After the festival winded down around 6 p.m. a large group of festival goers leaving the area attacked at least two cars, one of which drivers was pulled from his vehicle and beaten near N. 1st and W. Burleigh, Schwartz said.


Footage captured by WTMJ-TV (Channel 4) showed a large group of people who surrounded and jumped on a car stuck in traffic and smashed out its windows. That car's driver escaped unharmed, the station reported.


Next the crowd targeted another vehicle, smashing in the hood and trunk and shattering its windshield, the station reported.


The driver got out and was attacked, being thrown to the ground and kicked in the head, Schwartz said.


Around the same time a large fight started in the area between groups of girls and then grew larger as more people got involved, she added.


Police in riot gear attempted to disperse the crowd who resisted, Schwartz said.


An officer wearing a face shield who tried to break up the fight was hit by one of the girls in the face. The shield shattered and the officer was cut by the shards, requiring stitches, Schwartz said.


Police in riot gear were called in at the end of last year's Juneteenth festival to break up a disturbance involving a group of people who tore down a tent and used its poles to beat each other.

AUSTIN, Texas -- An angry crowd beat a man to death after a vehicle he was riding in struck and injured a young girl, police said Wednesday. Police believe 2,000 to 3,000 people were in the area for a Juneteenth celebration when the attack occurred Tuesday night.


The driver had stopped to check on the little girl at the entrance to an apartment complex when a group of men attacked him, authorities said. The passenger, David Rivas Morales, 40, got out to try to help the driver, but the crowd turned on him, said police Commander Harold Piatt.


Morales was beaten to death by as many as 20 men and left lying in a parking lot, Piatt said. A preliminary autopsy listed blunt force trauma as the cause of death.


The little girl, 3 or 4 years old, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.


The driver, who got away from the crowd, is cooperating with investigators, police said.


Piatt did not know how many witnesses had been identified, but thousands of people had been in the area for the daylong festival. He said no guns or knives appeared to have used in the fatal attack.


Juneteenth marks the day Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston in 1865 to share news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863.

I have not heard or read any mention of race. A still shot of one of the cars in the video seems to have a white driver, but it is difficult to determine.

In my community they did not have Juneteenth celebrations. It conflicted with the Gay Pride Parade. There some meaning to this.

I love when the story ends by saying something along the lines of this: "thousands of people did celebrate without incident." As if by people behaving these folks should get rewarded. It's insane. Yet, if ONE white guy out of the millioins of us out there, is said to have uttered a "racist" epithet, the world goes crazy. Insane.

You have got to think that every day more and more white people are saying this is crazy and are coming to our side. What more can it possibly take???

Don't anyone hold their breath about this "incident" being labled a hate crime. If Texas was holding an independence parade and a mob of white men attacked a black driver, the FBI would be aligning all of their best satellite imagery and each attacker would be identified and thrown under the jail!
These raging animals should be brought into the public square and beaten to within an inch of their lives.

Things are apparently getting worse in the States since I have left. This type of behavior is in their genes and anyone who says different is either ignorant, or lying.
