I am predicting a 2-2 draw, which would be fine for me since that would be the best result possible as far as seeing the top two teams in that group make it into single elimination.

England dominates.

America's continued struggles to find a forward who can scoremake it difficult tocapitalize on England's questions at the back (aside from Terry, of course). meanwhile, if Team USA insists on playing the crippled Onyewu their defense will be a shambles in front of Howard. Rooney (and i expect Crouch) will cut our defense to ribbons.

our midfield will be strong (while England's is incredible), but the Yanks are simply out-matched in this one, i think.

if USA doesn't lose by multiple goals, i think it will be a HUGE upset.

I think England will win 2-0, but anything can happen in soccer. Look at Barnsley beating Liverpool and Chelsea back to back in the FA CUP a couple of years ago.

I hope Joe Cole starts and also Crouch.

England's players are on another level than the US's. They are promininet players on EPL champions and European Cup Champions, while the US players are teams of far less quality. Jay Demerit might start for the US , but he was just released by 2nd division team Watford, while the defenders on England have played in or have won the European Cup and also won the EPL. Terry, Ferdinand(injured), Cole, Carragher. Johnson plays for Liverpool. Dawson and King start for tottenham , now a top 4 Champions League team. Lampard was runner up for World Player of the Year a few years ago. Gerrard was called the best player in the world by Zidane. Rooney top 3 world player.Jole Cole is fantasic. He could be the player of the WC.

How many US players would even make the 23 man England team. Only Howard for sure. Donavon would have a chance. That's it.I would take Donavan over Wright Phillips, But Adam Johnson should have been chosen over Phillips also.

You mentioned the forward problem with the US. Giusseppe Rossi who was born in the US of an Italian father could have played for the US and he would have started in the WC I think, but he wanted to play for Italy but wasn't chosen. He still has maybe 2 WC's to go, but he may never make the Italian National Team.

Well, Crouch is unlikely to start. It would be a pleasant surprise if he did.
England is obviously a better team. The question is which teams has better chemistry and takes advantage of set pieces.
Will be a tough match. US matches up somewhat well with England. The top players and Howard are familiar with pressing EPL style of play.

The 'Gooch' might be the surprising weak link in the back for the US. If I was Capello I'd attack him relentlessly. He is barely match level fit and will struggle with the likes of top English players.

US can play physical and run around and this will keep it tight for awhile.
Yet, Capello will out coach Bradley on tactical adjustments and natural brilliant skill from the likes of Joe Cole, Rooney, Gerrard and others will see of the US.
Frankly, for the US to have a shot they will need super performances from Howard, Dempsey and Donovan.
Not impossible, but England should win.

I say 2-0 or 2-1.
US will do wise to try and score. Slovenia will be a tough opponent for the US. Every goal will count.

A England loss would really be bad for them. Psychologically they'd be crushed. I don't Capello will let this happen.

And unless the rules have changed he can't play for the USA in the future as once you play for the senior team of any country you can't switch to another later on even if you change your nationality.

This is a problem Canada also has as a number of its best players, most notably Owen Hargreaves, have chosen to play for European teams rather than Canada.

I predict 1-1 tie. How many US players would make England's team?
All the US goalkeepers 3, Cherundolo, and Gooch 2, Donovan, Dempsey, and Michael Bradley =at least 8.

How many of England's 23 would not make the US team: None of the Goalkeepers, Upson is only slightly better than Spector. Ledley King, is so injury prone, he is not that good. Peter Crouch if he was American would probably be playing in the MLS.

England's players don't require work permits to play in the Prem. If Edson Buddle and Jozy Altidore were English they might be stars as they would have had the opportunity to develop in the Prem. DeMerit was let go because I believe Watford was relegated. DeMerit could play in the prem. He had surgery on his eye and missed most of the past season.

England's players who all play in the prem, benefit from playing in the best league and thus have non-English teammates in many cases are some of the world's best players.

