Pretty good fights tonight.
The first fight of the night saw Jake Shields ground n' pound out a win over Renato Verissimo. They tried to bill Verissimo as one of the world's greatest jiu-jitsu practioners, but he was mounted and punched out in short order by Jake Shields. He must have hit Verissimo with thirty or more punches before the ref stopped the fight. They weren't doing a lot of damage, which actually made it quite funny to watch. Verissimo was on his butt, legs in the air, arms flailing, while Shields was using the Miyagi-do drum technique on his dome. Good times.
Joey Villasenor beat Riki Funakada by decision. It was a very entertaining fight. For those of you who have never seen Villasenor, in true Mexican fashion he has his name tattooed on his chest in Old English letters, probably just like the ones on the back window of his Monte Carlo.
In the main event, Robbie Lawler beat Ninja Rua by TKO in the 3rd round. Rua won the first round with leg kicks and punches, keeping his distance. In the second, it was more of the same, with Rua continuing to throw leg kicks and Lawler landing a few hard shots occasionally. Rua was looking gassed by the end of the round, and it seemed as though Lawler was just biding his time. He was. In the third Lawler was able to close the distance and caught Rua with a couple of hard shots that sent Rua to the canvas. Lawler hit him with a devastating hammer fist, and followed up with several hard, hard shots that forced the ref to stop the fight. Rua laid on the canvas for a few minutes and had to be helped back to the dressing room.
In other action, Nick Diaz won by split decision over Mike Aina in that typically methodical, pecking fashion of his, and Gina Carano won by rear naked choke in the first with only .06 on the clock, after being dominated the entire round.
