I remember that well, I was furious after Harden's dirty hit on Largent. Largent was knocked unconscious and had two teeth broken. Largent was thought of as a squeaky clean Boy Scout type, but he did indeed exact revenge and showed just how tough he actually was. That took place in 1988 when Largent was 34 and playing his penultimate season.
That hit on Largent was one of the reasons why I mentioned the "head hunting" going on in those days in the interview I did with James Edwards for American Free Press. The few White receivers around were mercilessly pummeled, including Largent who at the time was the all-time leading receiver in NFL history. It only made him more of a target rather than a "revered" figure as accomplished blacks are toward the end of their careers. The head hunting still goes on of course but the worst of it has been curtailed as compared to the late '80s and '90s when anything went.

Waddle really took a beating, it was almost like it was a contest among defenders to see who could be the one to knock him out of a game.

Yea, but some of these low IQ fools wind up paying the piper (physically) themselves. Check this one out.... let's not even mention the jail time he's faced since "leaving deh game".
P.S: Looked it up, the one White DB (out of 11) in the Raiders photo at the 13 second mark is ex-Pro Bowl safety Vann McElroy.

Likely the head hunting is curtailed because of lawsuits and insurance premiums. I doubt very much the NFL BOGs ordered a stop to the assaults because of good will or moral compunction.
That's undoubtedly a big part of it. Also the endless encroachments of the Nanny State everywhere in society by which everything is justified in the name of "safety" and "security."
I agree with some of it when it comes to sports. It wasn't all that long ago that hockey players didn't wear helmets, and even goalies went without masks. Should players have the choice whether to wear a helmet or not? Sure, but I don't mind seeing protections that guard against losing eyeballs and having skulls fractured. In football, the head hunting was way over the top and had to be curtailed as black players were also sometimes victims, the most famous being WR Daryl Stingley, who was paralyzed by a hit by Jack Tatum, perhaps the dirtiest player in NFL history.
Lynn Swann was knocked out a few times and the Steelers-Raiders rivalry was so nasty that Chuck Noll was sued by George Atkinson of the Raiders after saying Oakland had a "criminal element." During the trial, Noll admitted that that description also applied to some of his own players such as Mel Blount, Joe Greene and Glen Edwards. Blount then turned around and sued Noll, his own coach, for saying that.
"Defenseless" players who are going up for a ball or just making a catch shouldn't have to worry about a defender launching himself at their head, ribs, or knees. Those plays still happen but not nearly as frequently as before.

Al Davis seemed to have a taste for those dirty players: George Atkinson forearming people like Russ Francis (breaking his nose), Jack Tatum thinking he hadn't done his job unless his opponent was waking up on the sidelines, Lester Hayes spearing Rolf Benirschke in the stomach knowing he had Crohn's disease, and even a white guy, Ben Davidson, going after qb's like Len Dawson and Joe Namath to injure them. Then the Steelers had the dirty Mel Blount, who among other players tried to injure Golden Richards. I agree though, that Tatum was probably dirtiest of them all.
Steve Largent. Played for the University of Tulsa in the early 70’s before I was paying attention. Everything was OU Sooners. Had a HOF career in Seattle. Came back to Tulsa. Became Mayor and then a US House of Representatives. Some of my law school associates were on his staff. Long story short, we had a rec league basketball team, and Largent played a few games with us. He was fast and strong, but couldn’t make a layup. Went to church with my sister and brother in law. Lost the Oklahoma governor race due to a dirty 3rd party candidate sabotage. Never heard of him since, I guess he moved away. If you saw him in a grocery store, you would have no idea he was an absolute beast hall of famer.
For his callous treatmen of his fellow man, Black Jack Tatum got back what he served and did NOT have to wait to die to get it. Tatum retired at 32 and died at 62. He had worked 10 years as an NFL safety delighting in harming and injuring the men he played against. But after football he had to look himself in the mirror and see what he had done to others. Those final 30 years of his stay here were made uncomfortable for him. He called himself the "Assasin" while he played, but life is not all play and games for the cruel and savage sorts. For what Tatum had done to Stingley, Tatum put himself on record as having no pity, no remorse, and no regret for what he had done. At that point in his life he had no idea that he was going to recieve that which he gave. We are told by God "do unto others as you would have those do unto you," and whereas Tatum thought it all fair that he put a man in a wheelchair for life, so it was that the amputator carved him up slowly and put him in a chair. Over many years Tatum sent himself to the butcher; first he lost toes, then a foot, and finally his legs were lopped off and he had to wheel himself about -he too became a paraplegic. All of the butchery he received was supposedly to treat diabetes, but we know he was being treated for something else.