They also don't have to adjust to playing in a foreign country. Who was the last English player who was a star in one of the other top leagues?

Donovan MIGHT make the English team? He is better anyone on England's team except for the top 3 or 4 .He played incredibly well against all of the top English teams.

You are the typical Eurosnob. I have a question? Which team ended Spain's world record unbeaten streak? It's wasn't England. For you to say Prem team's success in the Champions League is due in anyway to it's English players is laughable. Arsenal is known to carry very few English players. The majority of the rosters of all the top Prem teams are non-English and usually most of the English players are marginal players.

The US always suffers from the FIFA gangster picked refs. The US would have beaten Brazil in the Confederations Cup if one of the corrupt FIFA (rundancy) refs didn't give Michael Bradley a straight red.

In the last WC the incredibly corrupt FIFA placed the US in the group of death despite being ranked 6th by FIFA, while England had the easiest group of all. They had trouble beating Trinidad.

The US would have made the second round but FIFA decided an African team had to make the second round. The US tied Italy but would have definitely won had the ref give the US 2 red cards and disallow a US goal.

In the game against Ghana, Ghana scored their first goal by clearly fouling Claudio Reyna almost breaking his leg. The "ref" ignored the foul which was in the US box. When Dempsey tied the game, the Nazi run FIFA had the ref call a phantom penalty on Gooch giving Ghana a totally undeserved penalty kick.

I don't even care about the world cup because it's as legitimate as Pro Wrestling. The ref for the England game was carefully chosen . He is a convicted felon who was suspended in Brazil for involvement in fixing matches. Therefore, he meets FIFA's referee criteria perfectly.

Sobering and likely valid comments jwhite. We can only hope they allow for a fair match.
As for FIFA's hijinks, they will happen. Only question is to what obvious extent and how do they favor.
I reckon S.A. will be made sure to advance out of Group A. Also, at leasr one other African side will be cherry picked to advance somewhat deep.
They want to push the game there and reward S.A. and all things black for the W.C. Never mind that Europe had to donate a few last minute Billions to make sure they could build the stadiums, infrastructure improvements and other airport and train station upgrades.

I think this will be the worse WC ever. The thievery and crime will really pick up. The media will likely blackout (lol) many of the reports.

Which team will get shafted? or teams?

Regardless, England is the best team in the group and should win all their games.

jwhite96,

you certainly have a lot of pride in America's national team.
smiley2.gif
of course, you aren't even close to being correct, but i guess that doesn't matter when one is caught up in the fervor of cheering for their own team.
smiley1.gif

the only Americans, in my view, who'd be capable of starting for the English national side would be Donovan and either Howard or Guzan (both keepers). Guzan is more talented but inexperienced, while Howard has more experience and the confidence of his head coach.

Dempsey and Bradley andperhaps Cherundolo could make the roster as bench players. maybe. but those other guys you mentioned simply aren't good enough. "Gooch" isn't even fit. he'd not even have been in the player pool had he been eligible for the Brits.

the biggest problem for thepotential American starters who'd be good enough for the Brits, is that aside from our keepers, our best players are midfielders ... a position wherethe Brits have some of the best players in the world.

America's strength, historically, hasn't been in their talent. it's been in their fearlessness and unselfishness to score. they go in with nothing to lose, knowing they're the underdogs, and just let it rip. will this team play that way? it still remains to be seen.

I predict a high scoring game of 3-2 with England dominating most of the play and possession. US will score on counterattacks. The winner......England, but do not be surprised if the US wins. The best team does not always win and England is hardly a cohesive unit.

English players are not marginal players on Man United,Chelsea and Liverpool. Gerrard won the Champions league game for Liverpool against AC Milan. Rooney, Gerrard, J Cole,Terry,Lampard,Ferdinand, A Cole ,Carragher are not marginal players. That's ridiculous. They are mainstays, period, the core of the team.I didn't mention Arsenal, although I believe A cole was on their Runner up team. Tottenham finished in the top 4 with King and Dawson Starting. They also have Lennon,Crouch,Defoe,O'hara,Bentley,Huddlestone.

