Fights tonight (Thursday)at 7:00 p.m. on the Versus network (formerly OLN) against Haitian Lenord Pierre (18-2). Pavlik, as Joe Kowalski notes, might be the best white American fighter. I think he'll be a champ in 2007.

Pavlik TKO 4 over Pierre.

Kelly has an ackward but effective style that would be difficult for anyone to contend with. Good D, lots of power.

Pavlik could be a white version of Tommy Hearns. He is really rangy for a middle/super middlweight. The problem is that he can't really make 160 anymore and the 168 belts are all sewn up. He is going to have to take on a superstar in Taylor, Calzaghe or a hidden gem in Kessler to be a champion.....

Good news for Kelly! Jermaine Taylor is moving up to super middleweight after his December fight against Kassim Ouma. That means two titles will be vacant at middleweight. If Kelly and John Duddy get shots we will have all-white champs at middleweight.

Not only that, rumor has it that Taylor will fight Calzaghe in 2007 for a title at 168. Finally, Joe will get some major attention in the U.S. media.

Could be icing on the cake for Calzaghe's career. The only problem for him is Taylor seems to be the teachers pet for the Nevada judges. How many razor thin decisions has he gotten in big fights in that state. Also Taylor won't go to England to face Calzaghe. Also Kessler won't get either fighter as he is too tough for his lack of recognition.

Calzaghe wants to fight in America, so that shouldn't be an issue.

The rumors are that Calzaghe will fight in March, possibly against Peter Manfredo, and then come to America this summer. And that he might get stripped of his belt if he doesn't fight some other guy (Robert Stieglitz.) And now Taylor has said that he would love to fight Calzaghe. Things are getting interesting....

I thought Pavlik was moving up to 168 as well? I saw his last fight on versus and I remember him being listed as a super middie for the fight. Could be wrong, though. I'd like to see Pavlik go up against Taylor. I think his accurate, hammering punches would be too much for Jermain.

As far as Duddy goes, I really hope that he can tighten up his defense. He has everything ability, power, heart, chin...but probably the worst D I have seen since Gatti. It makes things difficult for him against smaller, active guys with solid chins. I personally believe he actually lost the fight to Yory Boy, though it was very close.

This article is not recent but from January of this year. Never the less it is interesting.

http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/centralphoenix/arti cles/0113ext-morales13Z4.html

Kelly Pavlik has not been able to crack the starting lineup on boxing's two largest networks - HBO and Showtime - and promoter Bob Arum said some of that has to do with Pavlik being White.

Pavlik, of Youngstown, Ohio, is 27-0 with 24 knockouts. He is a top 10 middleweight whose highest ranking is in the World Boxing Organization at No. 3.

Pavlik has never fought on HBO or on one of Showtime's main cards. Pavlik has fought on ShoBox, a minor-league version of Showtime Boxing designed for up-and-coming fighters. Pavlik also has fought on ESPN.

Pavlik, 23, will take on Jose Luis Zertuche (17-2-2, 13 KOs) of Mexico on Jan. 21 on the undercard of Erik Morales-Manny Pacquiao II at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The card will be available on HBO pay-per-view, but Arum was quick to point out that HBO is only carrying this telecast, not footing the money for it. Arum is, so he picks the fighters.

Arum, who promotes Pavlik, said the perception many have for White fighters is partially responsible for Pavlik being overlooked.

Arum said that during a meeting with HBO executives about a year ago, he brought up Pavlik in an effort to try to get him a fight on the network.

"They all laughed at me because there is a perception with boxing network guys, with boxing people, that if you are a White guy, you can't fight," Arum said during a conference call.

Did these dumb asses look up the ratings and the champions roll call of the middleweight division? Two of the four champions are white at middle and both guys that hold the 4 straps are white? Somebody must have been passing around the roach clip at HBO....

A solid win for Pavlik. He wasn't afraid to mix it up early and showed a good chin although the jab was MIA for awhile but it did appear later as Kelly really started putting his punches together and won going away with a big knockout in the 8th round.Pavlik was getting tagged some but he did show the ability to pick-off some of mestizo's left hooks with his own left and was able to get out of mestizo's punching range at times with his quickness.Kelly fought too low and didn't use his reach and height advantage right away but was able to get off first most of the time.As a sidenote Victor Oganov won with a 2nd round TKO on this card as well.Oganov has won all his 26 fights by knockout and get this his 55 wins as an amateur were also by the short route.Amazing.

