Any Slayer fans out there? I usually listen to traditional country & bluegrass, but en-route to the gym or BJJ, I like the hardcore metal (Pantera, etc.). I love Slayer's cover of "Guilty of Being White". My other favorites are "War Ensemble", "Angel of Death", "Behind the Crooked Cross" & "Raining Blood". Most of the "heavy" stuff on the radio is like "elevator" music in comparison!

Yeah man! I haven't heard any of their newer stuff, but I loved some old Slayer. They tended to ruin their music with senseless pounding drums and guitar solos that seemed like random noise, but I would just record a tape with all the BS cut out. My favorite songs were "Die By the Sword", "Raining Blood", "South of Heaven", and "Angel of Death". To reiterate my point, "Angel of Death" would have been my favorite, with the awesome riffs and vocals, until it (typically, of Slayer) devolved into senseless bashing of drums/guitars.

Love Slayer and most metal in general. I told my nephew that his high school B-Ball team should come out to Raining Dlood, that would scare the crap out of the other teams. Dixie your on point with your elevator music coment,

most people would not know real heavy metal if it kicked them in the face.

Chalk me up as another Slayer fan. Love Pantera too. What guy on this board cant enjoy Pantera's message?

I listen to all sorts of crazy music, lol. Good to know some of my brothers do as well. Pure, unapologetic, brutal.

And I happen to like the crazy drums and guitar, it takes talent to play quick and coordinated. Listening to old Kill em all Metallica guitar solos brings a tear to my eye, especially in light of thier current situation.

Yeah I didn't express myself well. I love "Kill 'Em All"-style solos (especially the one at the start of "No Remorse"). And Slayer had a few good solos (e.g. "Die By the Sword"). But man I need a little melody. The way most Slayer solos sounded were analogous to those modern art dudes that throw paint onto stuff from across the room.

I totally hear you, i like very fast furious music but there is such a thing as too much. I liked the more mellowed post reign of blood Slayer more. South of heaven and seasons in the abyss were thier best imho.

And as for blistering - Kill em all, Jump in the Fire, around 3:46. Incredibly difficult to play, just an insane guitar solo.

"Jump In the Fire" is my favorite Metallica song! Unfortunately, I lift beers instead of weights when I hear it. My username is not completely inaccurate.

I think Cliff Burton was almost essential to that band. What was that bass solo he did on "Kill 'Em All"? That was awesome--oh yeah, "Anesthesia". After he died, everything just started sucking.

I'm a great fan of Pantera's "Walk". My ex-wife used to go up the wall because I'd play it over and over. But I heard a few more of their songs and didn't like them too much. If you can suggest a good starting point for Pantera, I'd appreciate it.

Slayer has more of a hardcore punk type edge with their speed & ferocity. Some of King's solo's aren't as melodic as other bands, but I love those power/speed riffs. "Skeletons of Society" & "Expendable Youth" have those bad@$$ riffs. I prefer Pantera over Slayer, but enjoy both...especially before "pumpin' iron" or "rollin' Jits"!

Is King the one writing their songs? I can't remember. I think Hanneman (sp?) wrote a lot of their music in the "Show No Mercy" era, didn't he?

They alternate who writes the various songs. Hanneman wrote ones like "Angel of Death" and "Beyond the Crooked Cross", and King wrote songs like "Jesus Saves" & "Skeletons of Society"...which is an outstanding song/ & lyrics.. Araya's written some songs ("213") & co-written songs like "South of Heaven" & "Mandatory Suicide".Edited by: DixieDestroyer

I'm a huge metal fan, but I don't really like Slayer. To me, the best metal is coming out of Europe. Viking/Folk metal from the Scandinavian/Finland area, Rammstein out of Germany.

Too much nu-metal and this rapcore stuff over here right now.

Try workout out with some Amon Amarth, Turisas, Pantokrator. That'll get you an intense workout.
