Gavin Rees wins to take the British lightweight title

Wales' Gavin Rees claimed the British lightweight title in Newport with a hard-fought victory over John Watson.

After dominating the early rounds, the 30-year-old former world champion looked to be struggling but hit back to knock the Merseysider down in the 10th.

Watson, 27, never recovered and the fight was stopped in the next round.

It was a fine showing from Newbridge boxer Rees, the world champion in 2008, who has now lost just one of his 35 professional bouts.

Watson had been previously unbeaten but went up against the Welshman for the vacant belt in front of the partisan crowd in Newport on Saturday.

Rees had been cruising until the sixth round before the electrician from Liverpool started to find his range and drew blood from Rees's nose in the seventh.

However, dreams of an upset rapidly disappeared in the 10th round when a punch from Rees left him on the canvas and the bout was soon brought to an early conclusion.

Rees has slimmed down to lightweight since leaving the Calzaghe stable and joining Gary Lockett's gym.

This year has seen him fight three regular bouts in a calendar year for the first time since 2006.

Rees won the light-welterweight Prizefighter title in December

Rees set to fight Adrien Broner on February 16th in Atlantic City. I hate Adrien "the boner" Broner and would love to see him lose. This fight will be on HBO.

Adrien Broner will have quite a height and reach advantage, and if it goes to the cards, the judges will surely give all the close rounds to the negro.

Still, I'll be hoping for Rees to pull off the upset on Saturday.

Have not seen Rees fight but a suggestion to him in beating Boner. Stay close, crowd and consistently hammer his body. It will be there for him to do so. Boner likes to use the Mayweather defense and has perfected it. That means his ribs and sides are exposed. Hammer the sides and the head will fall.

Of course Rees in order to carry it out Rees must have the endurance and stamina. When Hatton fought Mayweather it was working for the 1st half of the fight, then Ricky gassed and got taken out. I hope this does not happen to Rees. Good luck to him.

Would love to see Rees pull off the upset, as the Negro thug Broner has been very rude to Rees in the pre-fight buildup. Insulting him, calling him names, at the press conference and just being a plain thug.

Would love to see Rees pull off the upset but I don't think it will happen, and I expect he will be stopped or knocked out in the fight. He just doesn`t have the power or speed to keep up with Broner. I would be happy if he could prove me wrong though!

Funny how the Negro Broner is rated so highly yet seems to be avoiding hard matchups. He hasn`t really beaten anybody of note yet. DeMarco is a solid B level guy, but he seems to be avoiding anyone who can really give him a fight. (Ie Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuri Gamboa, Carl Frampton, Nonito Donaire).

I mean, Broner and his team have been *very careful* in who he has fought. He has dodged Donaire, and Rigondeaux outright and he is currently dodging Gamboa. Those are the real fights for him, but his team isn`t taking them.

This guy is being matched very carefully and his team is absolutely avoiding the real challenges (having escaped the 130 and 126 lb classes suddenly without even trying to fight the big dogs). They`re simply not taking the best fights.

Matthysse would destroy Broner.

Perhaps Broner will avoid all the really good opponents as he moves up the weight divisions, just like Floyd Mayweather avoided Shane Mosley and Joel Casamayor at 135, Kostya Tszyu and Miguel Cotto at 140, and Vernon Forrest, Shane Mosley again, Miguel Cotto again, Paul Williams, Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito at 147. He eventually fought the shot version of Cotto after Miguel had been through too many wars, and was finally willing to fight Mosley when Shane was closing in on age 40.

Now that Pacquiao has slowed down after being in too many tough fights, Floyd might summon up the courage to fight the man he calls "the midget".

Completely agree. Matthysse hits extremely hard, is fast, and Broner will literally stand and trade with him. Big mistake on Broner`s part. I like Matthysse by KO, actually, he has a style suited to beat Broner. Broner has a tendency to trade punches, he almost fights a bit like Andre Berto. That style is just begging to get knocked out by Matthysse!

Carl Frampton is another white fighter that would stand a good chance of beating Broner.

