The Patriots did not make the playoffs with a record of 11-5. How weird is that? How often has that happened?

First time since 1985 (Broncos). Too bad as the Pats would have gone far in a week AFC.

Only the second time since the merger in 1970 that a team with 11 wins didn't get in. From '70 through '77 teams played 14 games.

Damn; the Pats are more white friendly. I think they could have made some noise in the playoffs with great play from Welker. The AFC was wide open.

I liked the 3 division/ 3 wild card format better. It allowed a third really good team to get in rather than a 4th weaker division winner. There are two 8 and 8 division winners this year...Yuck!

I am hoping Curtis has some memorable plays for the Eagles while they last. But still want the Giants in the Superbowl; certainly not the Eagles. I'm hoping Giants/ Chargers or Giants/ Colts.

I really think dividing the conferences into regional zones (i.e AFC East, West, etc.) does a disservice to the league in terms of sending the best teams to the playoffs. How in the world do the Patriots sit home and watch while the Chargers or Cardinals move on into the post season? Keep the NFC and AFC but send the best 6 teams in the standings from each conference to the playoffs. I know the conferences are split up regionally to help limit excessive travel, but that to me is a minor point to iron out.

I'm even more old school than that. I liked the old playoff format: three division winners (when there were three divisions in each conference) and one wild card. I don't mean to step on toes, but it's an absurd system, IMO, when 7-8 or 6-7 teams can hope for playoff spots.

just have a rule where if you are at the top of your division without a winning record then you dont go to the post season if there are other teams in the conference with better records who just missed a wildcard spot. So if a division winner is 8-8 there should be a 3rd wild card spot.

And i was pissed that the Saints couldve went 9-7 and be last in the division missing the playoffs while arizona at the same record goes into the playoffs.

Patriots are definitely better than some of the teams that made it. It is sad that they will not go. To overcome the loss of Brady and still go 11-5 is unbelievable. I think it has something to do with all the great White talent they have on their team. Players who don't give up when it doesn't seem possible that they can win. It just sucks, they wouldve been in if the Jets had won yesterday.

Also, i dont want to see Tavaris jackson beat Mcnabb. I would rather see the Eagles since they at least have a White receiver. Mcnabb has already had playoff success...well some heh, if Tavaris wins then that is another black qb they will consider successful even if they win despite of him. Mcnabb is at least decent, but if I have to hear about how great Jackson is it will make me want to blow my brains out.

Also, they will probably give Jackson credit for getting them to the playoffs when he was not playing most of the season. They will probably mention alot about the two black qb's in the playoffs this year, but probably wont mention much of the two rookie White qbs that took their teams to the post season.

I liked that better too. The fewer playoff teams the better. I'm old school enough to still prefer the days when only the two pennant winners squared off in the World Series. But pro leagues are all about making money, and having most teams in the "playoff hunt" no matter how mediocre they are isn't going away.

When you have eight divisions of only four teams each, there are going to be unfair results almost yearly.

The Patriots not making the playoffs have nothing to do with the number of white starter on their team. The rules for playoff spots have been in place since the new league format was adopted.

I like having division champs myself. If everything was about best record you'd have teams eliminated half way through the season, even when they still had a chance of winning their respective divisions. Having Dallas - Philly and San Diego - Denver play what is essentially an early playoff game is a great way to end the season. It also adds some drama when a crappy team like Oakland can fly across the country and knock a team like Tampa out of the playoffs. If it was all about strict won-loss records many of those games would have been meaningless.

Missing the play-offs at 11-5 is worse then going 0-16 if you ask me. To have such a good year and win so many games but have nothing to show for it is a shame. 0-16, 5-11 what's the difference you're not in the playoffs either way. Actually the Patriots and the Lions had the same end result as far as the playoffs is concerned.

So 0-16, 11-5 what's the difference?

How about going 16-0 and losing the Super Bowl? What's the difference? Might as well have stayed home.

Lamenting your 11-5 season is like a boxer crying because he didn't get the decision. Win the fight decisively or knock him out, it's the only way to guarantee anything.

Patriots win one more game this season, we're not having this discussion.

Or even a tie, they have those in the NFL, right?

i dont know if you are referring to my post, but i never said that they didnt make it because of the abundance of White starters. I was stating that they were able to go an impressive 11-5 while losing their franchise qb probably because they have a majority White team, players who dont give up even when the circumstances for winning doesnt seem that great.
