Rooting for white boxers

The majority population where I live is Mexican. Mosf of the
people I watch boxing with are Mexican. Whenever a Mexican
fighter is in a match, the racial / national pride is palpable. It
doesn't matter who it is; Barrera, Morales, De La Hoya,
no-names,whomever - they always root for the Mexican
fighter. Same for Puerto Ricans. It doesn't matter if the
Mexicans watching are home-grown, born in the USA, speak no Spanish and
are 3-4 generations removed from Mexico, they STILL favor the Mexican
fighter, even over black or white fighters from the United
States.



But whenever I favor a fighter like Klitschko, Gatti, Ward, or any
white figher, I have actually been told, "You only like him because he
is white," as if this were a bad thing. I have been told that if
I am of Russian decent, I can like Klitschko. If I'm Polish, I can root
for Golota, Irish - Ward, Italian - Gatti, and so on. My rebuttal is
then all of us should root for American-born fighters: black, brown,
red, yellow, who fight anyone from outside the United States. I get
nothing but blank stares in return.



Its another example of white people being 'disallowed' from supporting
their own race, a right and privilege that is denied to them
only, of all races.



Have any of you encountered this phenomenon first hand? Have you had a
chance to engage others in this kind of conversation? What points did
you make in the debate?

When i watch a fight people say to me "You only like him because he is white." I say to them, That's not truei am rooting for him because he is not black."

I live in a area that is similar to yours with a great
number of hispanics.They are some of the most racist
people that I have encountered.Not all of them,but a
good percentage of them.They work here,live here,but
talk bad about the US.They have mexican flags on their
cars and say This is for the raza(this is for the race)
alot of the time.I always hear "Brown and Proud".Whites
are looked down on by them and they do root for only
their fighters.They rarely will ever root for a white
or even a black fighter.Too many of them believe that
they are going to take over this country.
The Census says that within 20-30 years,they could
be the majority in the U.S. Whites need to start standing
up for our culture and heritage!We need to root on all
of our fighters.It is not too late if we fight for our
rights.Tell them that you are a Euro-american and root
for people of european ancestry.If they can root for
any fighter of hispanic heritage,mexican,puerto rican,
south american,etc.,then you can do the same.Root for
all fighters both from here and abroad.Take pride and
never be ashamed.Just be careful because if you don't
have enough white friends around,sometimes it can go to
a ugly level.If they accuse you of being racist,tell
them that you are not doing anything that they are not
already doing.You are not racist for being proud of
your heritage!Always remember that!!

I Second that whitelightning! We should never be ashamed to root for whoever we want to. We need to protect our borders, especially the Southern one, and we need to protect our culture. I hope someone tells me something like that when I am rooting for a white fighter.

Kevin, you should turn the tables on them.Bring up Joe Louis fighting Max Schmelling and Ali fighting Jerry Quarry.I used to be a huge fight fan, talked with all kinds of people. Findinga black who roots for a white boxer is about as common as seeing a black champion on Jeopardy.

Why do you think, besides the actions of white liberals, blacks have gotten so powerful as a group? I believe its because they stick together on everything. If we would do that, many changes would take place.

I do the same. Its been a rare occasion, but it is a bit more common these days.

I'm glad there are many more white contenders and champs these days. It gets me interested in it again. I just hope Klitschko or someone can and will unify the title.

I live in a white community so I dont have this problem. If I got into confrontation I would just say, "Of course I am supporting him because he is white. What do you care."

Why do you always have to explain yourselves? So they don't think you're racist? It's not racist to root for a white guy.

It's only racists to root for a white guy if you do it just because he is white. Most people and I mean 99.9999% of people root for their own race because it is natural, not because they just hate another colored man, just because of his color. Peolple make too big a issue of this.

You have noticed that people are getting les and less interested in the crappy division we have today ? . Unless there is a clear unified champion nobody is gonna be interested in the HWs.

There is much interest in the HW class-you lost interest when the Russians took over.Brewster wants to fight Vitali in Sept.Valuev is Ruiz's mandatory challenger.Tweety Bird is ducking everybody.The problem is the Russians are knocking off the black guys so fast that soon there won't be any colored guys for the Russians to beat on.They will have to start fighting each other.

Speaking only for myself, yes. I don't care about any sport unless there are whites I can root for.

We do? I don't! I don't care who black fans root for. There shouldn't be a double standard though. If blacks can root for Serena and Tiger then we should feel free to root for whoever we want to as well.