Yes, Broner has literally moved from 126 to 135 pounds, and has avoided every single possible `big fight` he could have had. No fight with Nonito Donaire. No fight with Guillermo Rigondeaux. No fight with Yuri Gamboa.

Instead, he`s fighting B level guys like Antonio DeMarco and Gavin Rees. I will be fully supporting Rees on Saturday, but I call a spade a spade and Rees has very little chance in this fight. Frampton or Matthysse would do much better.

Broner`s team and HBO are specifically seeking out easy fights, and that`s why they`re fighting Rees. I don`t mean to knock Rees but its the truth. Frampton and Matthysse are better white fighters that would make a much more competitive fight, but both have been overlooked by HBO. HBO wouldn`t want to broadcast Broner-Matthysse or Broner-Frampton, because, you know the white man has a good chance to KO the Negro in those fights, and that`s not what HBO wants to show its viewers. HBO is much more comfortable showing a less competitive fight in Rees - Broner.

Nevertheless, it would be great if Rees can prove me wrong! Ill be rooting for him! Broner is overrated and one of these days his team`s `cherry picking` of easy opponents will backfire.

Rees does have *a lot* of experience so I hope he can use that to out-smart and out-box Broner.

I think Rees has a chance of winning but as stated above, he's the underdog. Broner is the typical rude and obnoxious negro boxer similar to Mayweather. I sure hope Rees pulls the upset.

I checked boxingscene today and I was happy to see this article:

http://www.boxingscene.com/froch-barker-frampton-plead-with-rees-down-broner--62404

It seems that Gavin Rees` friends in the UK, such as Carl Froch, Carl Frampton and Darren Barker are supporting him in his fight this weekend. That`s nice and great to see that!

Goodluck to Gavin Rees and it`d be glorious if he pulls the upset! Look at it this way, he has nothing to lose in the fight and a lot to gain!

Best of luck to Gavin :)

Rees is an 80-1 underdog. I need to learn how to place bets, because I would put some money on this one. According to Mad Max K, the odds are so high because Broner is "special." Well he might be, but hopefully Rees can find out how tough Broner really is.

He's a huge underdog. I sure hope he can pull the upset. He certainly has a chance. I would love to see another of HBO's great black hopes lose tonight.

Anyone watching the prelimary? Euro Sjeckloca vs rugged gatekeeper Bika? Looks like Bika has improved. Sjeckloca has to step on the gas and hurt him or he will lose.

Sjeckloca had a lot of courage but he simply never had the punching power to trouble Bika.

There are lots of better white boxers than
Sjeckloca at 168: Groves, Bute, Froch, Kessler, Abraham, Stieglitz, Oosthuizen, etc.

But I know the Max Kellerman was enjoying seeing the two overmatched white boxers getting beaten up tonight.

Rees gave a good account of himself, won the 1st two rounds. But he was too small to compete with ******* broner albeit good fighter. Boner's day of reckoning will come. He is more of a A hole than mayweather ever was.

Like I have always said, Lucas Mattyese is the fire wall of boner reaching super stardome.

Rees should go down to featherweight. Too small for lightweight. Both weighed in tonight at 150 lbs. Hard to believe. I walk around at 150 lbs and I am 507. Rees looks like 504 or 503.

+100, I see things the exact same way as you.

These were two mismatches that HBO showed tonight. Typical of HBO that they would bring in two white opponents specifically TO LOSE to Negroes, as both white men were massive underdogs in their fights. At the same time, HBO ignores European champions and white fighters who are the best. HBO however, has no problem showing less talented white fighters in situations where they will lose.

Sjekola showed a lot of courage and deserves credit for that (I even thought he won 2 or 3 rounds in the fight), but he is probably not even a legit top30 super middleweight in the world. I can think of atleast ten white fighters in the same weightclass that are far better than Sjekola (Bute, Kessler, Froch, Groves, Oosthuizen, Abraham, Stieglitz, Vlasov, and Magee for starters). Bute has already beaten Bika. It seems strange that HBO would choose to televise Sjekola, when there is a lot of possible better fighters they could have shown.