Watford finished 16th in the Championship in 09-10, not the EPL.Maybe Demerit can catch on with a Prem team, but as what,a backup. Compare that to England's defenders starting on the best teams.

Dempsey scored 7 goals in the EPl as compared to 4 of the top 6 scorers who were English players. Bent was the 3rd leading scorer and didn't even make the English team. 2 other English players had 10. Heskey is on the team to shove people out of the way.

What did Altidore do in England, not much.He played in 28 games, some as a sub and score 1 goal and he is a striker. Granted, he is not on a good team, so that will hurt your numbers some. I think he can be a good player, but I wouldn't choose Dempsey or Altidore over 7 or 8 English forward. There are 7 English Forwards alone who have scored more goals than Dempsey, plus another who has scored 7.

You say Altidore could be a top player if, but the point is, he is not.
I guess his parents should have immigrated to England and not the US.

Why should the English players leave the their own league which is the best in the world and play somewhere else? They grew up there. But Beckham played well in Spain and became a mainstay on the team that won the league. AC MIlan also loved him.Contrary to popular opinion Owen did well at Real Madrid. Hargreaves did great at Bayern before heading to England. But there is no point in leaving when you make a ton of money in the prem,it's the best league and they speak your language.

I am not saying the US in a bad team, but they are a cut below England. Torres said England has the 2nd best team. Luca Toni predicted England will win it. The Chelsea manager, Ancelloti, said England has the most world class players. That being said any team can beat another team on a given day and the US could win. I think the US could make it to the final 8, especially if they get a break or 2 in the sweet 16.But I also wouldn't be surpised if they didn't get out of the group stage.

Think about this. At least 9 of these teams will not make it to the Semis. England, Spain,Italy,Netherland,Brazil,Argentina,Germany,Portugal,US,Serbia,France,Ghana,Greece.

At least 5 of those won't make it to the final 8.

England may get knocked out in the round of 16. You never know in cup competitions.

Who would Bradley beat out? Barry, Carrick, Milner? Maybe in the future he would but not now.All 3 keepers? Only 1 can play.I gave 1 American keeper.

Oh, I am not from Europe.

Jimmy;

European players are very overrated in my opinion especially English players. Also, no one would not describe FIFA as incredibly corrupt with the refs clearly deciding the winners in important matches the worst recent example being Ireland vs France to decide which of the 2 teams makes it to the WC. Soccer should change it's ridiculous rules such as not having replay. Do you know why FIFA won't allow replay ? Because they would not be able to decide who wins.
In last year's Confederation cup which was as close as possible to replicating this year's WC, the US did the following:
1. Spain's defense which has 3 of the top 6 defenders in the world according to the Castrol player rankings was constantly beaten by US strikers and offensive midfielders. The US ended Spain's world record unbeaten streak.
2. The US would have beaten Brazil in the finals but for the incredibly corrupt referee who gave Michael Bradley a straight red at the end of the Spain game .
3. The US received straight reds in the first game against Brazil, Italy, and Spain which is clear evidence of FIFA's attempting to decide who advances
4. When the US didn't receive a red card they destroyed Egypt (which destroyed Italy) and would have beaten Brazil but for their no existent bench . A baseball analogy would be the depth of the players choosen by Bob Bradley would be similar to a pitching staff without any relievers.

England's players are by far the most overrated players in the World. I don't give a sh*te about which American would or wouldn't make England's team. If English players are so good, why has there not been a true English star in the other top European leagues in easily the last 10 years?

Do you realize US players must obtain work permits which require an American player to have played in 75% of it's national team's games. So most of the US players who play in the Prem must be eligible for citizenship in one of the EU countries.

The US is also peaking at the exact right time. In the last 2 warm up games ,they beat a very good Turkish team, and easily beat an Australian team known for their defense 4 to 1.

