To me this match-up has been like waiting for Christmas morning (that's when we always opened out gifts I don't know where this Christmas Eve presents stuff started). If Itauma loses he wins the prize for biggest hype/fail in boxing history. If he can knock Hrgovic spark out, as they say in Britain then he is indeed the real deal.

One thing Hrgovic does well is use combinations. If he buzzes Itauma with a shot there will be more incoming for the young man and how he handles that is one of the big questions.

Then again Hrgovic tends to just eat punches. Can he handle what Itauma dishes out though?

I haven't been this jazzed about a fight in a long time.
 
Itauma was so exhausted he looked like he was going to do a Dada 5000.

Hrgovic trained hard for this fight and it showed. Too many easy fights for Itauma did not prepare him for Hrgovic.

The Morrison-Mercer comparison held up, the agony of defeat just took longer to arrive.
 
This was possibly the only way Hrgovic was going to win and he took similar punishment to Mercer against Morrison.

My god nobody else could probably have taken this punishment and had the energy to come for more. Full marks to him he paid for this title and blood and sweat as we stated Itauma was too amped for this.

Probably the turning point was the 6th round where Hrgovic finally unloaded on Itauma and stunned him for the first time in his boxing career. After that Itauma had to pace himself and slowly gassed out and his 8th round flurry capped it.

PS the Itauma corner stopped the fight not the referee or possibly Itauma was going to count sheep for 5 minutes.

-Itauma does not have the chin of a champion (once he started to get lathered up his eyes showed fright and he cracked)
-Hrgovic did come to win not just participate
-Hrgovic did go off centre line to throw his straight right
-Itauma did end up getting sledghammered out
-Hrgovic won the only way he could there was no scorecard in his favor

Essentially, Itauma is a typically protege who fell in love with his power and thought that was going to make him a champion. Itauma may one day be a champion and he could have a career like a Joshua, but he will never ever ever be a Usyk.

Congratulations to Hrgovic who trained hard, has gone through the trials, and earned this victory.

The boxing schedule starts Thursday this week. DAZN is carrying all three cards that I found. I don't think I have ever seen where a fight was listed as 10 or 12 rounds before. The Ruiz Jr and Mielnicki fights are scheduled for 10 or 12 rounds. Unusual.

If he has the goods he should be able to beat Ruiz who has been fat and lazy for years.

There are promotional videos circulating of Ruiz "training" and movies stars buffing up for super hero roles are more intense than Ruiz. Ruiz tools to camp in a 6 figure car and goes home with his obese son. There is a reason why we saw the upset last weekend and it was because he did the complete opposite of this. Hrgovic talked about not seeing his wife and infant daughter for two months and only eating controlled spartan meals. Ruiz goes home and has the ability to snack when he wants and eats a much richer diet.

Ruiz is so far off the path I don't think any trainer can get him on the path for a championship mindset and even then it might not do it as he is well into his 30's and has tons of mileage due to his fighting from 6 years old or so.

If I can remember to watch the Montreal card I may tune in for the Canadian prospect Sanford he looks like has the potential to win a world level title.

Friday has Vito fighting his first live opponent in Williams who has serious flaws on defense and scouting the Williams losses to Sheeraz and Adames would set up blue print how to beat Williams. Vito needs to step around Williams and out box him as Williams while having poor defense fights at a fast pace and could turn the fight into a phone booth fight which in theory would benefit Williams.

On Saturday the retirement match of Taylor has a plethora of Irish prospects on the undercard with the supposed last fight of Dave Allen who has settled in as gate keeper for British/Irish prospects who fights Carty who in reality has unblemished record as his lone loss was caused by a dislocated knee.

I actually favor Allen as Carty hasn't shown me enough defensively or offensively over the underrated Allen(at the prospect gatekeeper level).

It was easy work for the Pole who also scored a violent knockdown in the 7th round and had a brutal follow up attack which had Ruiz wobbling back to his corner less a few moments in the 8th round and possibly a few middle rounds. Yet 2 judges had the fight by single point for Kynba. I suspect Hearn had Ruiz ready to be played on a chess board for Joshua vs Ruiz III if the Fury fight fizzles out or is delayed until the spring.

Mielnicki while scoring a "wider points win" had to dig deep at points in the fight as Williams was pressing through out the fight even while being on knocked knees from getting battered by Vito.