Broner-Rees was another one sided mismatch, which Rees had almost no chance of winning, as I correctly pointed out yesterday when I said he would be knocked out. That is of course, exactly what happened. Once again, I can think of atleast 10 fighters in the lightweight division that would have made a more competitive fight with Broner. Why did HBO choose such a mismatch? And more importantly, why did HBO precisely choose a white man to lose the fight?

Clearly HBO has an agenda that they like broadcasting a Negro beating a lighter skinned fighter. This is why HBO airs these mismatches, and why HBO refuses to show talented white fighters, but instead shows mediocre white fighters.

You can even see this bias in white boxers, for example Sergio Martinez, after he was matched to lose VS Paul Williams, he knocked the Negro out, then afterwards, HBO always matches him up with other light skin fighters. Because HBO doesn't want to show another white KOing a black. They are taking this same approach with Gennady Golovkin (who knocked out many Negroes up until joining HBO, but after joining HBO, is only fighting whites.... Strange!)

Essentially, HBO only likes showing white fighters who are matched to lose.
White fighters who are alltime greats, world champions are ignored by HBO, and when HBO does show white fighters who are good - like Golovkin or Martinez - they specifically match them against only other white fighters.

HBO's racial bias is astounding and the network just aims to broadcast the Negro. This is why they show mismatches like tonight, and why the routinely ignore white fighters who are better than Negroes and often KO Negroes in Europe.

Talk about racial propaganda and racial revisionism... HBO has a clear racist agenda which is to further the notion of black athletic superiority... (which is glaringly wrong, as anyone with a brain and the ability to think objectively knows many of the best boxers today are European)

Al Haymon will have Broner avoid Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia, and he'll also avoid the two talented Russian fighters at 140, Khabib Allakhverdiev and Denis Shafikov.

You know, Ive been watching boxing for 15 years. One other comment about tonights mismatches:

Adrien Broner is overrated and not as good as HBO is hyping him up. Gavin Rees won the first two rounds of the fight today, and I would say that he landed *many* punches on Broner.

That's not a good sign for Broner at all. Rees is a B level fighter. But what happens when an A level fighter lands those same kind of punches on Broner?

Broner's defense was piss poor tonight. One of the reasons why guys like Mayweather, Calzaghe, Klitschko are so good, is because they're extremely hard to hit, and they don't eat punches. Adrien Broner is very aggressive to the point where he makes himself too easy to hit in return.

Broner is too easy to hit and that style will not work against someone like Lucas Matthysse, Nonito Donaire, Yuri Gamboa, etc... I'd say all of these guys have a good chance of knocking Broner out.

Broner is wayyyyyy too easy to hit, and Rees actually made him look bad in there tonight. This guy is being protected, but when he fights a real A level guy with power... I see Broner getting knocked out.

Can't go far without defense in this sport. Broner has none. Getting hit by about 90 total punches in 5 rounds (according to CompuBox, I even thought it was more than that) to the face by a B level fighter like Rees is not a good sign for when he fights someone at the next level.

If Rees had a bit more power in his shots... you would have seen a different fight! I can almost guarantee you that if someone like Gamboa or Matthysse lands those same punches on Broner... it will be a knockout.

In my opinion Broner is overrated and I think he will be exposed, just as Andre Berto was. A guy with power and speed is *a lot* of problems for Broner. He just eats too many punches.

Alltime Great fighters almost all have one thing in common: They're very hard to hit, and you usually never see them in a fight where they absorb a lot of punches. Broner took a lot of punches tonight, and thats OK, cause he was fighting Gavin Rees.

Its OK to take punches from Gavin Rees. But some guys hit a lot harder than Rees and you can't just take 90 punches from them in 5 rounds... because you will get knocked out!

If Rees had more power it would have been a different fight!

Broner is doing what mayweather does....pick and choose his opponents. It's pretty simple and i hope more people realize it. Broner will never step in the ring with anyone that can beat him. He should be calling out the big names but of course he won't. In the end it doesn't matter because he fights in an insignificant weight class, and he is a typical negro coward.
