From Eastside Boxing:

It's official: Klitschko versus Austin

19.01.07 - By Adrian Saba: After weeks of speculation and uncertainty, finally an agreement has been reached: the younger of the Klitschkos, Wladimir, will fight Ray "The Rainman" Austin, boxer from Cleveland, Ohio. They will face on March 10, in Germany, at the SAP-Arena.

Before this fight was announced as official, there were rumours about a showdown between Wladimir and Oleg Maskaev, in Russia or Germany, a duel that would have unified the IBF/WBC belts and that, probably, would have also been for the vacant and prestigious Ring Title. Now, with Klitschko-Austin happening in the near future, unification seems distant once again. Apart from that, it will pressure Maskaev to defend against Samuel Peter, probably on April or May. He must take that immense risk or retire, but the WBC won't give him another optional defence, mainly because Samuel Peter deserves a title shot more than anyone in the current Heavyweight division..

During some time, the possibility of a fight between Klitscko and Briggs was mentioned, but it was ruined quickly when it was declared that Briggs' challenger will be Sultan Ibragimov. Curiously, Ibragimov fought against Austin in July of the last year and that bout ended in a just draw. It was a close contest that, in my opinion, was won by Ibragimov, but the draw didn't surprise me. It was also a perfect chance to see both men's styles: Austin is a pure boxer with average power, but he apparently can't leave the structure of the typical modern (mediocre) Heavyweight -big, slow and potbellied; Ibragimov is a powerful slugger and will make Briggs tremble.

Ray Austin's most notable wins were against a very green Cisse Salif (who lost a Split Decision against David Tua, in a close fight) and Owen "What the Heck" Beck. He also fought Zuri Lawrence (who defeated Jameel McCline) in a 10-rounder that was declared as a draw. "The Rainman" also tied against Larry Donald and 'Goofi' Whitaker. Wladimir, on the other hand, comes from a good performance and a spectacular knockout against Calvin Brock, and he is the only current Heavyweight with three consecutive wins against Top10 opposition (Peter, Byrd and Brock). Everything makes me think that this will be an easy fight for the "Steelhammer", but this is boxing, and the 36-year old Austin has found a golden opportunity.

Many fans are furious because of this fight, and, by all means, they think that Wladimir is guilty of it. What they want, with urgency, are unification bouts and a new flaming Champion, nevertheless, Wladimir doesn't have many options, he needs his IBF red & gold belt if he wants to unify the division. In any case, Klitschko-Austin is not the fault of Wladmir, but of the sanctioning body. In addition, Wladimir is not the only titlist that will fight a mandatory next. Briggs is also doing it and, surely, Oleg Maskaev will follow that path (now that he is between the sword and the wall) and also Nikolay Valuev (the WBA will make him face Chagaev soon, if he defeats McCline in tomorrow`s fight). After this wave of mandatories, hopefully there will be one of unification before this year ends.

Another article speculated that Vitali may come back and fight Oleg Maskaev. That would be cool. I love Oleg, but would love to see Vitali back.

Interesting. That's the same day as Briggs/ Ibragimov. Hopefully this will set up a Wlad/ Sultan or Wlad/ Briggs fight.

Many fans are furious because of this fight,

Not me. I want to see this fight!

It looks like March 10 will be the Superbowl for heavyweight boxing as Wlad vs Austin will be aired live at 5PM EST on HBO then it will be re-broadcast as a prelude to Briggs vs Ibragimov. Should be a fun day for fight fans.....

Wlad really needs to utilize the jab since I see this being a battle of the jabs.I think the difference could be if Wlad hooks off of the jab keeping Austin honest until he can find the range for his right hand hammer and when he does it will be all over.Sounds kind of simplistic yet often times things are a lot harder.Anyways,Wlad by KO.Edited by: speedster

And don't forget that Ibragimov is still fighting on Saturday. Unfortunately, he's fighting Javier Mora instead of Shannon Briggs, but I'm still looking forward to it.

Also, Roman Greenberg, an undefeated white prospect, is fighting on the undercard. Anybody thoughts on him?

