Pedro Martinez decides to try and steal Roger Clemens reputation as the best pitcher in the game by claiming that he "dominated the steroids era, and did it clean".
The whole idea is repugnant on several levels. Firstly how classless is it for an athlete to go on about how "dominating" they are, especially as in this case the guy is past his prime. I know we're all supposed to be immune to the childish propensity of black athletes to brag on themselves like spoiled children but this one doesn't even stand up to the slightest scrutiny.
Martinez is trying to say that since Roger is a phoney then all the glory should fall to him. Problem is 1) the era he is talking about is before any accusations of Clemens steroid use, and 2) while he was a good pitcher there is no way he can claim that he was better then other pitchers of that era who had as good or, frequently better numbers then him. Randy Johnson, Curt Schilling, and Greg Maddox were all his equal or better, and still are.
Unless he is insinuating that all white pitchers of the era were dirty (ala Petite) and that only he was clean, which is by no means a given. This would be like Jim Thome coming out and saying "I am the premier power hitter of the steroids era because I am clean and the others aren't". Thome would be laughed at before being punished but you can bet there will only be uncritical nods of approvement from the sports media for Martinez.
