Texans punt returner gets run down and tackled by the punter

Returners often get a hard time when the punter tackles them on the way to the end zone.
Those plays are almost always the same. The returner has just the punter to beat, tries to put on a move, the punter guesses right and happens to get in the returner's way enough to get a tackle. You almost never, ever see a punter get beat, recover, and run down the returner to prevent a touchdown.

That is why the Texans may never let Keshawn Martin live down what happened on Sunday. He had Jacksonville punter Bryan Anger beat, and he let the punter chase him down from behind.
Martin had nothing but green grass in front of him after he got the corner on Anger. Martin passed Anger at about midfield. And Anger turned on the jets and caught Martin from behind, clipping his feet at about the 25. Martin probably turned around wondering what defensive back chased him down, and may have wanted to avoid going to the Texans' sideline after seeing he got caught from behind by the punter. His shame had to grow when Matt Schaub threw an interception two plays later

A lot of NFL punters and kickers these days are athletic, and downright fast. The Garo Yepremian type that used to predominate and who's clumsiness was easily made fun of, is pretty much a thing of the past.

Totally agreed, and for reference, here's a picture of Giants punter Steve Weatherford, who is probably one of the best athletes on the team and possibly the entire league. I think he was some sort of a track star in college.

you are completely correct, foobar. Weatherford set the school record at the University of Illinois in the heptathlon (he only competed in outdoor track one season in college, due to football) and in high school was the National Champion and national junior Olympic record holder in the 4x800 relay and a school record holder in the 300 hurdles. additionally, he was a standout basketball and soccer player before deciding to play football in college. despite all this talent (and impressive size at 6-foot-3), he was undrafted by the NFL. i'd submit that he's a better athlete than any of the defensive backs on the Giants.

furthermore, he isn't alone as a fast, athletic punter. there was a thread some time ago that illustrated that fact quite clearly, listing several kickers/punters who could really run. a few that i recall off the top of my head are:

Kris Brown - was the fastest player on the Pittsburgh Steelers while he was there.

Hunter Smith - was arguably the fastest player on the Indianapolis Colts.

David Buehler - was the fastest player on the Dallas Cowboys.

Brian Moorman - was arguably the fastest player on every NFL team he played on.

he was a 10-time All-American in track at Division II Pittsburg State, including three straight NCAA Division II national championships in the 400 meter hurdles. he also claimed eight conference individual event titles, and Moorman still holds the Pittsburg State University school record in the 110 meter hurdles (13.81) and ranks second all-time at PSU in the 400m hurdles (49.77).

Darren Bennett was arguably the best punter in the NFL in the 90's, and he could really run. he was also known as a very physical hitter, having played Aussie Rules Football before injuries ended his career there.

there are many others, but these came quickly to mind.

These kinds of happenings should be among the most eye-opening to caste-a-holic DWFs. They expose the big lie for what it is. Sadly, most of them will probably do little more than laugh mindlessly at the scene for a few seconds and then forget about it as their attention span deficit disorder brain reacts to the sheeplevision's colored lights as another beer swilling commercial comes on.