Here's a 46 second vid of him:

P.S. He was born in Russia and eventually moved to Israel, so I assume he's Jewish. He's definitely white, so let's not obsess over it, okay?! Just trying to head you off at the pass, guys.

P.P.S. Okay, one more thing! Travis Kauffman is also fighting on Saturday. There. I think I'm done.

Yes JD074, Greenberg and Kauffmann both have Jewish surnames (would be first hint that they are Jewish), also check Greenberg's trunks, they have a star of David emblazoned on the left front. I will watch the de-contruction of Austin with relish on the 10th. Even though Ibragimov will not get to crush The Roid Ranger Briggs, he still gets to beat down a dirt person from the south in Mora! I am all for any of our people excelling at sports, even Jews (there seems to be at least three distinct races for Jews, caucasian being one of them.) Regards and enjoy the boxing this weekend.

Kauffman is not Jewish. Greenburg is. I hope they both win as they are both legit prospects (almost all the decent prospects at heavyweight are whites).

Wlad weighed in at 246 today. A career high by 2 pounds but he still looks massive. Austin is 247 and appears to be an inch shorter.

I think Wlad KOs Austin in the 7th.

Kaufmann is a German surname. Mostly gentiles have it.

Austin's a pretty cagey vet, so he should be able to survive into the second or third round before Vlad finds the range with either a left hook or right cross.

Thank you for the info on Kauffmann (German surname.) However, many Jews took, or were given German surnames in the past. For instance, you may be interested to know that "Miller" is one of the most common Jewish last names.

I'm a big fan of Klitschko, but I worry about him every time he gets in the ring. He always seems very tense and I worry about his ability to take a punch. His stamina seems to be getting better so maybe he can take care of Ray Austin pretty quickly. I would feel alot better if Vitili were in the ring. I have more confidence in him. We should know pretty quickly since Germany is 6 hrs. ahead of us.

All I could think of was It's Raining Stiffs and Let the Rain Fall Down. What a non-effort all of the tough talk out of his camp and he basically pooped in his pants.

At the end of the first round Austin looked like he was on the verge of a panic attack. I'm just glad that the fight didn't headline a major PPV as fights like that could destroy boxing....

Did anyone check out the crap that was posted at eastside boxing by one Miguel Velasco.Every time Wlad fights one of these "writers" thinks he has spotted yet another flaw that Wlad has or will comment on how underated the opponent is and in the end the writer will pick Wlad to lose. That article looks pretty pathetic now. Thanks Wlad, thanks Brad.I'm getting drunk.Naz Drowie!

Good prediction, Hockaday! Left hook (actually about five of them

) in the second round.

Man, that was too easy. He didn't even throw the right hand! Honestly I thought Austin would be cautious enough to survive five or six rounds with Wlad... nope!

And Mark B., Wlad looked very calm before the fight. But I worry about him, too. I usually get some nerves before big fights, but especially for Wladimir Klitschko fights. But it's so worth it. He has the best knockouts in the biz.

Add that to your video collection, kids.

Vlad's quick feet brought this about. Austin had no idea how fast Vlad would counter Austin's little retreat and lean away from the right move by pouncing on him with a left hook. Vlad can be very sudden.

Austin's corner really helped him by telling him between rounds how slow Klitchko was. Didn't they watch any tapes? They must have just figured big white guy = slow. Wrong this time.

JDO74 thanks for noticing my prediction. I'm far to modest to point it out myself. I was hoping someone else would.

Glad I'm not the only one who gets worried. I've been burned so many times I'm a little gun shy. Remember Cooney-Holmes? It took me years to get over that one. I can relax at least until he fights again.

A Sports Illustrated article on the Austin fight made a big deal out of Klitchko's size advantage in his fights against Bird and Brock, implying that he this time he was at least picking on someone his own size.

Did they ever do that to Lennox Lewis, question his fine accomplishments because he usually held a size advantage? No, he was a magnificent specimen and a superior athlete, the new breed of heavyweight, blah blah blah.
