Lomachenko V Walters
Not much time to do this; but, here is a comparative view and prediction.
Walters
Not distinguished as an amateur; been fighting pro for eight years. Undefeated, he has high knock out ratio, though other than his last 3-4 fights has fought small fighters with mediocre skills and mediocre or poor records. Is recorded as 5’,7 tall though appears same if not shorter than Lomachenko in face to face or side to side pictures. Is recorded as having a 73” reach, if true, significant for the height. Last fought Sosa almost a year ago to a draw. Sosa fought him up tight and close, smothering Walters and taking away his reach.
Fights from an orthodox stance with a stable guard. Doesn’t move head much when punching or defending. Prefers blocking. Has power if he has a target in front of him that isn’t moving. Throws good straight punches, upper cuts, and windmill hooks.
Has some vision but his talent is using his reach, height, and size over his opponents. He’s like a miniature Deontay Wilder. He’s a flatfoot; his mobility is poor. None have written about it because he has caught his opponents with his reach until he met Sosa, whom he couldn’t get away from because he’s so flat on his feet.
Has never faced an elite boxer. Yes, he faced little Philipino Nonito Donaire, who is very good, but not elite.
Walters is not known to be a dirty fighter, he has earned his victories without controversy through good boxing. He seems a fair competitor.
Lomachenko
Does everything. There is not a technique he has not mastered. The most skilled white boxer since Willie Pep? Just astonishing skill and creativity. Everyone knows he was 396-1 as an amateur, fought and won all 10 semi-pro fights, and should be undefeated as a full pro but, again, a crooked referee and crooked judges denied him. He’s promoted by two face Arum. Surprised?
Whatever I see, he sees four times that. He has eight eyes.
Special training he does in private with his father and closest friends.
Yes, of course, Team Lomachenko studies opponents before going in a fight. Loma’s father has someone else sending him messages through a headset about the other corner, broadcasters, referees comments, etc. Lomachenko’s father is a brilliant trainer; his son a brilliant student.
VERY smart, perfectly conditioned, innovative in and out of the ring, genius tactician matching his stunning skills.
Probable outcome
With Walter’s wide stance, his long arms and flat feet, Loma will likely be looking to feint Walters into stretching himself out trying to hit a darting left-right-up-down-close-far target. This will create acres of room for Loma to step in, step aside, and land on Walter's long torso and unprotected head. It is conceivable that Walters is overwhelmed. I think Walters will tough this fight out, no matter what punishment he takes, and lose a wide unanimous decision. Lomachenko UD 12.