Pavlik has a devastating overhand right. Especially when he sets it up with a good stiff jab. He had Zertuche hurt badly the first knockdown.

"Two white guys fighting for the heavyweight title, boy that Spielberg is great" "White guys can't fight. Blacks fight better, Puerto Ricans fight even better, the lower you go on the socio economic level the better you fight(how he thought black were above Puerto Ricans is beyond me). "Somewhere there is an American Indian waiting to kick someone's ass"....... It was a bit out of his stand up routine maybe it was live at the Apollo...

Excellent performance. Not perfect, perhaps some of those shots he took would've cost him if he was fighting an elite fighter. But he won every round, scored a knock down, and a brutal KO. Gotta give him credit for that. I'm not totally sold on his hand speed and athleticism, but he has height/ reach/ power/ skill, so maybe it doesn't matter. He's very slight of build; can he be overpowered by a very quick, explosive fighter? We'll see. He's 30-0 with 27 KO's. Sweet.

As for Oganov, the first I've ever heard of him was just 15 minutes ago, surfing the Web. Apparently he has incredible power. His trainer trained Tyson and says that Oganov hits as hard as him- as a super middle-weight! Woah. And he has a lot of difficulty finding sparring partners in Australia. Apparently Paul Briggs - no slouch himself- had to pull out of a fight because Oganov beat him up so badly! He's 30, so he's got to make a move in the next couple of years. I want to see this guy fight!

I agree with speedster's analysis. Pavlik didn't utilize his jab enough. When he did it set up his two knockdowns beautifully. Pavlik's right hand is something special- Zertuche had never been knocked down. His right will always make him a dangerous fighter. Early on Pavlik appeared impatient and forgot about his jab and reach advantage. He stood right in front of his opponent taking unecessary punishment. Fortunately, he settled down, kept his distance and set up his knockout with effective combinations. Pavlik also countered Zertuche nicely with a left hook. Although he demonstrated good defense at times, there is room for improvement. This minor chink in his armor could be taken advantage of by a better fighter.

Jeff Fenech was a very good boxer in his day and if he says Oganov is the next boxing superstar then I would have no reason to doubt him. Now if HBO or Showtime would get off their duffs and sign him maybe people would get a chance to see him in action.

A word on Oganov: according to this web page, 25 of Oganov's 26 KO's are actually TKO's. That's unusual! What do you guys make of that?

As far as I understand it, a KO occurs when a fighter is actually knocked unconscious, or fails to make the ten count. A TKO is any other stoppage, by referee, throwing in the towel, doctor stoppage, injury, etc. More than likely (I'm just guessing) Oganov was pounding his opponents so bad the ref stopped the fight instead of allowing the fighter to hit the canvas for a ten count.

Mora pulled out of the fight with Taylor and now Taylor wants Cory Spinks. According to Pavlik, Taylor is ducking big punchers. He only wants to fight small guys. Looking for a fight with Spinks would seem to prove Pavlik right. Pavlik and Miranda are set to fight in July, but will Taylor actually fight one of these guys?

As for Pavlik/ Miranda, I'm excited and nervous about this one (as always.) Good luck to the Ghost!

I think Pavlik can take Miranda if he fights tall and uses his reach. Pavlik should avoid at all cost banging inside with Miranda. Not that Pavlik can't bang, but why play into your opponents (Miranda) strong point. That being said I think this fight has the potential to be one of those fights that come around once a decade. Of course you know who I'll be goin for.

Nice to see America finally has another decent white fighter to follow. I've seen bits here and there of Kelly and he looks very good but as of yet hasn't fought anyone of any significance. As of now I still think he should avoid the big boys in Taylor, Kessler and Joe Calzaghe. As for my man Joe im looking forward to a demolition of Manfredo on 7th of April and then is the next step, America! We're all very confident over here that Joe can beat Taylor especially after that 12 round white wash of Jeff 'no hook' Lacy. Good luck with Kelly Pavlik and I just hope your discriminitive media gives him the attention he needs and deserves.
