Can Andy Murray keep the ball rolling and follow up his Olympic Gold Medal and U. S. Open title with another major title? He is seeded number three and on the same side of the draw as second seed Roger Federer. Defending champ Novak Djokovic (1) could meet David Ferrer (4) in the semifinals. Rafael Nadal has still not made it back on the tour. His problematic knee plus a stomach flu has stalled his return.

Nadal isn't going to bother with the US March hard court tournaments either instead he's going to Brazil, then presumably Mexico to play on clay, which is easier on the body. This will give him a run at the French Open. If he's still healthy after that he'll no doubt play Wimbledon and the US Open. However, a couple of tennis observers are suggesting he should just play clay court tournaments for the rest of his career to save his body. I don't think he'll do that but if he gets injured again I think he might go in that direction.

Maria Sharapova has won her first two matches by the score of 6-0 6-0. According to quick research during the match it's the first time that's been done in a grand slam tournament in 40 years.

The muscle-bound and appropriately named Sam Stosur choked big time in front of the home crowd, losing to an unseeded Chinese girl after serving for the match twice in the third set.

Sharapova's next match will be against Venus Williams if Williams wins her second round match.

Maria just dispatched Venus Williams 6-1 6-3. She is on top of her game so far, losing only 4 games through the first three rounds and handing Williams one of her worst losses ever in a Grand Slam event.

Sam Querry, the last American man left in the field, lost in the third round. American tennis is pretty pathetic after Serena Williams.

Great news. Hopefully Maria can dispatch Serena as well. Maybe she can become the next sista killer, like Henin did several years back.

Venus is washed up and has been done for quite some time. Serena, however, has come back from her foot "injury" where she stepped on some glass at a restaurant in Munich (happens all the time). :icon_rolleyes:

Unfortunately, she seems to be playing well, and she's Sharapova's (and Azarenka's) kryptonite. They just can't seem to beat her. The other member of the top 4, Radwanszka, lost to the she-male in the Wimbledon final last year, so at this time, Serena has to be favored to win it all again. Aside from Martina Hingis and the Belgian duo, there just has not been any other female player who has consistently taken it to the Williams sisters and beaten them over the years.

I think a good part of it is mental. Serena is fat and old, and you have to come mentally prepared and execute your game-plan, which should be predicated upon making her constantly move and run.

I suppose BSPN’s arousal quotient is high after American Sloane Stephens moved into the fourth round after winning her match against Britain’s much watched Laura Robson. Stephens may well be the next Chanda Rubin which would be okay. Rubin was a good player who exhibited some class.

Epic match going on right now between Wawrinka and Djokovic (7-7 in the fifth as I type this) - the best of the tournament without doubt.

Only two Americans left in Australia. Both black females.

Wow! I was watching as Djokovic got blown out in the first set and came back from 2-5 in the second to make it 5-5, but couldn't stay awake any longer, and figured it was probably going to be a marathon. Djokovic ended up winning in the fifth set 12-10. Must have been a great match to watch.

If you haven't already seen it watch the match point (almost certainly the best ever match-winning point):

Fantastic finish for sure.

Young black U.S. player Sloane Stephens just defeated Jovanoski the young Serb in a very close match. Both were attempting to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for the first time. As Stephens reached match point, Pam Shriver said, "If she wins this point you'll get to see one of the brightest smiles in tennis." :dizzy: I guess the smiles of the Williams sisters, Tsonga and Monfiels prevent Stephens from having the best smile in the sport.

Looks like Stephens will be ranked in the top 20 after this tournament, so get ready for the U.S. corporate media publicity machine to start hyping her in a big way.

Serena Williams destroyed the very attractive Russian Maria Kirilenko and will now meet fellow black American Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals. ESPN's female dominated announcing crew will be salivating anticipating that one. But Serena is playing better than ever. She's been like a terminator on the court so far. It's hard to imagine even Sharapova or Azarenka giving her much of a match as her brute power is ridiculous.

But her power and linebacker physique can never be questioned by anyone in the corporate media, as the likely punishment for doing so would be suspension if not outright firing. During Williams' win over Kirilenko, Pam Shriver and Chris Evert spent most of the match debating whether Williams is the best female player ever. The consensus was probably but that she needed another year or two of dominance to seal it as she has dealt with numerous injuries (some quite dubious, more a result of not focusing on her game, which is a good thing otherwise she might have 30 Grand Slam singles titles by now).

Evert at one point said that if she was playing now she would hit the gym regularly in order to have more power. Evert when she was in her 20s could have spent 18 hours a day in the gym and not come anywhere close to having Serena's power. Martina Navratilova might have approached Williams' build, but like Williams, Martina isn't lacking in the testosterone department.

As the announcers fawned over her, and the TV screen repeatedly showed her extremely bulked up body, not a word was said about her possibly not being one hundred percent natural, even though her pro career began back when juicing was in full bloom in baseball, cycling, sprinting and other sports.

It's also notable that Venus Williams now looks much lankier than she used to. Venus was never as muscular as Serena, but now that she is dealing with an energy-sapping disease, it may have caused her to stop any juicing she may have been doing.

The two most obvious candidates for media scrutiny about cheating are Serena Williams and Tiger Woods, but both are untouchable for reasons we all know.

Speaking of Martina Navratilova, last night I noticed an amalgamated tennis Twitter feed at ESPN's website. Most 'personalities' were talking about tennis. Brad Gilbert was tweeting about NFL. Mardy Fish showed a picture of what I think was his swimming pool. Martina? She was ranting about Bible oaths in court (she's against them!), guns, and "right wingers" in general. Still as lovable as ever.:icon_rolleyes: Serena took the time to tweet from Australia to remind her followers in the US not to miss some reality show - Kardashian, I think.

