I don't think we've seen enough of Schaub to know that he is any better than mediocre himself.

In 2005, Schaub's sophmore year in the league, he was 33 of 64 for a completion rate of 51.6%, for 485 yards, 4 TD 0 INT, and a 98.1 quarterback rating. He has only thrown 1 pass this year, an incompletion, so his QB rating this year isn't accurate.

But looking at his stats from 2005 and actually watching him perform in those games, one is left with little doubt that he is a better quarterback than Mike Vick, in every respect.

At this point in the Falcon's season, with their star player having a melt down and flipping off the fans, why wouldn't you start Schaub for a game? Just to see what happens.

I think the whole point about Vick is not his QB rating or how many yards he has running. To me, it's all about him bringing in dollars to the NFL by morphing the QB position from the "boring" standard drop back passer to the "electrifying" unstoppable athletic force QB. Of course, only black QB's could ever fit this role.

But until he can win in the playoffs and beat a drop back QB in the Super Bowl, he will be a failure. This is all about the NFL trying to bring more excitement to its product. But the fans will never buy into a player unless he can win. The NFL can send Vick to all the Pro Bowls it wants but it isn't fooling anyone. Even NFL coaches won't buy into it. This is a copycat league and Vick's style must prove successful to be copied.

I don't believe Vick's style will ever win in the NFL. Conservative football is winning football and the Falcons will never make it to the big game with Vick as their QB unless their defense is so good it can dominate even the best teams it plays. Like the Bears defense in 1985.

Personally, I think Vick stinks, really really stinks, at being a professional QB. I love when I watch NFL Matchup and Ron Jaworski gushes over how Vick is starting to read his progressions better. Jaws will dissect a play where Vick actually looks to his second receiver and talk about how much progress Vick is making. He forgets to mention that Vick is only doing what every other QB does 30 times a game without blinking. Even rookies and backups.

Vick is also in his sixth season and has, at least to me, slowed down somewhat from his college days. In a couple more seasons he will find that defenses are younger and faster than he is. Then he will be done.

Jimmy and GW you have some good points...especially that $130 million, or not getting past the 2nd round of the playoffs is a reason for fans to be hard on a QB... Vicks QB rating is not good, but it isn't at the very bottom. Vick's problem is completion %. He definitley would need a phenomenol team around him to win the big game, but I have seen the guy carry his team with scrambling plays against slower defenses. Every team needs a LB like Urlacher or a saftey likeSean Taylor to counter Vick's speed or he will make you pay. I just don't agree that the guy stinks, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Is he better than Plummer? I'd say so,probably not last year which was Plummer's best career year, but almost certainlythis year


Is he better than Brunell? That's a tough one. Brunell has always posted pretty good passer ratings b/c of above average completion % and doesn't turn the ball over much, but doesn't throw enough TD's. He doesn'tmake enough plays in the redzone, which Vick is good at. Vick is also solid at not turning the ball over.


Is he better than Leftwich? That's a tough one, Leftwhich isa better pocket passer than Vick, but I'd give the edge to Vick because of his awesome mobility and bootleg ability.



Is he better than Volek? No...not from what I've seen of Volek in limited time. I think Volek is a good QB



Is he better than Warner? Yeah, I'd say definitley, b/c Warner is a shadow of the QB he was in the Rams Hey day


So basically I think Vick is towards the top of the pack of "currently average" QB's

Also, if you're going to make the arguement that all the guys in those ?'s were benched, they all had adequete to greatQB's, or high draft picks behind them. I would argue this:


Bledsoe had that one good year in his early career when NE went to the SB, but has done little since, and Romo is just plain good.


Plummer has been solid in his career with a good year last year, but was playin bad this year andCutler is a high draft pick with upside..


Brunell is old, I don't think he should have lost his job yet, but Cambell was a high draft pick and they want to see what he's got.


Leftwhich wasn't playing well this year and had a bum ankle, but I don't think he should have lost his job so fast, but Gerard is filling in admirabley.


Volek is better than Vick and should be given a chance to start somewhere, but the Titans took a chance on Vince Young b/c of his performance in the Rose Bowl, and the hope that he can be mobile like Michael Vick,but post agood passer rating.

I don't agree that Vick is better than any of the guys I listed, except perhaps for this year's version of Jake Plummer. But I'm not going to go through the stats and post them all here again. It's been done already.

What I object to most of all in these types of debates is the double standard that allows black quarterbacks to make mistakes, and then blame them on the receivers, the offensive line, the lack of a running game, ad nauseum. I mean, there are still people in the media who announce in every discussion about Vick that he just needs more time to hone his skills, or learn the play book, or get a better quarterback coach, blah blah blah! Come on, man! It's been six years! They were ready to throw Drew Brees under the bus in less time than that.

Really, the Vick debate has become one of the most tiresome. It's taken six years but *some* in the mainstream media have begun to take notice. The guy blows as a quarterback. If he were white, he'd have been benched a long time ago. End of story.

I could have sworn the issue was he didn't want to play anything but QB. Didn't he retire after he didn't get his way? Crouch was definitely a phenomenal athlete but he WAS short and he really didn't blow anybody away with his passing skills in college to begin with(he had more rushing TD's than passing every year of his career and never completed more than 55% of his passes).
