K2, theworld's second highest mountain,is the toughest oneto climb, not Everest. At least nine have died as a result of an avalanche yesterday. The death toll is expected to mount. According to this article, 27 percent of those who make it to the peak die on the way down! Amazing.It takes a special person to try and conquer these daunting mountains.

BTW, it was onlya few years agothat the first member of God's Chosen Athletic People finally made it to the top of Everest. Apparently mountain climbing is yet another sport thatblackshavezero interest in, otherwise, well, everyone knows they'd dominate it.

Very few blacks even like to hunt, fish and camp much less ski down a mountain or climb up one.That 27% figure seems like a very high death rate to me, so while you are right that it takes a special person to scale these mountains it also takes kind of a crazy person as well. However, I give all those who even try to do this mad props and respect.

I'm always a sucker for shows on Mt. Everest. I'd like to see one on K2, which is tougher to climb than Everest, and also rises higher above neighboring mountains than does Everest, which is some 1,500 miles away. The Himalayans are an amazing mountain range, over twice as high as the Rocky Mountains in the lower 48.

thanks for the pictures--a beautiful, if treacherous mountain.

When Edmund Hillary was asked why he climbed Everest, he simply said "Because it is there".

That shows the white spirit at its best---undertaking a task just because it is something difficult and rare to accomplish.

The same spirit animated all the great discoverers.

Interesting, how come it was whites who first ascended these mountains? Assorted Asiatic peoples have lived in those areas for millenia.

Let's face it--there is something inquisitive and adventurous about Western Man. It is one of his most striking characteristics.

The Asians are intelligent too, and have built impressive civilizations, but it seems they lack this adventurousness, this outgoingness. they tend to turn inward on themselves. Look at China or Japan throughout most of their history. For 400 years, Japan forbid foreigners from landing on their shore, and they made no attempts to colonize outside of Japan. Look at the symbolism of the Great Wall. It's defensive, turned inward, protecting a decaying mandarin civilization.

Look at Western Man: Cortes, Pizarro, Columbus, Edmund Hillary, Ernest Shackelton, etc.

laughing, determined, confident,..loving a challenge...he knows he may die but he also knows the whole adventure is worth it.

Embrace life...Embrace the quest...Embrace Adventure

How far this is from the timidity of the Chinese Mandarin or the base "rap" ideology of "get rich or die tryin"!
