Germany Scouting Report

Germany was the last and least team to qualify for the Olympics, taking the final spot in the last qualifier. In that tourney, they beat Lebanon (by 57), New Zealand (by 18), Brazil (by 13), and Puerto Rico (by 14). Their lone blemish was a loss to fellow Olympic qualifier Croatia (by 6).

Germany is an inside-outside team, letting skilled big men work the paint, surrounded by willing and able 3 point specialists. They play tough defense, usually keeping the score low.The addition of Kaman should vastly improve the German scoring, defense, and rebounding, and just might propel them onto the Olympic medal stand.

Germany is unquestionably 7'0 PF Dirk NOWITZKI's team. In the recent qualifying tournament, he led the team in scoring by a large margin (in fact, he led the entire tournament in scoring by a large margin). He shot 53% inside the arc, 44% beyond the arc, 92% on FTs, and was a close second in rebounds, assists, and blocks while leading his team in minutes played.

With the addition of 7'0 C Chris KAMAN, Germany took a huge step up on the international ladder. Arriving with the team only days before the qualifying tournament and not speaking a word of German, Kaman still was able to make his presence felt, leading the team in rebounding and blocks, and coming in second in scoring. His need to adjust to the international ball and style were apparent in his team-leading fouls and turnovers, but expect Kaman to make strides in every game he plays for Germany.

Sweet-shooting 5'11 PG Pascal ROLLER led the Germans in assists, and was third in scoring, shooting 53% from behind the 3 point line, where he took most of his shots.

Steffen HAMANN, 6'1 PG, was a close fourth behind Roller in scoring, but led the team in steals and was third in assists. Hamann is more of an inside threat, shooting an incredible 81% inside the arc, where he took most of his shots. He also hit 50% of his 3's and 89% of his FTs, indicating that he is a dead eye marksman from everywhere on the court.

Demond GREENE, 6'1 SG, (mulatto son of German and black American) was second on the team in minutes played, and fifth on the team in scoring. He is a three-point specialist, taking almost all his shots behind the line, and hitting 52% of them.

Key roll-players include6'4 SG Robert GARRETT (also mulatto), 6'8 SF Konrad WYSOCKI, who was third on the team in rebounding, and 7'1 C Patrick FEMERLING, who provides back-up minutes for Kaman and Nowitzki up front.

Jared, that's a very nice visual in your avatar of a head bouncing off the mat a couple of times. Awesome ground and pound!

Key game in Group B tonight at 11:30 PST, pitting Germany against Greece. Should be a great game. If Germany can pull off a win, it would be considered a huge upset, but it would not surprise me if they did.

Chris Kaman and Dirk had monster games against Angola, but, uh, that was Angola. (So much for black basketball superiority: the African champs always finish last in every international tournament.)

Anyway, Greece will be a real test for the German squad, and vise versa. After dropping their opening contest to Spain, Greece is no doubt very anxious not to start 0-2 with USA waiting for game 3.

Should be a tightly fought game between two teams with opposite strengths: Germany with their great C and PF, Greece with their great guards. Both teams play fantastic defense. Definitely a must see.

Germany faces a do-or-die game tomorrow against China, in what amounts to an elimination game for both teams. Tip time 5am (PST).

Germany's performance against Greece and Spain was a bit disappointing, but not unexpected. Taking care of the surprisingly strong Chinese team promises to be quite the task, and will reveal the true heart of the German squad.

China is not known for its strong physical defense (the only kind that has worked against the Germans), so I expect the spectacular German front line of Dirk and Kaman to get back to their dominant ways, powering Germany to a much needed victory after the last two thrashings.

Hometown officiating at its worst. Dirk was dominating in the fourth quarter, tearing China up, until the refs give him two ridiculous phantasm offensive fouls to prevent crucial baskets. The fix was in.

You beat me to it 89. That was ridiculous. Did you see Dirk shaking hands? I saw him sit down first. Then I didn't see him again. I only saw the second half. Was the officiating that bad the whole game? The officials had to stop Dirk when he finally got going.

Did the officials favour China? Maybe but when you shot 25 % from the field you don't deserve to win.

I hope that half of our players retire, especially the 2 halfcasts.

I also think Dirk will quit his nt career and i also doubt that we'll ever see Kaman in a german uniform again.

I seem to remember a couple of posts I wrote last week about this kind of thing happening with China. No suprise here with the 12 year olds on their gymnastic team, fans being paid to fill the stands after claiming a bunch of sell outs at all sorts of events and now this crapola. The boxing judging is a joke as well but they have always been jokes and that's not necessarily a reflection on just China. I thought the opening ceremonies they had were creepy as well,(majestic but still creepy) that many people doing everything in unison and their soldiers later on doing the goose stepping into the stadium makes me wonder what is to come after the Olympics are over with China.

KG: I don't know if he skipped the hand-shake, but the reports indicate he went straight to the locker room by himself, while the team stayed out on the court in a circle. Quite frankly, I suspect he went back and cried, tears of anger (over the refs, who took that comeback from him) and sadness.

itsme: I agree with you, they should never have been in such a close game, and really did not "deserve" to win. Their shooting was phenomenally bad (29% for game). The Chinese defense was neither great, nor physical, Germany were just missing open shot after open shot.

Jagla 0-3, Garrett 0-4, Schultze 0-5, Green 0-3, Femerling 0-1, Wysocky 0-1. Need we say more? As incredible as it may sound, only 4 Germans hit a FG. Kaman and Dirk took half the total shots, and they shot 35% between them. What a disaster.

And after that heartbreak, they have to go face the USA in their final game for what will surely be a humiliating blow out. Uggh

Certainly, I for one, expected more from this team.
