The Colts and Patriots are pretty much mirror images of each other. Both start seven whites on offense. Both get whites involved in receiving, the Colts have four white starters on the o-line, the Patriots five, the Pats have the backup white RBs.
The Patriots' offensive line is out of this world good. Brady is obviously a great quarterback, but most white QBs would put up great stats with that much time to throw. As has been noted on this board, the offensive line makes everything else work yet is pretty much invisible in the eyes of the fans and media pundits.
This year it is crystal clear who the better linemen are. The strong offenses and unexpectedly strong offenses -- Patriots, Colts, Browns, Packers, Broncos, Giants, Chargers -- all start four or five whites on the line. The weak and unexpectedly struggling offenses -- Jags, Chiefs, Dolphins, Saints, Jets, 49ers, Seahawks, Rams, Redskins, Ravens-- all startthree or fourblacks. Edited by: Don Wassall

That sounds like all of Alstott's calls under Massah Gruden. We know that Gruden had very little use for Mike beyond using him as a beast of burden...backrow said:

As I wrote on the other thread, if the Patriots kick a field goal instead of going for it on 4th, they'd still be accused of running up the score. At least by going for it on 4th down, they give the other team more opportunities to keep them from scoring again.
As I see it, the Patriots have no other choice - kick a field goal or go for it. What does everyone expect them to do, start kneeling the ball on 4th down no matter where they're at on the field?
In my opinion the problem is the other team's players quit trying when they see the game is out of hand. They don't take is a matter of personal pride to play hard even when their team is WINNING, how can they be expected to play hard when they're getting their ass kicked?

Shogun, your post had me wondering about the rules and unwritten rules of the game. It is interesting that many fans are furious that Belichick ran up the score, but don't give a hoot about the way Schaub got blindsided. Is going for it on fourth down, or going for a touchdown instead of a field goal worse? I guess it is. My local talks show host is hoping Brady gets taken out. He suggests that teams send all eleven defenders at him. That way they'd get even with Brady and Belichick.

The cheap hits that QBs take is tough to watch. I'd rather kick those guys out of the game than be worried about the Pats running the score up anyday. If they are really that good, they will finish 16-0 and eclipse the 72 Dolphins as the best team ever. Until then, they are a really good offense that likes to win. I can't blame them for wanting to score a lot of points. Talk about helping the locker room atmosphere!

Brady is on pace to break the season touchdown record, and they're doing it without forcing it, whether you think they're running up the score or not. The Patriots have a good chance to match the Dolphins undefeated season. Why shouldn't Brady, et al get a chance to do everything can to break these records? Brady is on pace to throw 54 touchdowns! That's amazing!

Anybody see the cheap shot early in the game the black DB put on Scheffler? I think it was Scheffler's first catch of the game, he was already on the ground when the DB rolled by and clubbed him in the head with his forearm. It looked like he punched Scheffler in the helmet. Scheffler looked a bit dazed and took a minute to get up.
I loved the play where Aaron Kampman chased Brandon Marshall around on a trick play where Marshall was supposed to throw a pass. Kampman disrupted the play by nearly sacking Marshall twice, and then eventually did run him down. That was great effort, which the very talented Kampman gives on every play. The replay traced Marshall's path on the play and he ran some 70 yards, and still ended up with a loss because of Kampman's tenacity. I doubt many d-linemen could give that kind of effort even if they wanted to. Half of them would probably go into cardiac arrest if they tried.

Funny thing about GB is that although predominantely dark they got a few white stars on D, a decent FB, white oline, but very caste after that. They could trend towards a NE type roster or end up like JAX pending on the draft and injuries during the next yr or so. Hopefully Kamp, Hawk, and Pop will be around awhile.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chargers cornerback Drayton Florence was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Thursday for his helmet-to-helmet hit that gave Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub a concussion.
While Florence said he'll appeal the fine, Houston general manager Rick Smith said the fine wasn't enough. Schaub won't start Sunday's game against Oakland.
We are disappointed in the sense that we have lost our starting quarterback for at least one game after the player took the crown of his helmet and delivered an illegal blow to Matt's jaw and the fine levied is only a small fraction of the player's weekly pay," Smith said in a statement released by the Texans. "Is that equitable? The punishment doesn't appear to fit the crime when all factors are considered."
With a base salary of $896,000, Florence makes $52,706 a week.
Schaub was blindsided by Florence after throwing his second interception in a 35-10 loss at San Diego on Sunday. He did not return after the second-quarter hit. Linebacker Stephen Cooper also hit the quarterback. Two personal fouls were called, a hit to the head and unnecessary roughness. The first penalty was declined.
It was the second straight week Schaub was knocked out of the game by a helmet-to-helmet blow. He injured his hip on the first one...
What is this about? Two weeks in a row? Open season on Michael Vick's former back up? Or just practice for when they play New England again and take Brady out. I don't know? Just thinking out loud.

It's nice of them to fine this guy and call it a helmet-to-helmet hit, but this guy went for Schaub's head, an obvious strike to the helmet with his hands. They make it seem like the guy just tackled too high and hit him head on, but I saw the play and it wasn't like that at all. It was obvious Florence was trying to hit him in the head.
