"Almost " is in the eye of the beholder. Is a person who is 40 years old "almost" 50?

So yourquibblingover the meaning of "almost," while in the meantime you screwed up the third grade math skills needed to determine the percentage of whites on the Colts? 42% is 42%, not 40%. Thank you for your valuable contribution to the board.

Lovie Smith is like a tired old joke that was old a few years ago, keeps getting worse everytime you hear it, but wont go away. He needs to be fired yesterday.

There seems to be a pattern with black coaches wherein the team initially improves, sometimes dramatically, because the predominant demographic among the players is happy and plays hard for their newly hired "brother," followed by rapid decline.  The best example is Herm Edwards.  The Jets and Chiefs both unexpectedly made the playoffs but then quickly turned to crap.  Marvin Lewis and Denny Green, same thing (though the Cardinals became only slightly less awful before declining when Green was there).  The same thing is happening now in Chicago.


Exceptions are Romeo Crennell, where the pattern is happening in reverse, and of course St. Tony Dungy.  After an initial surge, the Steelers already seem to be falling back under new head coach Mike Tomlin. 

There always has been a tendency for a team to initially improve if the players have a real liking for the new coach. This is especially true of the previous coach was strongly disliked. A black coach would fit very well into this pattern. Eventually, the players start taking advantage of this type of coach. After an initial improvement, the team goes downhill.

During the 1970's, some teams would try to hire a "Lombardi type," or a "tough guy." This almost never worked. The successful coaches in that era, at least, were men who had "been around," and were good at getting the right team chemistry. Chuck Noll was a good example.

I actually liek Romeo Crennel. He seems to be in the Belichek mold and is somewhat fair to white players, certainly more than most black choaches.

I can't believe Gonzo wasn't in the running for player of the week. Didn't he have the TD catch that provided the winning margin for the Colts?
