Frampton TKOs Molitor in six

Unbeaten super bantamweight Carl Frampton (15-0, 10 KOs) punished two-time former world champion Steve Molitor (34-3, 12 KOs) over six one-sided rounds on Saturday night at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Frampton dropped Molitor in rounds three, four and six before the bout was halted. Time was 2:21.
Former world title challenger Paul McCloskey (24-2, 12 KOs) won a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over Colorado’s Manny Perez (18-8-1, 4 KOs). Scores were 118-110, 118-111, 118-112.

Man, I understand that Molitor is on the downward side of his career, but in many ways I think this result (L TKO 6) is disappointing for him.

There was a time, not too long ago when Molitor was fighting for a Title Unification with Celestino Caballero, and was essentially on even terms to win that fight. Molitor wasnt rated P4P, but he was kind of on the cusp of that level. Of course, Molitor ended up being knocked out in that fight, and from there his career has just went downhill nonstop.

Molitor has literally gone from world champion with unification fights, to getting knocked out and outclassed by 15-0 prospects in less than 3 years. It seems his career has just totally nosedived.

Disappointing for Steve.

But Good for Frampton I guess :)

From ESPN:

Carl Frampton, the busy Belfast boy with an entire nation in his corner, announced his arrival in the most exciting weight division in boxing on Saturday, courtesy of a stunning one-punch ninth-round knockout of Kiko Martinez.

In front of a vociferous home crowd in Northern Ireland's Odyssey Arena, Frampton inflicted the first loss in more than three years -- and the first stoppage of a 30-fight career -- to the Spaniard Martinez, relieving the long-standing champion of his European junior featherweight belt in the process.

Hot on the heels of September's sixth-round TKO of Canada's former two-time titlist Steve Molitor, Frampton improved to 16-0 (11 KOs) and confirmed his arrival as a genuine world title contender at 122 pounds.

Headed up by world champions Nonito Donaire, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Abner Mares, the junior featherweight division is red hot right now, with the top three being chased by a strong pack of young, undefeated and hungry challengers -- off which Frampton is now certainly a fully paid-up member.

With former world featherweight champion Barry McGuigan in his corner (son Shane is also Frampton's head trainer), the latest in a long line of exciting Irish world title prospects showed he had the tenacity and temperament to go with the talent.

After a bright, controlled start from Frampton, Martinez took him into the trenches -- especially through Rounds 6, 7 and 8 -- but Frampton, 26, never panicked; he took his licks and produced the finish when it mattered most.

The finish, which came with 14 seconds remaining in Round 9, was as explosive as it was unexpected. Martinez was enjoying his best spell of the fight as his pressure was seemingly getting to the local prospect, who in prior rounds was getting caught on his heels with his hands down and had stopped slipping and picking his way through rounds.

But shortly after being caught by a warning right hand against the ropes, another crude Martinez foray was capitalized on by the young Irishman. As Martinez burst forward, Frampton took a small skip back and, with hooks winging in from Martinez, fired a straight one-two through the middle with the right cross landing flush across the jaw.

Martinez's fitness got him back on his feet before the count of nine, but he stumbled back into his own corner and was stopped by the referee just as Belfast exploded.

Afterwards, McGuigan and promoter Eddie Hearn spoke about Frampton, with McGuigan saying: "He can box, he can punch, he can take a shot. He can fight in the trenches and he can knockout a guy who had never been knocked out. This kid is a world beater."

Frampton added: "I want to be a world champ and I'm getting close. [Martinez] was tough as nails. I told him I'd box him at the start and fight him at the end. And that's exactly what I did. And I also showed I have a solid chin -- he's one of the biggest punchers in the division and I took them all day."

The fight European fans would like to see Frampton in next, of course, is with England's Scott Quigg, another of the unbeaten super bantamweights stalking the chosen few with the belts at the top. But that fight needs a world title attached first.

The problem for both Frampton and Quigg in the meantime, however, is how they get their hands on one from three of the very best titlists in any weight division.

What a war. Frampton was amazing in his step up in class. They were singing in Ireland this weekend. What a great fight. Possible rematch some day. Nice to see Framptons girlfreind come in and help him celebrate. Lol.

As always, thanks for the link Cacharias. You're definately one of the most consistent posters.

What a great fight. Exhibit A for the ignorant "fans" who like to denigrate the lighter weight fighters. These were two warriors putting on a great show. Sweet little move by Frampton to set up that right hand too.

Him and Donaire? One or two more fights and why not? Just make sure state of the art drug testing is used. I don't like the company the Phillipino keeps.

How do you think would fair with Donaire, who I think is considered the best in the division?
I'm not sure, but I think he'd hold his own.

Donaire has been fighting a lot of faded old guys who have been through too many wars, like Arce and Montiel.

And Donaire is working with Victor Conte, a formerly convicted felon and founder of BALCO. He's the leading expert on hiding steroid use from the standard drug tests.

What an amazing win for Carl Frampton! Ireland and Northern Ireland have been producing some absolute world class amateur and professional boxers in the past 15 years, and Frampton continues that tradition.

I remember back a few years ago when Kiko Martinez upset highly rated Bernard Dunne by TKO 1. Martinez has 3 decision losses but all 3 were razor-close fights, and truly the decision could have just as easily went to Martinez in all 3 fights. So essentially, it can be argued that Martinez was undefeated going into the fight with Frampton because his losses have all been controversial and thoroughly close. I rate Martinez as a very good fighter, so I am extremely impressed that Frampton was able to knock him out.

Amazing win from Frampton and he's definitely a guy to keep an eye on! He'll probably be fighting (and winning) for a world title within the next 12 months. Tremendous boxer and its great to have talented European boxers in the lower weight categories.

Let's hope this guy can win a title. We are pretty thin at the light weights with white fighters. We do have some champions like Ricky Burns, but another champ certainly would help.

Looking at the current boxing champs, it seems we also have this guy Scott Quigg. I know nothing about him as I don't follow the light weight fighters but I'll be sure to watch his fights in the future now that I am aware of him.

Undefeated super bantamweight Carl Frampton (19-0, 13 KOs) dethroned IBF world champion champion Kiko Martinez (31-5, 23 KOs) by twelve round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the outdoor Titanic Quarter in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

After dominating the first four rounds, Frampton dropped Martinez with a right hand in round five. Martinez came on a bit down the stretch, but Frampton closed strong and left no doubt. Scores were 119-108, 119-108, 118-111.

I watched the Frampton-Martinez fight live this afternoon (it was broadcasted live in Canada via FN). What a great back and forth fight! Martinez put a lot of pressure on Frampton but Frampton's punches were very accurate and his movement very effective. I liked what I saw from Frampton, and congrats to him on becoming a world champion. Frampton was thoroughly impressive and I can see him becoming a major player in the lighter weights.

There's talk of Frampton's next fight being an all-UK title unification match against Scott Quigg. Frampton's IBF and Quigg's WBA titles would both be on the line making the winner a unified champ at 122 pounds. That would be an awesome fight and it could do big numbers in the UK, no doubt turning the winner into a star. I would imagine both would be paid very well. I'd love to see that fight.
