100m MEN FINAL
The shock disqualification of British favourite Leevan Yearwood for a false start didn't distract Julian Reus and he became the first German winner of the blue riband event for 26 years, winning in 10.38.
"I was really sad that Yearwood got disqualified. It was clear from the earlier rounds that the real battle for the gold medal was going to be between the two of us. Even though it made winning easier, any true athlete wants to test himself against the best opposition. I think I would have run faster if he had been in the race," said Reus.
Reus had a start that could only be described as mediocre but he used his power to quickly draw level with France's Yannick Lesourd and pulled away from him with 30 metres to go.
"No, my start wasn't so good but I was very focussed and very confident that I was going to win," added the stocky sprinter from the east German town of Hanau.
Lesourd got the silver medal in 10.53 with Italy's Giuseppe Aita, who had been completely unheralded before the start of the Championships, taking the bronze in 10.57.
czech_sc "I don't know what happened, I normally don't anticipate the gun," said the stunned and disappointed Yearwood, who remains Europe's fastest man with the 10.30 he ran last month.
