Who do you think should be chosen as Fighter of the Year for 2007? What was the Fight of the Year in 2007?

My choice for fighter is Kelly Pavlik, without a doubt. There were many great battles, but the most exciting one for me was Pavlik vs. Miranda.

The Sultan

Yes, Sultan had a very good year too - fastest KO in the history of Madison Square Gardens in March, winning the WBO World Heavyweight Title from Shannon Briggs, and convincingly defeating the tricky old Evander "Head Butt" Holyfield.

Looks like both Briggs and Holyfield lost the last title fight of their careers to a white guy!

I give it to Pavlik because Klistchko and Sultan are already established. Pavlik came up and won the belt in strong fashion.

Pavlik should win based on his wins and the way he won. Devastating KO's on two top ten middle weight contenters and the undisputed middleweight champ.

But I suspect these boxing writers and the 'tribe' will give it to PBF which I believe would be a good second runner up.

I am just hoping that Pavlik repeats his performance and that Maskeav kos Peter.

1) Pavlik
2) Calzaghe

Both had superfights and won all their fights in impressive fashion. PBF barely got a split decision over the out of retirement DeLa Hoya - that disqualifies him IMO. Cotto beat Zab Judah (who hasn't) and won a very close decision against a washed-up Shane Mosely - that dissqualifies him IMO. Pavlik and Calzaghe dominated all their fights including their superfights - it should go to one of them. However, I predict they will give it to Cotto in an attempt to make noise for a Cotto vs. PBF superfight.

Mayweather beat De La Hoya, who is basically a hobby fighter now, and a guy he was supposed to beat, Hatton.

Pavlik destroyed a destroyer in Miranda, then came back from the brink and and KO'd an undefeated champion. In both fights Kelly was a significant underdog.

In the post fight interviews he also knocked them out with his modesty and wit, earning a quiet wow from Jim Lampley when he was done.

Kelly Pavlik fighter of the year. By knockout, of course.Edited by: Hockaday

Pavlik should be universally named FOTY based on the fighters he fought and the way he defeated them. He KO'd all of them! Mayweather should be a distant second but the negro fawning ESPN and other media will pick him. At least HBO picked the true fighter of the year.

LETS put an end to this discussion by giving the definitive answer.

To claim fighter-of-the-year (FTOY) it seems reasonable that the candidate should have fought more than once as one great showing is inadequate. Next, the quality of the opponents have to be taken into consideration. Beating two opponents lowly ranked is not enough. As importantly, the manner in which the victories were won must be taken into consideration.

To be fair and unbiased, there are two major candidates: Mayweather and Pavlik.

Mayweather, a welterweight, knocked out Hatton who is as good a light welterweight as known to man, and he was awarded a split decision, by judges opinion, against a highly ranked welterweight Oscar De La Hoya.

Pavlik had three impressive victories. He knocked out a hard punching contender Zertuche, months later he went on to knock out Miranda, the media's heir apparent at the time (because the drums in the crowd of public opinion started to beat anxiously for him), and as autumn came he made the white p.c. media wet their pants when he sent one of his ICBM's into the face of the world champion Taylor and crowned himself the undisputed middleweight champion of the world. And on top of that, as has been expressed here already, in true polite society fashion, he did not gloat and brag, he simply went back to work.

Gentlemen, we have our winner: Kelly Pavlik, fighter of the year for 2007!