There is incredible bias against US players in Europe. Those that are signed by a European team have to face hostile teammates and coaches.
When Donovan was signed by Bayern Munich , he was not given any chance to prove himself. Jurgen Klinsmann who lives in the US is one of the few European coaches who is not biased against US players. The Nazi reserve team coach of B Munich said Donovan wouldn't make the B. Munich reserve team. This is the same Donovan who repeatedly scorched Germany in the 2002 World Cup. If the reserve team coach removed his head from his butt, maybe he would have recalled how Germany had no answer for Donovan in WC2002 and how Germany only advanced because the filthy worm Scottish "referee" Hugh Dallas blatantly cheated by not calling a clear hand ball by a German defender which stopped a sure US goal.

No European team has ever won the WC outside of Europe. Without their home court advantage their performances have been much worse. Edited by: jwhite96

The struggle is over. Edson Buddle scored a brace against Australia who is known for their defense.
Crouch is a terrible player who is only good on set pieces. He doesn't even start most games for Tottenham. He is also very slow which needless to say , is not a good quality for a striker. The probable striking partner for Rooney is Heskey who scored 8 goals all season for his club team. IMO, Heskey is not as good as Altidore.Edited by: jwhite96

I don't even care about the world cup because it's as legitimate as Pro Wrestling. The ref for the England game was carefully chosen . He is a convicted felon who was suspended in Brazil for involvement in fixing matches. Therefore, he meets FIFA's referee criteria perfectly.

I said the majority of English players on the top 5 Prem rosters are marginal. On the Wikipedia page on the Prem they have the roster of each team including nationality. You will see I am correct. The top Prem teams usually have 2 to 3 English players who are very good but the remainder of roster shows the majority of English players. Is there even one Prem team which starts a majority of English players? NO

Dempsey had 9 goals despite missing much of the season, for Fulham. Altidore is more talented than any English striker except Rooney. Ask Spain, or Egypt. Against Turkey, he beat 4 defenders in a 1 on 4 situation. Hull City couldn't beat an MLS team. A striker who plays with a terrible midfield can't score many goals.

Hargreaves being on England's team is a joke. Prior to leaving Bayern Munich he never lived a single day in England. He is Canadian (with one parent from England) and only chose to play for England because he knew Canada will probably not play in another WC in Hargreaves' lifetime.

Who gives a crap what Luca Toni thinks. Pele is the worst prognosticator in soccer.

Torres and Ancellotti make millions in England. Do you think they are saying what they actually believe. If Torres transfers out of the Prem and makes the same comment then I'll believe he is giving is honest opinion.

The only way the US doesn't make it out of the group stage is if FIFA decides they will not advance and the red cards start flying.

England 2 - USA 0. there's no way the Americans are beating the the English. Wayne Rooney probably scores both goals.

Well after tommorrow's game somebody around here is going to be eating humble pie, some widely differing opinions on this thread about the quality of the English and USA national teams. I am still predicting a draw in the USA/England game, 2-2.

Altidore is not better than Defoe, Bent, Crouch,Carlton Cole. Maybe he'll get better in the next couple of years. But, he hasn't done it yet.How come he didn't score more in the Prem then? There is a black "English" player named Jerome that scored ten for Birmingham. Kevin Davies scored 7 for Bolton. If Altidore is better, why isn't he scoring?Maybe he'll have a break out WC, but as of now he still has to prove it. Maybe he will. Altidore is better than Heskey, but so are 20 English forwards. Heskey is just a role player who can win headers and take up space.

Manchester United won the Prem and started 6 English players in the Champions League final which they won.Inter had 0 Italians,Bayern had 5 Germans.Chelsea started 4 in the Final. No country has a ton of their own players playing for their top teams. Barcelona had 6 Spanish start a couple of years ago in the final.Real has 5 or 6 good Spanish. That is why Spain is number 1 in the world now and are the favorites. How come the Spanish players who play in the Champions League are not overrated, just the English. Spain hadn't won anything until 2 years ago. England did better in the world cup the last 3 cups. Spain made it to round 1, 1 quarter and 1 final 16. England made it to round of 16 and 2 quarters the last 3 cups.