The Sharapova - Ekaterina Makarova match gets underway after the completion of the Nicolas Almagro - David Ferrer match. Almagro has 2-1 sets lead over the No. 4 seed Ferrer. Makarova beat S. Williams in last year’s A.O. It be would tough for her to duplicate a similar result, but you never know.

It's always a frustrating sight when you see one of the attractive and feminine looking European women line-up against Serena the linebacker, knowing full well it's not a fair fight. It's not even debatable whether Serena is juicing. Her physique, the overall build, muscle tone and definition, and what is undoubtedly too low of a bodyfat count for a woman cannot be achieved thru natural means. But as you mention, she's completely off limits. If only 1/10th of the energy and vitriol with which Lance Armstrong (and other White athletes) have been pursued could be spent on Serena, there's no doubt the truth would come out.

Her sister has been washed up for a long time, and if she ever was juicing, it was probably short-lived, and the results show for it. Same for Woods, who may be off them now, and his performance levels have also nose-dived quite rapidly. That's one sign that you're on the juice, is that when you get off it, your body and your overall performance takes a huge hit, and relatively quickly.

I'm resigned to Serena winning the Aussie Open for a 6th time, while on the men's side, I'm expecting a Djokovic-Murray final. The two have meet here in the finals before, and it was a one-sided Djokovic victory. However, now that Murray has got the monkey off his back, I would expect and hope for an epic final like that one we had last year between Novak and Nadal.

There's a bit of hope as Serena tweaked her ankle in doubles yesterday, the same one she allegedly hurt in her opening singles match. Sharapova is playing extremely well also, she might be able to give Williams a battle if they meet, but it'll still be an upset if Serena doesn't win.

The Williams girls lost in doubles yesterday to the top seeded Italian duo, but it was still a big upset as the Williams's only play sporadically (thankfully), which is the reason Serena isn't higher seeded in singles.

And yeah, Venus looks like a shell of what she was in her prime. She's also aged quite a bit; I see certain views of her on the boob tube when she's playing where she looks 40 to 50ish.

Serena plays Sloane Stephens today at 9:00 pm EST if anyone's interested in seeing the "future" of U.S. women's tennis. Just kidding of course, Stephens at best might be the equivalent of what James Blake was on the men's side. She's overweight and muscular; the match might be considered as the bulked-up veteran linebacker vs. the young linebacker protegee in training.

Very true. There should be at least a bit of embarrassment by the Serena fans, you would think. Whenever I do glance at comments after a random article concerning Serena, there’s always the adoring Serena fans proclaiming how much they love her and that she is the best of all time. And when the subject of PEDs is brought up, the usual response is that she is the most tested athlete in the world or some such retort.

That doubles match took 2 1/2 hours which is quite a lot for women's tennis and Serena looked gassed at the end of it. That combined with her bad ankle mean she's a bit more vulnerable tonight than she'd usually be so it is unfortunate she's not playing a more experienced player like Azarenka or Kuznetsova (both of whom are playing each other right now) instead of someone like Sloane Stephens who's never been this far before in a big tournament.

Meanwhile on the men's side Andy Murray seems to have had the easiest draw ever in a grand slam tournament. He plays Chardy of France later. CFers will be more interested in the second men's match (starting around 3.30am ET) between a very in-form Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfred "Ali" Tsonga.

With Serena hurt Sloane took too long to get that second set - she even lost her serve when Serena was barely moving due to a sore back. Had she done so quicker she would've broken Serena to start the third set but by the time the set got under way Serena appeared to be recovering. This was a chance to take out Serena but now the linebacker has broken Sloane's serve despite not playing well at all.

Never mind. Serena faded. She's out of the Australian Open.:clap2: Some of her shots that hit the net in the last two games were more than a foot below the tape. She just looked tired and, uh, heavy-legged.

In fairness to her black opponent she seems to have a pleasant enough personality. We'll see how long that lasts. ESPN showed a clip from a match a couple of weeks ago of Sloane saying to her coach that Serena was being "disrespectful" for hollering "c'mon" and shaking her fist at the top of her voice after each point.

Well, whaddaya know? I adopt bigunreal's negativism for a day, and this happens. Glad to see the "protege linebacker" (TM Don) get the win, because seeing Serena lose is always a good thing.

I don't know anything about this Stephens. With all the BSPN analysts slobbering that the future has arrived, I just hope she's more classy and tolerable than the Williams sisters. This is assuming she breaks into the top 10 and remains a top player for the next few years.

I thought Stephens was going to blow the opportunity. I'm glad she won, but the women's U.S. tennis may be in the hands of Stephens and Jamie Hampton in the future. Hampton took a set off of Azarenka in an earlier round. Hampton is non-White - could be Asian-Pacific, or Hawaiian for all I know. It's a diversity dream come true for the USTA. They have invested a lot of time and money in their diversity program.

Williams seemed oddly lethargic from the start of the match with her brute power rarely on display, even before hurting her back in the second set. Don't know if it was the lingering effects from the ankle and yesterday's long doubles match or what, but it was far from championship quality play from the beginning.

Stephens got a gift, as did Sharapova, Azarenka and Li Na, the other semifinalists. I'm not ready to proclaim Stephens a Grand Slam threat just yet. First of all she hasn't done much of anything before now; and second there is the black phenomenon of young athletes who peak early and then fade, particularly so in tennis. The media will be eager to crown her the next great American player but let's give a couple of years and see what happens.

I was just searching for Hampton's background but couldn't find anything definitive. She was born in Germany as her father was working there at the time. Could be he was in the military and she has a Filipino mother. . . lots of military men end up with Filipinas.