I missed this one in the preview but Alan Chaves was fighting on this card and he looked lost from the first bell and was battered to the mat 4 times by his club fighting Mulatto Latino opponent. There were rumors he had a bad weight cut and this could possibly explain this horrific showing as only his heart let him go the distance.
 
This isn't really Boxing News but I didn't know where to post it. This was a great fight. Have a watch guys!

 
I have no real dog in the fight as both main event combatants have failed PED tests and both have the typical my dog ate my homework excuse but at least Garcia doesn't look like these characters from I assume HGH usage for years...

If the Armenian based out of Germany can take the power of Opetaia we could see a pier 6 brawl as the Aussie star tends to neglect defense for offensive assaults. His opposition aside from Breidas has been B and C grade fighters so it's hard to say how he will react in a real fight since his two wars with Breidas.

PS I failed to mention the Dave Allen Bennie Hill ending of his fight with Carty. Allen will get B side foil work off this highlight reel alone...
 
Ha ha. That's one way to make the sports news highlights. Reminds me of Jerry Quarry's assessment of Jack Bodell after Jerry dispatched him in round one: "He fell rather awkwardly."

 
At the weigh in today Benn looked like a condemned prisoner who was on a soup and cracker diet. This should be easy work for Garcia and there was another fly in the ointment as Terrance Crawford is probably angling for another 9 figure purse in a showdown with Garcia after he cracks the dead man walking in Benn as they got into a shouting match at the ceremonial weigh in.

We also had the drama of whether Mikaelinean will be stripped of his WBC 200 pound title by fighting Opetaia as Don King is trying to block the fight. King won't go silently into the night at 95.

He's always claimed "Whitey" made him into a numbers king and bookmaker and claimed he was the number 1 "Schwartzer" for Cleveland area gangster Shandor Birns and after Birns was assassinated via a car bomb he became the number 1 Black "Piasano" for the Cleveland mafia clan that ran the rackets but King has never taken personal responsibility for any of his misdeeds and still treats his fighters like the gangsters who ran boxing until the mob gangs were exposed by the Kefauver commission.



Updating yesterday's results and as I speculated Garcia made easy work of Benn who was wild slow with his hands and wide open for a counter shot. The wildness and being wide open for a counter shot are technical flaws the slow hands are probably because he is "clean" and his neuromuscular system isn't firing on all cylinders due to Benn being off a Bolt type designer PED stack.

Benn was violently dropped in the 2nd round and the subsequent follow up shots by Garcia had him desperately ducking punches that prompted a slightly quick hook by the referee with the Benn corner being muted about the quick stoppage. If Nigel had felt his son was robbed or truly capable of winning he would have been in the face of the referee.

Also as I speculated Mikaelinean was ground down by Opetaia but he did have a brief moment in the 7th round where he staggered the Aussie and had him wobbly and holding on but aside from that moment he was losing fairly widely on points and was stopped suddenly by a 4 punch combo up close that had the Armenian glass eyed and out on his feet.

As I speculated the WBC belt wasn't on the line for this fight as a decree will be announced on the status of the belt. I expect the title to be declared vacant. In the past King would have had two stooges lined up to fight for the belt but these days the stable of King is threadbare so this could be whomever is next on the list of contenders.

PS a Mulatto heavyweight prospect with a Dutch surname had a set up fight with a failed athlete of various sports ie a poor man's Michael Grant and looked spectacular and knocked out his cigar store Indian opponent but the way the broadcast crew of the Zuffa show talked about the win as it was the equivalent of Itauma stopping Hrgovic, this was the shallow end of the pool with lane dividers clearly dividing the deep end of the pool from the shallow end.

The British card has an all White main event and I assume plenty of White prospects on the card.

Pat Brown while having a non descript name nothing else about his boxing persona is non descript as he brings the heat and has concussive power. He similar to the Mexican Monster(Benavidez) have aggressive styles Brown carries more power but Brown needs to be tested by more elite fighters to see what he has to bring to elite levels of the division.

The American card has nary a White fighter but has the Pitbull who aside from looking like he had Down Syndrome fights in television friendly style. Eurasian Nursaltanov is a bit of a mystery to me as he stopped fighting in North American around the time of the pandemic and retreated to Russian and Eurasian locales and fought out of those bubbles. He is back on North American television and needs to win to campaign for a title shot at 160 pounds.
