the future of icing in the NHL

Who cares? ..... Also the owners are discussing cutting down on the size of goalie equipment. All I can say is that it is about time.

I'm with you on reducing current goalie equipment..
truth is, some of these guys could probably stand still for 3 periods w/this load :couch2:and still block as many shots as they are now..
 
Yeah. It is amazing how different goalies looked from say 20 years ago. The NHL for years has tried to increase the offense by rule changes such as enforcing the hooking penalties and getting rid of the red line but all it really comes down to is the size of the goaltender's pads and equipment.
Granted goaltenders seem to be on average taller then they were way back in the day but they all look like the Michelin Man out there. Of course the player's union argues its for safety reasons but in reality the higher a goalies save percentage... the better chance he has a fat contract still at the end of the day.

I'd think the players union would be more interested in boosting the goal totals though, there's more goal scorers than goalies.

I agree but every time I read an article on proposed goalie equipment reduction the Union always has a problem with it. They should widen the ice and make the nets a couple inches wider if you ask me.
 
As I never entirely trust "the referee's discretion", my answer is "retain the current icing regulations"...

I'm all for "de-bulking" the goaltenders' gear... :thumb:

It seems like the hybrid icing is a good idea as what's the point of waiting on the defensemen to go back for the puck if the play is uncontested. I watch a lot of college hockey and have gotten used to no-touch icing. As much as I like the physical contact the race for the puck on an icing has a "stock-car crash" allure to it as the full speed crash into the boards by two players has got to take it's toll on guys. But it does add to the emotion of the game.