Tottenham at times can start a majorty of English. I don't want to look it up now. Aston Villa plays with a majority of English players many times. I think I saw a game last year when they had 8 English starters.

I agree on Hargreaves, but when teams like Portugal,Italy,Croatia,France etc get Brazilians, Argentinians and Africans why not get somebody with English blood.

I think there should be strict limits on foreign players, 3 total per team and that's not starters. That means the Americans will be playing in America. They make exceptions in England all the time for the 75% rule. If you are playing regularly for your national team but don't have the correct games played, they will make exceptions.

We need limits because the whole world wants to play in England, Spain,Germany and Italy and that is crowding out home players.Check out the Portugues club teams and see how many Brazilians are on them. It's way too many.

There are about 50 million people in England and I estimate at least 3 billion in the countries who produce soccer players who want to play in England and other Euro leagues, but they would play in England over most other leagues. That's 60 times as many people in the world than in the Uk, so if talent were equally divided there would only be 1 player from England for every 60 foreigners. You have to have limits. This is why there are so many foreigners. There are many more people in the world than England and they all want to play there. Of course, you have Spain,Germany, Italy who take up some players, but these are the leagues everybody in the world would play in if they could. English players can't compete against those numbers, but their top players are some of the best in the world, Period. They are superstars in the best league in the world. Rooney was one 2nd leading scorer and player of the year because he is a great player, nobody just gave him those goals.
Zidane said Gerrard is the best player in the world. Does he have any ties to England? How come Real wants Gerrard and also Lampard and A cole? As I said before why leave when you have the best league in the world in your country? Oh and Lampard scored 22 in the EPL.

Look at it this way at a smaller scale. A town of 50,000 and a city of 3 million and everybody in the town of 3 mil wanted to play for the 20 teams in the town of 50,000. How many players from the town of 50,000 would make the teams?

How come English don't leave and play in another country? That's like saying to a MLB player why aren't you starring in Japan? The US players stay in the US because it's the best league. Ask an NFL player why he isn't playing in Canada? That's why English players stay there. How many Italians leave Italy? Not many. They have all their national team players playing in Italy, but nobody says to them how come you aren't playing in a different country.None of the Italian's national team players started for Inter Milan. The French players leave because Spain and England are better than the French league, the same with Portugal.
How many Spanish leave Spain? 3 and they are in England, which makes the English league that much tougher.

If the English team and the American team were in the EPL, the English team would be vying for the title and the American team would be hoping to stay out of the relegation zone, Maybe 14th or 15th.

Ask any manager to take a team to coach between England and the US and how many would choose the US? The US could win,but that doesn't mean they are better. Barnsley beat Chelea and so did the Swedish team a couple of years ago in the Cl.

As I said before I think the US is pretty good and they could make it to the final 8.But if I had a team to coach I'd choose England over the US.Edited by: Europe

Altidore is the only American forward on the roster with any international experience ... and he's choked in virtually every big game he's played in. the other two black forwards have done nothing, unless you resort to counting Buddle's two goals in a friendly practice game and Findley's missing a quartet of tap ins over the last couple of months (not to mention the erratic sprays on his other shots or his horrid passing or dribbling or ... ).

the only "American" forward who has looked impressive is the mexican Herculez Gomez. he's lookedexplosive as a goal scorerin limited playing time, but for some reason Bradley insists bringing him off the bench. at least he can score, though, which is more than can be said for the negro trilogy.

meanwhile, watching the game on the television like the rest of us, Brian Ching has more international caps AND goals than the four aforementioned forwards COMBINED. but, he's not "diverse" enough for the roster, i suppose.

the clock is ticking ... we'll see how "our" team does shortly. i'll not be cheering for any of the guys i've mentioned in this post, though. somehow, i don't think they'll be representing people who look like me when they don their jerseys.
