Serena Williams is Sports Illustrated's 2015 "Sportsperson [sic] of the Year." Feeling masochistic today, I read the entire lengthy article, a good portion of which focused on the 2001 Indian Wells tennis tournament. According to SI: "Unfounded rumors of a Williams family match fix sparked unprecedented ugliness. When Venus Williams, who had pulled out of her semifinal against Serena with a knee injury, appeared in the stadium with her father, Richard, for the final between her younger sister and Kim Clijsters, vicious booing ensued. Richard later claimed that he heard racial slurs, and TV cameras showed him shaking his fist at the crowd."

Richard Williams is a black militant who seems to hate White people. Serena wrote in her 2009 autobiography that she also "heard the word, ******, a couple times."

According to the SI article, "no outside source confirmed the [racial slurs]," just Serena and her father. Hmm. I highly doubt upscale SoCal tennis fans were yelling ******.

This is probably the only time Serena has ever been booed, and actually Venus was the object of the upset fans. Here's a YouTube of the "vicious booing" and "unprecedented ugliness":

I hear White athletes booed that badly and much worse on a regular basis. But this incident so traumatized Williams that she didn't return to Indian Wells for 14 years. She finally did so this year, and the article goes to great lengths to let us know how scared Serena was to go back there. Was she expecting a Klan lynch mob? She received a prolonged standing ovation, leading her mother Oracene to wonder, "Why are they being so nice?"

It's unfathomable to Whites how fragile the black psyche is, including Serena Williams', who is always touted as the ultimate strong black female. She has been showered with acclaim, fan adoration, almost Tiger-like media fawning, and a large number of corporate endorsements, yet she was obsessed with the one and only time a crowd wasn't friendly.

At any rate, after the Serena article, SI was a pleasure to read for a while for once. Jack Nicklaus was the recipient of SI's Legacy Award. Bryce Harper was the MLB Player of the Year. (But in the opening article it noted how hated Harper is. Among the reasons given: He once said "That's a clown question, bro" to a reporter, and he mispronounces the word "meme.")

Grayson Allen was the college basketball player profiled. That he too is widely hated wasn't mentioned.

Tom Brady was the NFL Player of the Year. Christian McCaffrey was the college football player profiled. Novak Djokovic was the subject of a small article (his year was as good or better than Serena's).

Hunter Gandee was the SI High School Athlete of the Year. Carey Price was the NHL Player of the Year. Jordan Spieth was the Golfer of the Year.

Despite SI's relentless promotion of black athletes, the continuing excellence of White athletes in 2015 was obvious, even to SI.
