you'll see a fire truck slowly creep its way
out into a sea of people on Broad Street in downtown Philly. In fact,
you might not even be able to tell it's a fire truck at first, because
there are 500 people on top of it.

Were people supposed to be on the fire truck? I think you know the
answer to that. Considering how many fireworks were shot off in Philly
last night, I'm 100% sure that firetruck really needed to get
somewhere. But hey, if you're a true Phillies fan, I'm sure you'd
gladly take a burned down house for a chance to celebrate a World
Series title.

Or have your car flipped. Although having both happen is probably a bit much.

Cole Hamels had a great post-season. One of the best pitchers in baseball. Phillies victory was body blow to the caste system.

Lidge, Hamels, Utley, Werth, etc. Clutch players.

Riot in Philadelphia After the Phillies Win World Series
</h3>

<div ="post- entry-content">
With two overturned cars, numerous bonfires, tear-gas canisters, and a
busload of riot cops, last night proved to one of the most wild and
out-of-control celebrations of any championship that this writer has
ever observed. When the Phillies won the World Series a crowd converged
on City Hall, a mob that quickly went from festive and joyous, to
riotous and destructive. Like a war-torn path of destruction, North
Broad Street stood desolate after riot cops secured the area by pushing
thousands down Walnut and Chestnut sts., past an overturned and burned
out car towards a blackened dumpster, where someone had lit a blazing
fire. The trash that had accumulated steadily on the street fueled
large bonfires beside which people warmed their hands and danced until
they were pushed away by Philadelphia police, who stamped the fires out
and contained them. As the night wore on and sales at the beer shops
skyrocketed, fights broke out. A large fire on Chestnut Street erupted,
a fire that turned out to be an overturned red sedan with a smashed
windshield. Down the street another overturned car stood on its side,
its windshield also smashed. Riot police arrived in a yellow school-bus
and formed a line in amongst the thousands of energized Phillies fans,
who had quickly turned from celebrators into rioters, and tear gas
canisters went off, sending hundreds rushing up North Broad Street. A
photographer's camera was smashed by an angry rioter, as riot cops
swarmed upon the fight, securing the perimeter from any more assaults.
A SEPTA transit stop was mangled and destroyed, the metal twisted and
broken and the framework of what had once been a transit shelter lying
on the street in front of Philadelphia police, who stood with batons in
hand. Walking back from the riot, one man yelled "I hate the police,"
at which point another turned to him and said, "I'd be careful if I
were you."

I could care less about Philadelphia or any other big city in the country full of Obama voters. I am just glad the white dominated Phillies are world champs.

If the networks are showing footage of any rioting they'll try to show as many whites as possible.

Fans used to storm the field when the winning team clinched at home. That's been shut down by overwhelming police presence. But the outside the field stuff is a lot harder to control.

Just wait until next weeks riots, they'll make this seem like nothing.

Well, the rioting is not good. But at least the Phils won. Now if the most white football team wins the super bowl, it will be an even better year.

What a consistent team! A lot of teams have hitters that slump when faced with tough pitching, but they were very consistent. Anyone else think that B.J. Upton should have caught that pop up when the infield was in since he was running forward?

One of the Philadelphia Eagles' black players, Brian Westbrook, was on ESPN a couple days ago and the host's coercing would only talk about Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard's pure athletic ability.Edited by: Freedom

I'm sure it was a pretty fun night in Philly. Although if Cleveland ever wins a championship WATCH OUT. I have a feeling there will be partying and rioting of mass proportions. After all there is 44 years going no now of pent up frustration and despair. The last time any Cleveland team won a championship was in 1964 when the Browns beat Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. The Indians last World Series was in 1948. So yeah it will be one hell of a party but congrats to the Phillies and Cole Hamels for being named World Series MVP!

I made it home from school to make the parade today! It was pretty civil, and everyone just seemed...happy. A strange feeling for 2 million Philadelphians packed into a tight space.

I'm so happy for Charlie Manuel. He looked so humble going by, and no one deserves this more than he.
