Just read on fightnews.com that Tom Zbikowski the Notre Dame safety will be making his pro boxing debut on June 10th at Madison Square Garden in New York. Tom is 5'11 208 tough, strong and fast. He is a very good all around athlete. Track star in high school, he runs 100 meters in 10.4. I wish him all the best as a football player and a boxer. I'am an Ohio State fan but with more players like Zbikowski and Brady Quinn I really started to like Notre Dame again this year. Go Tommy Go!!!

I thought it was an amateur fight? I hope he doesn't get the boxing buzz, He is real fighter unlike Highsmith and Gastineau. But his future lies in football as a heavyweight he is too small and there is no money in the cruiserweight division....
I think I would rather see him box. There are not many athletes like him in the ring. I have a feeling he is an explosive talent. If he's good enough the money will come. I like him as a football player ,but I have a feeling he's special as a boxer.

I agree. He either quits football, loses weight, and drops down to 175 to fight in the recognizable light-heavyweight division or not bother fighting at all.white is right said:

Light heavyweight is not an option for Tom as he would have to lose 33 pounds. Cruiserweight (200) would make more sense, but who is to say he cannot hang at heavyweight if he fills out to 220 or 225? Tyson was 5'11, 222 in his prime. Brewster is WBO champ at 6'1, 225. Byrd is IBF champ (though his days are numbered) at 6'2, 218.

Bunnyman-I was thinking the same thing. Right now Tom's bread and butter appears to be football. At 175lbs he would be to light for college football. I don't see him gaining mass which would slow him up for being a top DB. I think he may be too small at 5'11 202 for today's heavweights. He looks like a natural cruiserweight.
Vassiliy Jirov was a great fighter between 190-200lbs he won a gold medal in 1996 Olympics [beating Antonio Tarver] and has a 35-3 record. But gained weight and now is just an average fighter at heavyweight. He was 223lbs and could only get a draw with an over the hill Orlin Norris. Jirov could have be Champ at Cruiserweight for years.

Tommy won by a k.o. tonight from what I've heard.I missed the fight but a friend said that he totally dominated the other guy.Angelo Dundee is training this kid who has so much potential.He is a stud whether he stays with football or boxing.Heck,this kid could be a elite sprinter too.Good luck to him in the future.

Tommy Z knocked his opponent out in 49 seconds. In other white action Duddy stopped his game opponent Cuervas in the 7th, and Andrey Tsurkan scored an 8th round TKO over Camacho Jr.
Malignaggi was game against Cotto, but he just didn't have the firepower to get the Puerto Rican out of there, and lost a unanimous decision. No surprise there.

Malignaggi got cut in the first round on a butt which took him out of his game. He has excellent speed and a lot of heart, but his lack of punching power may make it difficult for him to keep some of the elite fighters off of him. Still, it was a very game effort and he did win his share of rounds.
Tommy Z. did not really have a chance to show much of his skills, since he knocked the guy out so quickly, but he does seem to have real power. (The fact that the guy showed up in an Ohio State jersey may have been an extra incentive to get him out of there)
This was a step up in class for Duddy as Cuervas has been in there with some world class guys. Duddy has a good chin and definitely has offensive skills, but still does not move his head very much and moves straight back after throwing combinations which will get him into trouble as he moves up in class.
All in all a throwback night in Madison Square Garden as Irish, Italian and Hispanic fans all came out to support their fighters.
