I was amused by the build up. All the talk about this being an all time great British fight was certainly overreaching. All they talked about was how they both have great power and fragile chins. Uh, how do you have a "war" with two fragile chins?!
Both fighters have to be able to absorb a lot of punishment in order to have a "war." Duh.
Macca was too aggressive after he took some stiff punches. He should have been more conservative for the first three or four rounds. I assume that was the gameplan. Survive early and win late. I believe it was right before the second big right hand that Haye landed in the second round, that Macca took a huge step or two forward and BAM! Big right hand. Moments later he stepped straight back with his hands at his waist when Haye landed the shot that knocked him into the ropes. So Macca was too aggressive, and he had defensive lapses. Combine that with Haye's power and hand speed and it's no wonder why he got KO'd.
Having said all that, now that Haye is moving to the HW division, the Cruiserweight division is wide open! There's Cunningham, the winner of Adamek/ Bell, Mormeck, Jirov, throw in some young guys like Kraj and perhaps an improved Huck... clearly the division is there for the taking. And this doesn't have to be the end of Maccarinelli. Boxing fans are too quick to dismiss fighters after they lose. One loss is somehow the end of a fighter's career. Yes, it was a terrible loss, but this is just the beginning for Enzo Maccarinelli. He's only 27! This is his first loss in eight years! It's only the second big fight in his career (if you consider the Brathwaite fight a big fight, I do,) and he got knocked out by a guy who could've knocked out
anyone in the division. And not only that, but Haye is immediately leaving the division. So he's not as good as Haye. Oh well. After Saturday, he doesn't have to be. This fight doesn't determine how good Maccarinelli will be. How he improves, and how he fights in the future, will determine how good he will be. He could still be a great Cruiserweight champion. Or not. We'll see.
Hey, at least Kraj won! That's great. I haven't seen him fight, so I have to reserve judgment. All I know is that he's an Olympic Silver medalist who just beat the number one challenger to the WBC belt (yeah, I had to look it up!) and now Kraj is the mandatory challenger. With Haye moving up, I see no reason why Kraj won't be fighting for that belt in his next fight. So he could be a champion very soon. Who knows, maybe Macca-Haye will turn out to be the less important Cruiserweight fight that took place on March 8, 2008....

I give Haye credit, but the referee should have called the first knockdown, when Enzo went into the ropes and then stood back up, so he would have had a chance to really recover.
I agree. The ropes kept him up, and the ref should have stepped in right there and given him a 10-count. Haye missed with several punches after that, but then he landed another huge right hand that sent Macca to the canvas. I'm not complaining, Haye beat him fair and square, but the ref could have saved Macca from that last devastating shot. That was the punch that seemed to do most of the damage. Haye probably would've knocked him out anyway, but there was only a minute left in the round, and he possibly could've clinched and survived the round, and regrouped in the next round. Or not.
