Did Brent Barry jump further than Jordan and Erving when he won the slam dunk contest in '96. I think so but can't remember for sure. Caste Football received this inquiry:

Could you help with this? If I remember correctly, Brent Barry won the 1996 slam dunk contest. I belive that he won with a foul line dunk and furthermore I think he actually jumped farther than either Erving or Jordan. If you look closely you'll see Barry's foot leaving the ground sooner than Erving or Jordan. Can you guys help me on this one? I can't seem to find the videos. Although I found a couple of articles making fun of Barry for his dunk. Oner of them even called his dunk an "insult."

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks for the link B.A. The shot from the side shows his foot on the line. I'd never seen the video. Replays of Jordan supposedly flying through the air are shown all the time. Barry can jump pretty high and far as well, nicely done.

Good job Bear Arms!

Don't you love how the white announcer immediately says after Brent's jump, "It lacked the rhythm, it lacked the spectacularness [sic] of Finley's jump." He just had to demean it right away.

You know guys, White announcers really aren't as brash and in your face as their black counterparts. They really don't cover what is going on in the game as well either. They really are an embarrasment to journalism. I think they should be replaced in favor of more colorful jouranlists. If you didn't catch the sarcasm there, I'm sorry.

I have the entire dunk contest on video tape if any of
you guys ever want to see the whole thing.Brent Barry
should have been more selfish with the ball in his
career. With his athletic ability,he could have been a
all star every year but as most whites,he is not that
selfish of a player. That night was a very happy one for
me to disprove the myth the whites cannot jump.Rex
Chapman got screwed 2 years in a row prior to that as
did Tom Chambers.

It's been awhile since I've seen all three dunks, but my memory
is that Erving's jump was the shortest, half his foot in front of
the line, or more. I thought that Barry's jump was a little further
than Jordan's. I'd like to see them again to be sure.

I think that is the first time I ever seen this slam dunk contest. I
thought it was just invented in the 90's haha. I know they have a 3
pointer contest right? Have many white guys won that?

White guys have dominated the 3 point contest.Larry Bird
won it 3 times in a row,Mark Price won it several times.
Then you have guys like Jeff Hornacek and the kid from
Washington.Kyle Korver finished 2nd by 1 point this
year.Peja Stoyakovic has won it a few times too.

Speaking of slam dunks, look out for these guys in college
this season,Tyler Hansborough,Josh McRoberts,Henry
Bekkering to name a few.David Lee who went to the Knicks
needs to enter the NBA Dunk contest. He could do any dunk
that Kobe/Carter/Lebron/etc. can do.He is that good!

nbadraft.net has McRoberts coming out after his freshamn year at Duke and going in the top 10, that kid can hoop.

speaking of dunking...i know you guys have heard of Henry Bekkering,
but have you seen the video? check it out, because it is AMAZING!!!
hope the link works for you guys...

Again we see that these type of kids of usually ignorred when it comes to getting scholarships at the big schools. Here is a kid who can jump like M.Jordan, that is muscular, and a good basketball player that ends up going to Eastern Washington. What the hell is that all about. The question is will Bekkering even if he eventually is a huge star there, ever get any chance at making the nba in a few years.I sure hope so.This kid is amazing.

I have seen all three dunks from the foul line. Erving, Jordan and Barry all had their foot partially over the line. I have never seen anyone dunk jumping from completely behind the foul line.

Probably the best dunker in all of college basketball and maybe the nation period is Henry Bekkering of Eastern Washington. He is a sophmore this year and will be starting for the first time.I'm excited to see him grow into a star player. He will really have to have a great career though for the NBA to take notice. He came from Canada and obviously doesn't play for a big school.Don't count this kid out though! He can be a star and can dunk as good as any basketball player ever!!

He came from Canada and obviously doesn't play for a big school.

Eastern Washington went to the NCAA Tournament a couple of years back so they are some peoples Radar. Hopefully they might get in again and get some more exposure for Henry Bekkering!

At one time on the older board,we had that dunk posted. Thanks for reposting the link Bart.Marko had a very short career in the Nba lasting around 2 years from when he was around 18-20 years old.I saw him live at a Suns game and he was special. He did dunks in the game that I had only seen guys like MJ do.That game he had 13 points and around 8 rebounds.Neither the Suns or the 76ers gave him the time to develop. He was chisled from head to toe and an amazing athelete! What a shame that they never gave him time to work on his dribbling, passing and shooting skills. We all know that the Caste System has killed too many kids careers before they ever even got a fair chance!!

Try going to NBA.com and go to the archives section for the NBA All Star Game and the Slam Dunk Contest.Last year they had clips of alot of the winning dunkers including Brent Barry.I have it on a vhs tape myself. The Rookie All Star Game that year was cool too with Barry dunking on everyone.
