I'm sure many of you guys have heard the news, but if you haven't, know that England's Ricky Hatton, 45-2 (32) is set to make a ring return, scheduled for November 24 Vs Vyacheslav Senchenko, 32-1 (21) due to take place in the M.E.N. Arena, Manchester, England. It will be Hatton's first fight in over 3 years, of course, Hatton's last fight being a disastrous 2nd round KO loss to Manny Pacquiao that left him unconscious on the canvas.
Not sure how I feel about this personally. At one time, Ricky was a big name in boxing, but that's about 5 years ago now, and although he did have some solid skills in his prime, he came up short in his biggest fights. Getting TKO'd by Mayweather, then brutally KO'd by Pacquiao seemed to spell the end.
Apparently Ricky Hatton is very popular in England, similar to how the Klitschko's are popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Hatton once filled a stadium of 50,000+ to watch him fight virtual unknown Juan Lazcano. So perhaps his popularity is a reason for his comeback.
But his KO losses have been bad, and I fear we may be seeing one or two more if Hatton continues fighting. Personally I think Hatton should be fighting an easier opponent in his comeback fight. You would have to favour Hatton over Senchenko based on their resumes, but coming off of a 3 year layoff there are a lot of question marks surrounding Ricky.
We don't know how well Ricky will react to a punch after his KO losses (and 21 KO's in 30odd fights speaks well for Senchenko's power), we also don't know how much ring rust he will carry off of 3 years, and finally we don't know if Hatton has deteriorated further due to drug use in his time off.
I just really feel like Senchenko may be too much too soon for Ricky's comeback. Senchenko is only one fight removed from being a world champion, and maybe Ricky should be facing more of a clubfighter type in his comeback. I do feel there is a possibility (lets say, 25%) that Senchenko beats Hatton and I would very much consider him a live underdog.
How does everyone see Ricky Hatton and his comeback? How do you feel about it and how do you think Ricky will fare? Anyone picking Senchenko to beat Hatton?
