Take a look back in time and see why we are conservatives that want to preserve the good of us for future generations. Nationalism was the primary goal but it was coupled to honor. Fairness in sport conveys the same meaning of fairness between nations competing economically. The Axis nations wanted merely to trade outside the City of London banking order. Competing with honor begets great dignity on all participants. Back then the most a medalist hoped for was something unique and special for their life's resume. A medalist would go home and enjoy the praise of winning one for one's country and celebrity dinner in one's home town including a write-up in the newspapers.

Quite interesting to see how the games have evolved nearly a century later. The 1936 games were only the 4th Winter Olympics ever, so you can see how some of these sports were at their infancy. Alpine skiing actually premiered this games as an event. You can see in the video many competitors falling all over the place. I imagine some of it is that ski technology has come along way, but you could probably find better skiers these days at any mountain resort on a random Tuesday. The bobsled run was also extremely treacherous and it was interesting to see different competitors using different types of sleds. Kind of nice compared to modern sports, which is all so conformist, as all the equipment has been perfected down to the milli-second. With that in-mind, I'd love to see an event added to represent backcountry skiing. Take all the competitors to the top of a mountain and have them choose their own path to the bottom, through the woods on ungroomed terrain. Just have a finish line that they have to navigate to. I'd watch that and it could be filmed easily using drone technology.

But going back to 1936, in total there just weren't that many events compared to today:
